Your City 2013 City of Bellevue Leaf Pick up: We are moving into fall and into leaf pick up time. The schedule for pick up will be on your water bills. Please rake your leaves to the tree lawn, but not into the street. The City will be running two leaf crews this year so collection should be a little quicker. Tornado Cleanup: We are trying to put the finishing touches on our cleanup from the tornadoes of July 10th. I want to thank everyone that had any part in the cleanup operation. Ohio Edison and First Energy did an outstanding job of restoring power to the City. I also want to thank our Police and Fire Departments for the countless hours they put in to assure the safety of our citizens. Thanks go out to the Water, Wastewater and Street Departments for their dedication in working alongside the contractors to remove the brush and trees and unclog our streets. The cost for cleanup will exceed $500,000 for the City. The good news is that we have applied for a disaster relief grant from the state and have been tentatively approved for a 75% grant reimbursement. The grant will help to fill a large hole in our budget. Council had approved moving monies from street repair to complete the cleanup. With the grant reimbursement, we should be able to pave those streets, next spring, (that were scheduled for this fall) and thereby get back on schedule. Compost Site: I think everyone will have to admit that Barnes Nursery taking over the operation of the compost facility has worked well. The extra days and the overall operation of the facility have been first class. The countless cubic yards of brush and limbs that were taken to the facility during the cleanup operation have been processed and removed. The compost site is a very positive addition to the City. Vol. No. 24 Railroad Underpass: The railroad underpass project is being put back on schedule after some issues with insurance requirements from the Railroad. The security fence should be up this fall with the letters “City of Bellevue” noted across the front. Barnes Nursery will be planting the new cover crop of Crown Vetch this fall and, hopefully, it will take in the spring. Police and Fire: With the Retirements of Police Chief Dennis Brandal and Fire Chief Brian Putnam, we have Interim Police Chief Mark Kaufman and Interim Fire Chief Brian Sears taking over those departments. Tests for a firefighter have been given and we will be hiring a replacement for Brian Sears. Tests for a police patrolman are being scheduled and will be announced shortly. We are pleased to have such dedicated individuals take over their departments. Each brings over 20 years of experience here in Bellevue to their positions. Municipal Court: We would like to thank Judge Tom Aigler and our City Prosecutor Dave Claus for the job they have done working with our Police Department and especially with Detectives Eric Burt and Marc Linder. No one sees all the behind the scenes work that has been done by both the Court and the Police Department in working together to prosecute the cases that come before them. It isn’t really like CSI Miami or NYPD Blue; cases aren’t solved in a day. It takes a lot of hard work and cooperation with the Court to successfully prosecute a case. Texting and Website: Be reminded that we now have a new texting service. You may sign up by texting 36000 and enter the message BVUE. You will then receive text messages from the City. We are also upgrading and updating our website at cityofbellevue.com. You will find such things as our city codes, Minutes from council meetings and hours of operation for the compost site, along with city forms. There are also links to other important sites including a link to the Facebook page for the Bellevue Police Department.
