Spiritual discipline. I honestly wish that the church used a different phrase for the idea of spiritual
discipline. It almost sounds painful, and it surely reads like a duty. But I want to interject with the
truth: Relationship with God should be the most delightful part of our lives.
David asserts in Psalm 27, “One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may
dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life…” (Ps 27:4a). In all honesty, “one thing”
that I often desire is a hot cup of tea and an engaging book after a long day. And after a disagreement with a loved one, I’m sure I’m not the only one that often seeks revenge instead of seeking
God’s love. I quickly forget about the delight of God’s presence.
But if God is the only source of life, why do we not readily choose Him, as David so ardently proclaimed? I find across
the board that the very reason many of us choose to turn to the things of the world instead of the things of God in the
midst of our struggles comes from a misunderstanding of our Father’s great love for us. If we knew about His great delight for us, we would surely fight with everything we have just to sit in the holy lap of our Papa God.
Have you ever had a father figure, maybe even a grandfather or uncle, that you could snuggle up to as a child? I remember nights where my brother and I stayed at my grandparent’s house. Intentionally waking up early in the morning, I
would sneak into the living room. With no real concept of time, often I would peep 2 or 3 times throughout the night into
the living room just to see if light and the sound of the television flooded the hallway as a sure sign that my Pawpaw was
awake, sitting in his favorite chair, and reading the newspaper.
If the spy mission proved successful, I would usually return to my room to fetch my blanket and dart back into the hallway, making sure to slow down just in time to make it look like I had freshly woken up. My Pawpaw would wrap me up
and place me on his lap, and I would just lay there, my head against his chest, and feel his warmth. No words usually exchanged between us for another thirty minutes, but in those times, love reached deeper than any language could penetrate.
And yet, I have experienced a greater love. All of Jesus’ teachings on prayer centered upon the believer's relationship
with God the Father. In fact, the model prayer that Jesus gives in Matthew 6:9-13 starts with Jesus saying, "Pray, then, in
this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven...'" Just before the model prayer, in Matthew 6:6-8, Jesus mentions the Father three
times in just a few sentences. Jesus knew that prayer and a devotional life with God began with an intimate relationship
with the Father, something that every believer has access to.
Beloved, you have access to deep fellowship with God. Holy Spirit desires that you hear His voice. Have you gone to
God just to delight in Him as He delights in you? A great place to begin discovering delight in the place of prayer and
devotion to God happens when you simply ask the Father to show you His heart. When you seek the heart of God, God
will bend all heaven and earth just to show you that He lives near to you. It was for your heart that Christ died, and it was
David’s heart after God that propelled him towards his destiny.
Can you imagine a people that collectively live as king David did? All with one voice proclaiming, “One thing I have
asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the
beauty of the LORD and to meditate in His temple” (Ps. 27:4). Such desire! Such joy! Such delight! A people of God
walking in the delight of their heavenly Father powerfully establish the kingdom of heaven on earth. By walking in the
Father’s delight, Jesus bent all heaven and earth just to show the world that God had come near and that He had made a
way for humankind to dwell with God.
I pray that your “discipline” becomes delight as you gaze upon the love of God.

To all my precious Christian friends at Wesley UMC,
Thanks for all the cards you have sent me during my
illness. I feel so blessed to have so many of my
dearest friends thinking of me and praying for me as
I try to get over my various problems. They seem to
have come in “bunches” lately, but God has been
good and I hope to soon be well enough to return to
my favorite place of worship. Please continue to remember me in your prayers.
God Bless you ALL,
Carl Albright

It’s time to sign up again for “Dinners for
8”. “Dinners for 8” is a chance for you to
meet and fellowship with members of
Wesley that you might not even know.
The groups will meet once a month, for 3
months. We have dinner at each others
home, or you can plan to meet at a restaurant. Whatever works best for your
group. Anyone that would like to participate should sign up, then we will form small groups. We will have an introduction
night where everyone will come together at the church, and you will meet the people
that are in your group. This will give you an opportunity to meet everyone, exchange
phone numbers, and emails, and decide who will be in charge of each month.
Groups of six will be formed and the host of each month should invite two more people to the dinner, making it “Dinners for 8”. After the 3 months, you might decide to
continue with your group, or you can sign up again and meet more people in another
group. Fill out the form and return to church office by March 23. Contact Kim Dolan
for more information @ [email protected] or (409)892-7733.
