Campbell’s soup cans – Andy Warhol
Campbell‘s soup cans is a work of art made by Andy Warhol in 1962 and exhibited at the MoMA in NYC. It
is composed of 32 canvases which represent cans /tins of Campbell soup. It’s a famous American brand of
soup. At first we can think they are all the same / similar / identical, but in reality they are all different:
they represent different tastes / flavors.
It looks like an ad/ advert / advertisement / commercial.
Warhol was part of the Pop art movement. (pop = popular= from the people)
With “Campbell’s soup cans” Warhol denounces the consumer society along with mass consumption and
mass production. He thinks our society is superficial: people buy and consume a lot but never think before
doing it.
Warhol criticizes the conformism of the American society: People are the same,
they eat the same, they buy the same things because of social pressure.
Mass production leads to the bad quality of products.

Campbell is the most famous American brand of soup in a can. In fact / actually, they all represent a
different type of soup, a different taste / flavor. The cans all have a red and white label. The brand name is
written in white over a red background. It looks hand-written just as if the soup was home-made.
All the cans look the same but one is different because it’s a new flavor so the tag / label sticks out to
influence customers into buying it.
It reminds an ad/ advert / advertising / commercial.
Warhol denounces the mass production and mass consumption of the consumer society.
He also denounced the conformism of the American society: they all live the same, have the same daily
life, the same houses, cars etc… they lack personality./ they don’t have personality.
