Using Core Verbs – Unit 2 / “have” by Christina Dal Santo, Annette O’Connor, and Malia Vigil, Speech Language Pathologists, Albuquerque, New Mexico Core verbs are critical to our daily communication. These core verbs are frequently used and capture the key part of our messages. Because of their natural frequency in everyday communication, it is imperative that they are targeted during intervention. There are many opportunities throughout the day to practice and use these verbs. Here are some ideas and activities for use at home or school to practice using core verbs. The verb “have” is stored in the Unity® programs under the money icon. 45-­‐sequenced: 60-­‐, 84-­‐, and 144-­‐sequenced: The Pixon® is: Show and Tell Preparation: 1. Using the PASS software with the student’s customized vocabulary, create visual support materials. Activity: 1. With a group, have the students take turns telling the others what they have (either a previously given object or a clothing item they are wearing). 2. Expand the responses, both verbally and with device modeling, by adding another word to the utterance (e.g., “have blue shirt.”). Math -­‐ Graphing Preparation: 1. Print the templates for this activity (Math Graph). 2. Using the PASS software with the student’s customized vocabulary, create visual support materials. Activity: 1. Pass out the materials, have the students graph their M & M’s, then report on their colors (e.g., “Have two blue”). 2. Expand the responses, both verbally and with device modeling, by adding another word to the utterance (e.g., “I have two blue”). Go Fish Preparation: 1. Print out two copies of the materials (Go Fish Game). 2. Laminate the copies (if possible). 3. Cut out the individual cards. 4. Using the PASS software with the student’s customized vocabulary, create visual support materials. Activity: 1. Each player gets five cards. 2. The players take turns selecting one card and request its match by describing the card (e.g., “have swing?”). 3. The other players check their cards, then the player with the matching card, gives it. 4. Expand the responses, both verbally and with device modeling, by adding another word to the utterance (e.g., “You have ball?”). Guess Who!* * This activity requires use of pronouns to complete the pronominal phrases “He/She has.” Preparation: 1. Print out a minimum of two copies of materials (Guess Who); you will need one copy for the cards and one copy for each additional player. 2. Laminate the copies (if possible). 3. Cut one of the copies into the individual cards. 4. Using the PASS software with the student’s customized vocabulary, create visual support materials. Activity: 1. One student, the “caller,” chooses a card. 2. The other students receive a game board. 3. The caller describes the picture on his or her card (e.g., “She has hat”). 4. Using their game boards, the other players guess the picture the caller has described. The first person to guess correctly wins and becomes the caller in the next round. Storytime Preparation: 1. To use as a PowerPoint activity, download the Tommy’s Party animated PowerPoint show from the Teaching Materials Exchange (Core Verbs). 2. To use as a printed book, print the Things I Have book from the Teaching Materials Exchange (Core Verbs). You may want to laminate the pages. Activity: 1. Have the student direct the activity at his or her language level (i.e., using one to three word utterances). 2. Expand the responses, both verbally and with device modeling, by adding another word to the utterance (e.g., “Have cake.”). Daily Applications 1. Look for ways throughout the day to provide opportunities for the student to use the verb “have.” 2. For a young student, read the story, Ten Cats Have Hats by Jean Marzollo while modeling “have.” 3. If you have an iPad available, consider the following apps for use with the verb “have.” a. Tapikeo HD (can be used to create templates for Guess Who! Games). b.
