in the footsteps of saints peter and paul a pilgrimage to greece

A PILGRIMAGE TO
GREECE & ROME
A pilgrimage is a journey to sacred places in order to
deepen our faith through prayer and experiences.
These experiences lead us closer to God who leads us
along the paths of new discovery to deepen our
relationship with Christ.
You are invited to join Fr. Richard Sunwoo and
Dr. Dale Sieverding, as we journey together as a
community of faith to visit the origins of Christianity in
Greece and Rome.
THE GIFT OF THE JUBILEE HOLY YEAR
In the book of Leviticus, a Jubilee year is mentioned to
occur every fiftieth year, in which slaves and prisoners
would be freed, debts would be forgiven and the
mercies of God would be particularly manifest. In
Christian tradition, the concept of a Jubilee year dates
back to 1300 a.d when Pope Boniface VIII convoked a
holy year. Subsequently, a holy year has been
celebrated every 25 or 50 years, with extraordinary
jubilees in addition, depending on need. It usually
involves a pilgrimage to a sacred site, normally the city
of Rome. This Holy Year is declared a “Year of Mercy”
by Pope Francis, and we enter into this pilgrimage, on a
journey to discover the rich mercy of God.

PILGRIMAGE HIGHLIGHTS
The earliest Christian writings preserved in the Scriptures are from the Apostle Paul. His writings date from the early 50’s AD and
pre-date the earliest Gospel of Mark by some 10-15 years. His first epistle that we have preserved was written to the community at
Thessaloniki, reminding them of the great gift of life promised them by the Lord, to not lose heart as the community waited in joyful
hope for the return of the Lord. Paul had visited the community of Thessaloniki, and wrote back to them after he had moved on to
Athens and Corinth.
The journey in Rome continues with visits to the major basilicas, Vatican City, the Sistine chapel and more. We’ll also participate in
special event for the Holy Year of Mercy. A special visit to the Community of St. Egidio will allow us to see how a local community in
Rome befriends the poor and works locally and globally to create a more peaceful world.
