The Pine Needle A Service of the Lake Pine Colony Club President’s Message Another year has gone by and I am pleased to report the Colony Club is doing well. The following is a long report on some of the matters we dealt with this year and a problem we are facing. Finances First of all, our finances are in very good shape as we close out the year. Our Treasurer Brian Malarkey and I will provide a full report in the January Pine Needle, after the year closes out. The proposed budget for next year is presented in this edition. Please review it and come vote on it at the December 9th meeting. Spillway Update – Preliminary Good News! The effort to convince the state that we don’t need to build a new spillway or dam overtopping protection entered what will hopefully be its final stages in 2011. Our engineering firm completed their study and filed their report with the state. Their report, which was prepared honestly and based on science, supported our view! If the state accepts it we will probably not have to build a new spillway or extensive dam overtopping protection, which could cost up to as much as $750,000.00. I am excited to report that the initial reviewer of this report at the state DEP has accepted our engineer’s conclusions! It still has to be approved by higher officials but this is very encouraging news! We are not there yet, but it is looking as if we may avoid this huge and unnecessary expenditure. It is possible we may still have to do something else to the dam but it will probably be well under $100,000 in cost. Compare that to a possible $750,000.00 in costs and you can see why we are so excited about this recent news. As soon as the state makes its final decision, we will immediately notify you. Richard DePasquale and myself have been working very hard on this matter. I began this effort two years ago and after Richard joined the Board, he took the lead on this. We should all thank him for his work. Greg Law 155 Taunton Blvd. Medford, NJ 08055 [email protected] CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE AT: WWW.LAKEPINE.COM Please direct updates or suggestions for the website to: [email protected] The Pine Needle President’s Message continued from page 1 Lake Pine Day & The Great Float & Skit We had another fun Lake Pine Day that had the incredible added attraction of the community float with the skit “Lake Pine Goes Hollywood.” Everyone loved this wonderful addition and we are all hoping Steve Kingan, Jackie Heins and their crew of volunteers will do this again next year. Steve told me he would like to, but they need more volunteers to be able to do this again. Please call Steve at 856-988-5027 to offer to help. Thank you Steve and Jackie. See article on page 8 for the names of the other volunteers. Special thanks to Christa Mento from our property management office and to all our residents who worked so hard to make Lake Pine day a success once again. Anti-Trespassing Program Our anti-trespassing program is beginning to work and is also helping resolve other problems related to use of our facilities. However, we need more volunteers. It is off to a very good start but we still have more to do. Our tough stand on this has been well received by most of you but a few think it is not needed. If I were free to disclose all of the problems our volunteers have encountered, I am certain all of you would support these efforts. However, legal restrictions prevent me from doing so. I ask the small number of you who don’t support this program to trust that we are doing the right thing by cracking down on trespassing and other problems at our facilities. Special thanks to Melissa Dunleavy, Tom McMullen and Steve Herman for their work on this program. Major Repair Work On Main Beach Diving Dock In October, we tackled the problem of the diving dock at main beach being undermined which resulted in it listing to one side and thus having to be leveled. In addition to that, we re-finished the dock concrete with a special concrete re-surfacing product designed to last for many years. This had to be done as a result of years of wear and tear, 3 November, / December, 2010 which ate away the exterior layer of concrete and exposed the aggregate. Children were scraping themselves on the rough surface and if something wasn’t done, the structural integrity of the dock would eventually be compromised. Board member Richard DePasquale gets the credit for heading up this work on the dock. Cleaning Out The Cove We also had to do more cleaning out of the cove at the southern end of the lake which had filled up with dirt and debris as a result of the two previous major floods we experienced over the last few years. The cove had filled up so much that there were areas where the lakebed actually reached to the surface of the water. The cove was getting stagnant and unnavigable in parts of it. I want to thank the board members who supported my push to get the cove cleaned out. It isn’t cheap to do this work but it needed to be done. By-Laws Revison We completed the almost two-year old massive project to clean up and revise our by-laws. After public meetings where your input was taken, a final proposal was sent out to all members for their vote. By the time you read this, the results of the vote will probably be in. You will hear the results at the December meeting and we will publish them in the January Pine Needle. Several of us worked on this. The committee consisted of Evelyn Moore, Brian Malarkey, Wayne Hunter, at one point former Board member Gloria Dunn and myself. The entire Board and several general members provided input. This was a huge amount of work for all of us but I want to single out Evelyn Moore and Brian Malarkey for their incredible contribution of time to this project. $3500 Donation From TD Bank A huge accomplishment was the successful first full year of our participating in the TD Bank Affinity Program. We received over $3500 from the bank simply because 50 of you who bank at TD Bank named us as your Affinity Program Designees. TD Bank does not give us any information about you – not who you are nor what you have in your The Pine Needle 4 accounts. The bank simply makes a donation to the charity or organization you designate if 50 account holders designate the same group. The donation is based on a formula and the money does not come from you – it comes from the bank. If the number of you drops below 50, we receive nothing so will all of you please consider designating the Lake Pine Colony Club as your designee to insure that at least 50 people or companies designate us for the program? Vice-President Wayne Hunter gets the full credit for this program. He initiated it and has always encouraged our members to support it. Wayne has now found another program similar to this from Viridian Energy, which can raise even more money for the Club. You will have already received a mailing about this from the Club. Also see the article about this in this edition. Despite Accomplishments We Have A Problem As you can see, it has been another busy year for the Colony Club. Your officers, board members, property management firm and volunteers have put in a lot of hours trying to maintain and improve our community and much was accomplished. However, we have a problem. Not enough of you volunteer to help and we increasingly have to hire more people to do the work volunteers used to do. Every year we have less volunteers and every year we have Colony Club Elections to be held in January Annual elections for the President, VicePresident, Secretary, Treasurer and Board seats will be held in January 2011. If you want to run for any of these seats, you must notify the current President, Greg Law by either e-mailing him at [email protected] or by calling him at 856983-1234 or writing to him at 155 Taunton Blvd., Medford, NJ 08055. Notification must be received no later than December 20st, 2010 so we can publish the names of all candidates in the January Pine November, / December, 2010 to hire more people. Sometimes, we can’t hire someone and things don’t get done. The Halloween Party was cancelled this year because no one would head it up. We had volunteers willing to help but events need someone to take charge and no one was willing or able to do that. We had a great Lake Pine Day Float & Skit but if we don’t get more volunteers to help next year it won’t be repeated. I can cite other examples but you get the point. Due to this lack of volunteers, the proposed 2011 budget calls for even more money to be spent hiring people to do the work volunteers used to do. It would be nice to reverse this trend. I often ask for volunteers and although a few do step forward, we don’t get enough to do all the work that has to be done. I have enclosed a volunteer sign-up sheet in this Pine Needle. Please look it over and volunteer to help in some way. You can mail the sheet back to the address given on it or drop it in the mailbox at the side door of the clubhouse. Respectfully submitted, Greg Law Lake Pine Colony President Needle. If there are contests, we will publish a statement from candidates for any contested seats. All members whose dues/maintenance fees are paid for 2010 and who plan on paying for 2011 are eligible to run for any of these seats. If the proposed revision to the by-laws passes, only one person per household will be able to run for an office. Please consider running for a seat. Call Greg or any other Board member if you want information on the duties of each position. Don’t hesitate to run because you think someone else is or may be running for a seat. We have open seats that need to be filled. Competition is good and we encourage it. A fun time was had by all. Some of the players who hadn’t put on a baseball glove in years found that they still had what it takes to play competitively. The The West jumped out to an early 10 – 0 lead using the “long ball” hitting a home run, a triple, and 2 doubles in the first 2 innings. The East team countered with excellent relief pitching and a 3 run homer of it’s own to close the gap. Final score West 16, East 10. Next year we hope to expand the softball game to include a game for the kids also. The Pine Needle 6 Lake Pine Goes Hollywood... Furthermore, our Board member who signed the LPCC up will donate an additional $1.00 per month Viridian pays him for everyone who signs up. That’s $3.00 per month or $36.00 per years for everyone who signs up! If 100 of you sign up the club gets $3600 per year! These payments come out of Viridian’s pockets not yours! Viridian also just announced a new cash bonus of $10.00 for each new customer that signs up before 12/31/2010 for up to 500 customers, or up to $5,000 potentially paid to the LPCC. This is in addition to the regular monthly payments they will make to us. So put your check books away when you apply. • You remain with your current electric provider for service, billing, repairs, etc; so there is no interruption of service. Period. • You can choose 20% Green energy for the greatest savings, or chose 100% Green for those who embrace even greener lifestyles. Other companies don’t offer this. You can sign up online right away for those who have computers. For those who can’t go online, we will provide you with a form to fill out, if you don’t have family or friends that can assist you. With this form we can enter your information into Viridian’s system for you. Your information is forwarded to PSE&G. Either way it takes only about 2 to 3 minutes to get it done. Go to the money saving website: www/viridian.com/lakepine All you do is get out your current PSE&G electric bill, look at the second or third page, and look for the PSE&G Electric section with an 18 digit number that starts PoD ID: PE_____________.
