These students present with multiple, complex learning needs within the severe to profound range of functioning. Students may have cognitive, sensory, communication, physical, medical/health and or behavioral challenges that significantly impact their ability to learn. All students have SIS exceptional Student Codes (Severe Disabilities). There are currently 72 students in attendance. The school community has welcomed 10 or more new students in each of the past three years. This creates a vibrant learning community experiencing growth. The school staff includes Principal, Assistant Principal, 11 Classroom Teachers, 1 Resource Teacher, 36 Education Assistants, 1 Administrative Secretary, a Facility Operator and a Cleaner. Calgary Health Region- Home Care contracts LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses) to support student health needs. The school has a therapeutic warm-water therapy program. Along with Follensbee students, a variety of other special education programs within the CBE access the pool program. Measures and Results* (How did we do?) Focused PD at Teacher’s meetings. Sought support from Specialists- Tresa Pedersen Wright and Kathy Wodelet Utilized Alberta Education/CBE documents regarding IPP writing. Targeted PD for professional staff development: technology, communication needs of students, transitions of students from class to class and school to school School Resource teacher – 2 days/week School Technology specialist- 7 hours/week. Targets* (What are we aiming for in the current school year?) Students will receive an education that is broad based and supports their learning styles and their learning potential. Students will increase communication skills to support their learning. Students will transition to other classes/ schools seamlessly. Programs Pre-school and ECS program for students aged 2 ½ to 5 ½ years old who are eligible for Program Unit Funding. These students attend school five full days per week in a full day program to maximize their learning opportunities. Schoolage program for students with cognitive, physical, sensory, health/medical, communication and behavioral needs in the severe to profound range of functioning. Therapeutic Pool program. Contract Music Therapy 4.5 hours weekly. School staff liaises with a variety of community programs and agencies to support student learning. In-services/Professional Development Days (3) Conflict Resolutions, Diversity Speaking Services featuring Cory Johnson and Transitions Christmas/Winter Concert Family Year End Celebration Graduation/ Transitioning Celebration Winter Fun Day – Students participated in an adapted sports day. Onsite Activities – PALS, Book Fair, Crazy Hat Day, Pajama Day, Performances- Fiddlers, Circles of Rhythm Drumming, Sing-a-long with Sandy D’acey Service Learning Opportunities- Terry Fox Run (raised money for cancer research), Remembrance Day Assembly, Food Bank donations at annual Christmas Concert. Field Trips:Spruce Meadows, Children’s Festival, Calgary Zoo Education Matters Grant: The school was awarded a $24,000grant in support of our program “Operation Communication” and recognzed at their annual event. All parents are welcome Student Results Student Achievement Each student at Emily Follensbee School has an IPP (Individualized Program Plan). The IPP is collaboratively created by a multidisciplinary team including the parent, guardian and/or group home staff. Student performance is measured against IPP Short Term Objectives written so they are observable and measurable. 100% of eligible Grade three, six and nine students were exempted from Provincial Achievement Tests. As a result, Provincial Achievement Test results are not available. Grade Level Achievement (GLA) scores are also not available due to the cognitive functioning level of the student population.
