A Raisin in the Sun – Act 1 – Analysis
NOTES:
Symbolism: Person, place, or thing that represents something beyond itself, most often
something concrete or tangible that represents an abstract idea. For example, an egg
can represent life.
Theme: The message about life or human nature that is “the focus” in the story that the
writer tells. Category examples: Good vs. Evil, wrong vs. right, justice, trust, love, loss,
race, dreams, pride, friendship, and coming of age (characters are transformed from
careless and perhaps naive to humbled yet jaded young man or woman). Remember the
theme is not simply a word but the message/lesson the author is conveying in the story.
