Ileum mucinous carcinoma in Trakehner
horse
Introduction
Malignant neoplasms are more common than benign tumors, and most are of epithelial
origin (1, 2). Carcinomas and other tumors of gastrointestinal tracts in horses can causes
progressive colic and loss of weight (3). We are presenting rare case report of ileum
mucinous carcinoma in Trakehner horse.
colic. Surgery of the removal of tumor was successfully performed, but the horse
was euthanized after the week post-surgery due to worsening condition. Colic was
secondary due to partial ileum lumen obstruction by the carcinoma.

Material and Methods
16 year old male Trakehner horse with history of the recurrent colic during last 3
months. During diagnostic laparotomy the intussuspection of ileum and its lumen
narrowing were found. The local ileum resection was performed and anastamosis was
made. The removed mass was fixed in 10% formalin and submitted for histopathologic
(H&E) and immunohistochemical (cytokeratin7 and 34βE12, MNF 116) examinations.

Results
Examination of the collected tissue revealed narrowing of the intestine lumen caused
by the large finger-like growth mass of ileum mucosa. Tumor appeared as gray-white,
partially firm, stenotic, annular area which affected entire thickness of intestinal wall.
The thickness of ileum wall was about 4 cm, with the lumen diameter of 2 cm only.
The finger-like structures were cowered with gelatinous, clear material (mucus). No
metastases were found during necropsy. The luminal part of carcinoma was composed
of tumorous columnar to cuboidal cells, which formed small bowel mucosa like
structures. The moderate anisocytosis, anisocaryosis, and mitoses were observed. The
neoplastic cells were with marked atypia (without goblet cells differentiation) and
formed invasion with nest and glandular-like structures in submucosa and muscular
layer.
Conclusions
The tumors of gastrointestinal tract in animals are uncommon (1). We have observed
rare case of mucinous carcinoma of ileum in 16 year old male horse, causing recurrent
