Lake School Library Media Curriculum
Kindergarten Library Skills
1. Demonstrate proper checkout procedures, and return books in a responsible manner.
2. Model appropriate library media center behavior including proper care of materials,
equipment, and facility.
3. Demonstrate awareness of safe behaviors when communicating and interacting with
others (e.g. rules for internet use).
4. Identify parts of a book and be familiar with the following terms: title, author,
illustrator, cover, spine, bar code, and call number.
5. Recognize resources to find information.
6. Demonstrate comprehension by listening to easy fiction and easy nonfiction.
7. Self-select and independently “read” easy fiction and easy nonfiction materials to
decode story through illustrations.
8. Reinforce A, B, C order.
9. Familiarize students with Nebraska’s Golden Sower Award and present each of the
primary nominees for that year.
Library Skills: First Grade (Review previous grade level sills as needed to attain proficiency)

media center.

3. Summarize a story using literary elements: setting, character, problem, attempts at
resolution and solution.
4. Apply knowledge of ABC order to locate words in reference materials.
5. Identify literary awards (Caldecott, Newberry, Golden Sower, etc...)
6. Introduce the Destiny online card catalog for conducting a search.
7. Practice safe behaviors when communicating and interacting with others (e.g. safe
information to share online).
8. Discuss ethical and legal use of information.
9. Introduce Internet search skills by using resources to answer guiding questions.
10. Reinforce parts of a book (title, author, illustrator, cover, spine, bar code, and call
number)
11. Be familiar with the following book parts: publisher, place of publication, and title page.
12. Introduce Super 3 research model and be familiar with the terms fact, bullet and source.
13. Present each of the Primary Golden Sower nominees for that year.

4. Be familiar with the following book parts: glossary, index.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the Dewey Decimal System by locating nonfiction
materials according to call numbers.
6. Apply knowledge of ABC order to locate words in reference materials.
7. Determine meaning using print and digital reference materials.
8. Guide in research, and identify the appropriate resources to find answers-index,
almanac, dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus.
9. Practice safe and ethical behaviors when communicating and interacting with others
(e.g. safe information to share online, appropriate language use, utilizing appropriate
sites and materials, respecting diverse perspectives).
10. Demonstrate ethical and legal use of information by citing sources using a prescribed
format.
11. Introduce Intermediate Golden Sower Nominees for that year.
