When may I register for a class? You may register anytime once the applications have been released. It is strongly advised that you register in plenty of time since the slots will be on a first come basis. There may be some classes that close out early. Can I take a class to get ahead or is Summer School only for those that failed a class? Students may take Algebra I, Personal Finance, Geometry, Health I, Health II/Dr. Ed, Outdoor Ed I and Outdoor Ed II for first time credit. All other courses are for repeat credit only. Remember each session earns a student 0.5 credit. What is the attendance policy for Summer School? Students may miss only 1 day for a session. Students are responsible for making up any work that is given during that time. Any further absences will result in the student being removed from the course with no refund of tuition. Three tardies before 9am will result in an absence and any student that arrives after 9am will be counted as a ½ absence. How much is covered in a day? Typically, a week is covered so it is very important that students arrive on time and prepared. Is transportation provided? Yes, transportation is provided to residents of Newport News. Should a student not live in Newport News, transportation must be provided by their parents / guardians. How will I know which bus to ride and my stop? Prior to dismissal, the summer school administrator will ensure that all students are on their respective bus. Information about bus stops and times will be given http://sbo.nn.k12.va.us/zonefinder/open.html . Click on the “Summer 2014” as the sessions get closer and type your address. There you will see the route number, street location and times for arrival and departure. Transportation will also send notice to the building near the closing of school. You can also check with the school guidance counselor for times and stops as well. Remember that out of district students will have to have transportation provided by a parent / guardian. Where can I find information about which courses are available and which format? Course information is located at http://sbo.nn.k12.va.us/academic/summer/ Click on the high school tab and scroll down to the bottom of the page for “more information and tuition rates.” How and where do I pay for tuition? Cash and checks made payable to your high school can be given to your school counselor. Please keep this receipt because it will be needed to verify that payment has been received. The receipts will be needed the first day of summer school. Full payment is expected prior to registration. Click on the high school tab and scroll down to the bottom of the page for “more information and tuition rates.” Those students that have to pay for out of district tuition need to pay and register at Woodside High School. If I cannot complete a session for any reason, will I be able to get a refund? No. Refunds will only be available through the second day of class. Will I be able to take my SOL test in Summer School? Yes! If you enroll in a course that is a SOL tested course, you will be able take your test during Summer School. There is even a SOL remediation course offered in the second session. Are there any cases where students may be eligible for a reduced rate for Summer School? Reduced tuition rates are based upon whether or not the student has received free or reduced lunch for the 2013‐2014 school year. Each school’s prinipal or deignee willll
determine whether or not the reduced rate will be applied. Should a student apply for a summer school session after the early registration deadline, the decision will be made by the Summer School administrator.
