HIV in Longmont “In Boulder County… prevention through risk reduction counseling and harm reduction is still needed.” ¹ The mission of the Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) is to provide support, advocacy, and education to those in our community who are living with or affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and to serve as an outreach and information center to prevent further transmission of HIV and the resulting Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). BCAP serves Colorado’s Front Range, specifically Boulder, Broomfield, Gilpin, and Clear Creek counties. All services are free, confidential and offered within a non-judgmental environment. 2017 BCAP PROGRAM AREAS HIV Prevention Services (Boulder Office) include: Free anonymous and confidential HIV testing Hepatitis C education and testing Risk reduction and couples counseling Atlas – an MSM-directed HIV prevention program “building a future where HIV transmission is rare” Education on HIV and AIDS for schools, churches, and businesses Community Outreach at health fairs and other public events The Works Program – a syringe access and overdose prevention service offered in partnership with Boulder County Public Health WHO DO WE SERVE? In Longmont, 43 clients were male and 10 were female. No transgender clients were identified. In Longmont, 69% are Caucasian, 28% are Hispanic/Latino, and 1.9% are additional persons of color. 13% of clients own their own home in Longmont; 83% rent in the city of Longmont; and 4% report they are homeless. 43% percent of the clients living with HIV served in Longmont live below the federal poverty level (less than $11,670 per year for a family of one). More than $24,000 in emergency financial assistance for rent, utilities, medical, dental, and medical transportation was provided by BCAP to Longmont residents living with HIV. BCAP provided 33 Longmont families with over 11,400 meals from the BCAP Longmont Food Pantry. BCAP provided 689 HIV tests to individuals at increased risk of acquiring HIV. FAST FACTS ABOUT HIV Of the 1.2 million Americans living with HIV: 1 in 8 do not know they are living with HIV 3 in 5 don’t have access to medical care 2 in 5 don’t have access or are not on HIV medication 2 in 3 have not achieved viral suppression and therefore are more likely to transmit HIV to someone else or get sick Nationally, only 30% of those who are known to be living with HIV have achieved an undetectable viral load There is no vaccine to stop HIV.
