Newsletter 31.3.17 - St. Matthew`s Church of England Infant School

31st March 2017
Dear Parents,
This week we have continued our learning about Easter in our assemblies. We have put all of our learning
together to create a thoughtful Easter service for you all at All Saints Church. The children will be singing
Easter songs and will be doing readings and prayers throughout the service. Some of Otters class will be acting
the Easter story in a song led by Badgers Class, and this will show how the school have worked together to
share their thoughts about the Easter story.
We have had a lot of fun looking at each other’s amazing ‘Eggsellent Egg’ creations on our display table in the
hall. All of the themes have been such original ideas and really creatively put together – thank you to all the
children and families who took part. We have awarded a golden ticket for every participant to say thank you
and well done!
Rabbits class have been doing a ‘Humpty Dumpty’ experiment this week, seeing which material would most
protect a falling egg from cracking. The egg being protected in a bag of powdered paint ended up as quite a
colourful explosion!
Otters class have been enjoying finding signs of spring on the common, and have been gathering natural
materials for nest-building. They have reported many signs that spring has finally arrived – including blossom,
new leaves, dandelions and the appearance of stinging nettles.
Badgers class have been gathering natural materials outside to create their own Easter gardens, depicting an
Easter scene with a cross and tomb. They are using their learning about the Easter story to retell it creatively
with their own work of art.
A big well done to our ‘A Team’, the Star Troopers (Mrs Selencky, Sue, Laura, Mrs Fish, and Tracy) for
winning the interschool walking competition, reaching ‘John O’Groats’ before any other Surrey school team.
They are the proud holders of the (huge!) trophy that is now on display in the entrance area, and have won a
team-building day for all of the St Matthew’s staff at High Ashurst, where we will be put through our paces on
high and low activities. It will make the walking part that we have already done seem like a piece of cake!
With the new term ahead, we are requesting that lip balm is left at home, and parents try, wherever possible, not
to be late as learning starts immediately at 9am – children settle down to work straight away and lateness does
disrupt this.
Following my request for considerate parking, most parents have responded positively, however it is still
repeatedly being brought to my attention that a few parents continue to park across driveways or to park
completely on the pavement. I am receiving unhappy letters from local residents, and have to then send staff out
to check on the parking situation, which means that the office can be unmanned at a busy time. I am really
hoping that this final plea for considerate parking will be heard and we can keep our neighbourhood
harmonious. In June we will be doing our annual ‘Golden Boot’ challenge where we have a drive on being
‘green’ and healthy – using the Cricketers and striding down the path to school is a big winner for this
challenge!

Thank you to Nina and Imogen who, on behalf of the PTA, organised the Easter Egg hunt in the playground
today. All the classes had great fun searching for their eggs in the spring sunshine.
If you had the chance to look at some of your child’s work today you will have seen how hard they have been
working this term. It has been a very exciting term full of different learning opportunities and experiences, both
in and out of the classroom. Next term we have many more exciting things ahead of us – including swimming,
Year 2 music festival, second-hand toy sale, sponsored walk and 10k run, class trips, Father’s Day assembly,
summer fair and a production of ‘Oliver Twist’ for the whole school.
In the meantime, have a lovely Easter break and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday 18th
April.
