How to Help • Discuss testing challenges. ▫ Students don’t show their work. ▫ Some questions are new types of questions. ▫ Students don’t include evidence in their written answers. ▫ Students don’t read carefully. ▫ Students don’t follow directions completely. ▫ Students give short, one or two word answers. How to Help Daily • Talk to your child. Discuss everyday things. • Read and practice math facts daily. • Ask your child to explain, with questions like, “How did you know?” • Have your child help you solve everyday, realworld problems. How to Help in Testing Season • Review specific test-taking strategies. ▫ Read carefully. Make sure you understand what the directions and questions are asking you. This applies to every section of the test and is perhaps the most helpful of all strategies. ▫ Make sure to follow every part of the directions. ▫ Mark up the test! Underline key words, mark out incorrect choices, take notes in your margins. • Review information from this year. ▫ Review notes, journals, and study guides nightly. ▫ Ask your child’s teacher for one area in math where your child could improve. Practice in this area nightly. Now… • Take time to view sample test items spread out around the cafeteria. • Ask questions!
