It provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The aim of the program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. Here are just some of the benefits offered by TRiO SSS at GateWay Community College (Washington Campus): tutoring; university campus tours; resources to find public and private scholarships; assistance in completing financial aid applications. Supplemental grant aid is also offered to current TRiO SSS participants who receive Federal Pell Grants (#84.063) and fulfill the program obligations. Participants also have the opportunity to attend various cultural events such as theater productions, musical performances and trips to iconic destinations such as the Grand Canyon and Biosphere 2, at no cost. Some past theater productions attended by participants include: “Wicked” and “Sound of Music.” In fall 2016 some students went on a trip to Los Angeles to attend the ASGA Leadership Conference, tour UCLA’s campus, and visit the Museum of Tolerance. Another activity some students participated in was a volunteer event with Feed My Starving Children in Mesa. All services including transportation are free for TRiO SSS participants.
