Davis How To Use This Book 1. There are three workbooks for the Phonics Patterns And Stories books. The first workbook covers the patterns introduced in Book 1. The second workbook covers the patterns taught in Books 2-5. The third workbook covers the patterns taught in Books 6-8. 2. The first workbook uses a number of different types of pages, providing extra practice to get beginning readers off to a strong start. These pages include picture/word matching, writing new words, word sorts, picture/ sentence matching, fill in the blank exercises, and decoding tests. 3. The second and third workbooks include only picture/word matching and writing new words pages. You may want to assign additional activities for each set of words. Possibilities include: write sentences with some of the words, write a story using as many words as possible, copy and illustrate selected words, write words in alphabetical order, write the definition for one or more of the words, underline the nouns and circle the verbs, for multi-syllable words divide between the syllables. 4. The phonics patterns in each workbook are covered in the same sequence as the Phonics Patterns And Stories books. Students should be sure to use their best handwriting. 5. The small pictures on the word sort pages in Workbook 1 are from A Sound Story, available as a separate book, with a smaller version of the same story in the Phonics Patterns And Stories books. Each picture represents a sound. Read the story aloud to the students. Make sure they are familiar with each sound picture and the sound it represents. The pictures on the word sort pages will help the students remember the sound for each new letter pattern and any contrasting pattern on that page. 6. Some of the words in this workbook may be new to students. Be sure to explain the meaning of any unknown words. 4. Congratulate the student on taking a big step towards becoming an independent reader and writer. 4 © 2013 by Kathryn J.
