Clinical Nurse Leaders: Playing a Vital Role in Quality Improvement –
Grace Sotomayor, MBA, MSN, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC, CNL, Chief Nursing
Executive; and Veronica Rankin, MSN, RN-BC, CNL, NP-C, CMSRN,
Clinical Nurse Leader Program Coordinator, Carolina Medical Center
Attendees will learn about important outcomes that CNL’s have been able to drive in such
disparate populations as hospitalized medical, surgical and high risk obstetric patients by
implementing evidence-based practices and coordinating interdisciplinary teams. Their
interventions take place in micro as well as mesosystems and include elements of systems
and change theories, caring science and Lean methodology. In a health care system
constrained by declining reimbursement, intense focus on value based purchasing and
escalating consumer expectations, the ability to articulate an organization’s return on
investment in the CNL role is a competence in which each CNL must be proficient.
Presentation objectives include:

Understand how to operationalize the CNL role of Outcomes Manager.

Describe how the CNL can be promoted as a vital investment in improving healthcare cost
and quality.
