MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What a fantastic two weeks we have had at Tarneit P9 College. Spring has seen the
weather warming up and we are getting more hours of daylight. This change in the
weather has put a lovely smile on everyone’s faces.
This week is English, Mathematics and Science Week at Tarneit P9 College. Our
students have been engaging in a range of Dr Suess inspired activities to celebrate
this event. This includes ‘Drop Everything and Read’, decorate your door
competition and a College dress up day. The students and staff all looked fantastic,
dressed as their favourite Dr Suess characters.

Last week we had our most successful Book Fair so far, selling an amazing $8,000
worth of books. It was fantastic to see so many students and families buying books
and these sales earned our school around $3,000 worth of new books for our
school library. Thank you to Jen and Lance Treloar and all of our parent volunteers
for giving up so much of their time to assist with making the Book Fair a success.
Over the last week, our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students have received their NAPLAN
assessments. This is an exciting time for our students, families and staff. We are
pleased to report we received some outstanding results, which we look forward to
sharing with you in the coming weeks. Our staff will be analysing our College wide
results as part of our Curriculum next week. This analysis will be used to audit our
curriculum and inform our programs going forward.

This week we had our first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Family Night and it was a huge success. It was wonderful to have so many students,
parents and extended family members learning and enjoying the activities together. We
received lots of positive feedback from those who attended and it was really pleasing to
see such strong support and engagement from our community. A very big thank you to
our Curriculum Working Parties for organising this event and coordinating the activities.
Our community garden is starting to look amazing. Mus and Kurt (College Facilities
Officers) have been working with the students to develop the garden beds and putting
in plants. A special thank you to our year 9 students, Darius (Year 6), Zac (Year 5) and
Aiden (Year 4) for their help.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our Year 9 students who
coordinated a fundraiser for Daffodil Day. The College raised an astounding $1,391.30
for the very worthy cause. This money will go the Cancer Council to continue their
research into treatments and implementing awareness campaigns. A fantastic effort!
To all the dads in our community, we hope you have a lovely Father’s Day and enjoy
some time with your family.

UPDATES FROM THE PRINCIPAL TEAM
Amanda Williams -Assistant Principal Years Prep - 1
Hello, my name is Amanda Williams and I am the Prep-Year 1 Assistant Principal.
Tarneit P-9 College is a warm and welcoming environment and I work closely with
Prep-Year 1 Team to provide learning opportunities where there is challenge and
success for every child.
This week has been yet another busy learning time for Prep and Year One students
and I hope you have all had the opportunity to join in our excitement as we explore
Dr Seuss themed books, dress up to celebrate Book Week and participate in the many
activities organized for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) night.
If you take a walk around the school you will also notice that there are many colourful decorations as we not only prepare for the Seussical
Musical, but enter the Dr Seuss door decorating competition. These activities offer a wonderful opportunity for you to be involved in your
child’s education and to also help instil a sense of belonging to the college. When a child feels connected with their school they are more
motivated and engaged and this all supports their learning.
Seussical Musical preparations are now well underway and it is very exciting that some of our junior students will be performing. The Prep
corridor has been alive and busy with rehearsals coordinated by Miss Murray and Miss McInnes during their lunchtimes and after school.
Thank you to the many teachers who have dedicated so much time to make this a very special event and to the parents who have supported
the production by taking their children to extra rehearsals. The children are full of enthusiasm and it should be a fabulous event for all.
Tickets will be on sale soon, so stand by.
Finally, Father’s Day is this Sunday and all children will have an opportunity to purchase a gift from the Father’s day stall this Thursday and
Friday for their dad or another special person.
Mark Zahra - Assistant Principal Years 5-9
It is an exciting time of the year in the senior years at Tarneit P-9 College. Students in years 5 and 7 will
be receiving their NAPLAN results very soon. Our year 8’s have enjoyed the swimming program, and
students across years 5-9 have had the opportunity to go on a variety of excursions. I would also like to
highlight our 7-9 Athletics Team and the work Mr. Hodgart has done with supporting the team at the
regional finals. A small group of 11 students competed for the College and they brought home 10 wins,
6 seconds and 3 thirds. More importantly they represented the College splendidly, helping run events
when they weren’t competing and showing great sportsmanship.
Over the past few weeks our Year 9 students have been pathways planning. This has involved looking at future career pathways in Learning
to Learn classes and backwards mapping their education requirements for University, VCE/VCAL and then finally choosing year 10 subjects
with the help of Tarneit Senior College’s Careers Counsellor and Assistant Principal. It is a crucial time for our year 9 cohort to stay engaged
in their learning as a good foundation leading into year 10 will set them up to reach their potential academically in VCE or VCAL.
Our grade 6 students are also starting to think about high school and teachers are busy planning for 2017 already! It is an important time
for families to ensure that our grade 6 cohort is consolidating their knowledge and are starting to imbed those independent learning
behaviours at school and also at home. The start of year 7 is a big step and students have more teachers, different classrooms throughout
the day and an increase in workload. They need to be able to take responsibility for their learning. If you need further support as a family in
this area, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.
We have been offered a fabulous opportunity in 2017. We have been successful in gaining 4 places to the School for Leadership. This
means that 4 lucky students in year 8 will get the opportunity to spend a term learning and living at Dinner Plain near Mount Hotham.
Further information about the application process to take up this opportunity will be given to the students in term 4.
As I am new to the College, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community for welcoming me into the fold. This is a
fantastic school where educational opportunities for students are second to none. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your
child’s educational needs.

Curriculum Report
Readers and book lovers have had an exciting time recently at Tarneit College. During
Week 7, the College celebrated Book Week with our annual Book Fair. Each class visited
the Fair to browse the huge range of new books on offer; students completed Wish Lists of
books they’d like to own. In addition to exposing our students to wide range of new
literature, the Book Fair doubles as a fundraiser. Our College Library receives a small
proportion of the cost of each book sold during the Book Fair. Altogether, the Book Fair
raised over $3000 for the library to spend on new book purchases. A huge thank you and
congratulations to Librarian Susan Grieve and her team of library volunteers for organising
such a successful event. And a thank you to all the parents who visited purchased books
and supported the College Library.
In Week 8, the College celebrated Maths & English Week. Our theme this year was Dr
Seuss. Students participated in a wide range of Dr Seuss themed learning tasks during
Maths and English sessions across the week. Students also had the opportunity to join in
several competitions, including a Dr Seuss colouring competition, a create a character
competition and a decorate a door competition. Watch this space - winners will be
announced in the next edition of the Beacon. Thursday was the highlight of the week.
Teachers and students came to school dressed as Dr Seuss characters – even the Grinch
came to school with a smile.
Also in Week 8, the College hosted an exciting event, S.T.E.M Night. S.T.E.M stands for
Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and focuses on the improving students’
knowledge and enthusiasm for these subjects. Students and parents worked their way
through a range of different activities to collect a stamp in their S.T.E.M passport for the
night.
Activities included science experiments, computer programming and mathematics
challenges. With many fantastic prizes on offer for each year level, enthusiasm and
participation was high. Congratulations to all the prize winners and to all those who
attended.

Parents Association
UPDATES
This week we are holding our Father’s Day Stall on Thursday 1 September and Friday 2 September. We are
sure that there will be some very happy Dads on Sunday when they open their carefully chosen gifts.
We have a great group of parent volunteers to help run the stall and we are very grateful.
Each class makes a scheduled visit to the stall so no one misses out and if required we help the students make
their purchases.
We are also very excited to let you know that we have purchased some Picnic Tables which will be out in the
school yard soon. They will be placed on the concrete slabs which are next to the Year 2 buildings and side
entrance of the college. The landscaping is coming along really well and the whole area is starting to look
wonderful.
Thank-you
DAFFODIL DAY
On Monday 26 of August the VICSEG Scholarship group held
a fundraiser for daffodil day, to support people struggling
with cancer and to raise funds for research. Together we
raised $1,460.35 on this day. The money raised will go to
the Cancer Council. The overall experience was enjoyable
and we are proud to be a part of the team that organised
this event. We are truly grateful to Tarneit College and the
wider community including students, teachers and parents
for their donations.

high jump, Jotham Kuku (Year 9) in both the 100m and high jump, Davey Kaleopa (Year 8) 100m and Caleb
Mildern-Wright in the 1500m.
With such a small team it was great to finish with 10 firsts for the day! Wins went to Jade Te Aute (Year 7)
finishing first in her 100m final, Davey in long jump (3cm off the record), Jotham in triple jump, Xaviour Taufa in
both shotput and discus, Hailee in long jump and Joel Kuku (Year 7) winning a total of four events consisting of

Sick Bay
UPDATING O F ASTHMA CARE PLANS/VENTOLIN
The College has a responsibility to have updated Asthma Care Plans and
Ventolin for any students documented as having asthma.
Please ensure that your child has an up to date Asthma Care Plan/
Ventolin. Without these items – this could impact on whether your child is able
to participate in sporting events and excursions.
If unsure of these details please check with the First Aid Officer on 9749 0506.
SPARE UNIFORM
There has been a large number of clothing items loaned out to students via
sickbay.
If your child has come home with any items – please ensure that they are
washed and returned to sick bay before the end of the term.
Without these clothes made available to students they may need to
unnecessarily go home. Please place a spare pair of underwear and pants in
your child’s bag if you feel that it may be required for emergencies.
LOST PROPERTY
We currently have a large number of items of Lost Property in our boxes near sick bay.
Note these boxes will be cleaned up in the last week of school. Any items with names
on them will be returned to the student’s class before the end of term. Non-school
items will be disposed of – including lunch boxes, drink bottles etc.
Please encourage your child to check through lost property in the next week or so for
any items they think they may have lost.
To allow for items to be returned to a student as soon as possible - always ensure that
they are all clearly labelled with your child’s name on them.

YEAR 2 NEWS
Earth Education
Recently the Grade 2’s had the fantastic opportunity to put their learning into
practice and go on a Science excursion to Earth ED.
The students explored forces and all about pushing, pulling and gravity. They
learnt about what it would be like in space with zero gravity and how some of
their most loved games wouldn’t work in space.
The Grade 2 teachers would like to congratulate the Grade 2’s on their
enthusiasm at Earth ED and their fantastic behaviour; they showed great pride in
their school.
YEAR 4 NEWS
Daffodil Day in the Grade 4 classrooms
For Daffodil Day the Grade 4 classes spent some time exploring where the money we donated would be spent. We
looked at the Cancer Council and wrote key facts about Daffodil Day and what the Cancer Council does. We
discovered
-
Everyday around 350 Australian’s are diagnosed with cancer.
A lot of people have died from cancer.
Cancer is one of the most deadly diseases.
The money we donate helps a lot of people in many ways.
We also made daffodils to create a display with facts in our classrooms

YEAR 6 NEWS
Year 6 Investigations
This term in investigations we learnt about Australia’s history. So far we have covered the topics of
convicts, migration, Industrial Revolution and other major events in Australian history. Our
assignment this term was to create a timeline and write a journal entry about the life of a convict or
immigrant of our choice. From this assignment we learnt what early life in Australia was like, how
convict and immigrants were treated and how all these events impacted Australia. All the students in
year 6 enjoyed learning new things and opening their minds to different people’s perspectives on
common events.

This week the Year One students as part
of English and Numeracy week, we have
added the Dr. Seuss theme into our
learning. In 1SH and 1MG the students
have written a procedural text on ‘How

Here are some student work examples of
their procedural text and the finished ‘cat

their steps. As a class we also
incorporated our 10’s and 20’s facts that
we have learnt this term onto our hats
