It’s April Fools’ Day --- an international celebration of silliness. Why? Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 became the victims of jokes and hoaxes. News media has participated in the April 1 tradition of reporting outrageous fictional claims that have fooled their audiences. I thought about it for a moment, and then decided I should not fool lest I get fooled in return! Here is the List of contents for this Happenings edition: 1. Store openings 2. FLOA & Rummage Sale Information 3. Vacation Bible School 4. Report from Fire Chief Rodriquez 5. Green Waste Site hours for April The Forest Lakes General Store is re-opening TODAY at 8 AM for the season … Hurray! Stop by and welcome back Bob and Vern and maybe you can pull an Aprils Fool’s joke on them, but keep it nice! The Rim Resort Store will open on April 8th, with new owners Ryan and Lonna Keller. They are excited to get to meet you and so please stop in and welcome them to our community! More openings and changes will be announced as they become available. As of this writing, I don’t have any other solid openings to report. The Forest Lakes Owners Association (aka FLOA) will be reconvening their monthly meetings on Saturday, April 16th at 2 PM. Meetings are open to everyone; not just members. We’ll start off the year with a Welcome Back Dessert and Coffee time at 2 and begin the meeting at about 2:15. It will be fun to see you again after the winter hiatus! Do you have Spring Cleaning Fever? FLOA would love to help you recycle your unwanted items and their resale would help us get needed cash for our many projects. We have a great shed, in which we can store things. Reminder, the next FLOA Meeting will be the 3rd Saturday of April and we can put your things in storage then or anytime before our Memorial Day Rummage sale. Last year’s sales were very successful and we sincerely want to thank everyone who contributed and helped with the Memorial Day and Labor Day sales. With your help, we hope to do even better this year. If you have any questions, call Shari at 480201-4693 Gentle Reminders: Did you forget to send in your FLOA Dues for 2016? We appreciate your support by renewing your membership or joining for the first time. Thank You! We are still taking information about residents who have served in the Military. Send your name or information about a family member who lives/lived in Forest Lakes, their branch of military, rank, and dates of service to [email protected]. Many have already been inquiring about the dates this summer for Vacation Bible School. School You can put it on your calendars and start planning for it the week of July 4 – 8. More details later but I know many of you plan early for your vacations and scheduling children and grandchildren to be in Forest Lakes for this very special week planned for them. A note from Fire Chief Dave Rodriquez: On behalf of the Forest Lakes Fire District, I would like to thank all of those who contributed to the success of the department's acquisition of the new Mini-Pumper. This apparatus is an outstanding addition to the department and will serve this community and the surrounding area for many years. Special thank you to Fire Board Clerk John Nelson who was diligent in his efforts to pursue a grant for this piece of equipment. His time, efforts and attention to detail in writing the Grant Proposal were instrumental. His description of our community and its needs grabbed the attention and the support of the selection committee in this very competitive and tedious process. Thank you Clerk Nelson. Another special thank you goes to the Fire Auxiliary for their substantial contribution. Their financial support of this Mini-Pumper will enable the department to add many of the necessary components that house and secure the life-saving equipment needed on emergency scenes. The community will soon be served with a unit that was made possible by the joint efforts of the Fire Board and Fire Auxiliary. Thank you. The Mini-Pumper made its first journey to Forest Lakes several weeks ago. John Nelson proudly and safely drove the vehicle into its future home with lights flashing and sirens blaring! Upon completion of the installation of the additional hardware, the unit will be placed in service and used as the first responding vehicle for years to come. Back by popular demand, Ice cream socials will be coming back to the fire station in 2016. I have heard from many residents and visitors who said how much they enjoyed having the event in the apparatus bays. Seeing the fire gear in the lockers, and having the feel of being in the fire station was missed. So, we look forward to seeing all of you soon and we appreciate your continued support! Sincerely, Chief Dave Rodriquez I end with this quote from Mark Twain: “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.” Judy Nelson, Editor [email protected] 602-739-4369
