It was recommended to me by TAXI member and friend, Chuck Schlacter. When I got to the section below, I read it three times! I think virtually all of us can relate to this: “Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance. Have you ever brought home a treadmill and let it gather dust in the attic? Ever quit a diet, a course of yoga, a meditation practice? Have you ever bailed out on a call to embark upon a spiritual practice, dedicate yourself to a humanitarian calling, commit your life to the service of others? Have you ever wanted to be a mother, a doctor, an advocate for the weak and helpless; to run for office, crusade for the planet, campaign for world peace, or to preserve the environment? Late at night have you experienced a vision of the person you might become, the work you could accomplish, the realized being you were meant to be? Are you the writer who doesn’t write, the painter who doesn’t paint, an entrepreneur who never starts a venture? Then you know what Resistance is.” Maybe Mr. Pressfield should have added, “Do you have a song you haven’t written, or recording gear sitting under a dust cover in the basement?” Most of us have a life that remains unlived, and “resistance” is the reason. We find a million “reasons” why we haven’t started, and I suspect that most of us would say that, “life has gotten in the way.” It’s sad that life gets in the way of the life we really want. But we can change that! For me, it was starting TAXI twenty years ago. The list of “stuff” I needed to do before opening the doors was incredibly long and daunting. But I made the list! I put the tasks on the list in the order I thought they should appear, ticking them off one by one. I completed more than a hundred items over a period of two months. I’m not going to lie—it was really, really hard to stay on task, but I did it! Twenty years later, I still make a list every day, and as painful as it has been to stick to it, I’ve done it. And it changed my life! I am living the life I want to live. I want everybody I know and care about to live the life they really want to live! I think Steven Pressfield’s book is a great place to get started. Do you have a song that remains unwritten? Do you have songs that remain un­recorded? I don’t make a penny for recommending Pressfield’s book. I’m making this recommendation because I’d like to see everybody on my list experience the incredible satisfaction of living the life you see in your mind’s eye. Fill out the submission form with the song title(s) and author(s) as usual, but in place of the listing number write “CUSTOM” in capital letters. Please include a note specifying the aspects you would like the listener to address. For example, some members like to have their craft (lyrics, rhyme, structure, etc.) closely critiqued.
