Values and importance: The TNS is the first three-country transboundary area to be nominatedasaworldheritageSitebyUNESCOsinceJuly2012.Thiswasaconsequenceof its natural values and features which include ongoing ecological and evolutionary processesinamostlyintactandpristineforestlandscapeataverylargescale.TNSisalsoa harbor for viable populations of complete faunal and floral communities, including top predatorsandrareandendangeredspecies. TheCatalyst:AftertheCentralAfricaSummitheldinYaoundé(Cameroon)in1999,Headsof-Statesdecidedtojointheirefforttopreservetheirforestasacontributiontoworldwide initiativetoconservebiodiversityandtropicalforest.Joinedmanagementof Transboundaryprotectedareaswasamongthemainstrategiesadoptedattheendofthe summit. History:ThemainfactorwasthepoliticwillofHeads-of-StatesaftertheYaoundéSummit inCameroon. TheGovernanceandManagementStructures TheTNScooperationagreementcreatedthreegovernancestructures: • ATri-nationalcommitteeforsupervisionandarbitration(CTPE)whichincludesthe threeministersinchargeofprotectedareasfromeachTNScountry.Thecommittee isinchargeofdecision. • ATri-nationalcommitteeformonitoring(CTS)whichincludesthethreeDivisional OfficersfromeachTNScountrywiththeroleofmonitoring. • A Tri-national committee for planning and implementation (CTPE) which is constitutedbyparksmanagersandtheirpartners.CTPEhastheroleofplanningand implement joint actions such as: anti-poaching patrols, ecotourism and wildlife monitoring.
