NEHEMIAH 4: OPPOSITION FROM THE OUTSIDE
"Sticks & stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me!" We usually hear children say this. But when we want to oppose something
because it’s getting in our way, we adults have a slightly more sophisticated way of doing the same thing.
The enemies of Israel started out at the "sticks & stones" level, but
they were soon into slander, intimidation & threatening with
weapons. Our enemy, the devil, is always going to oppose the work
of God. We need to expect & be able to fight opposition, if we are
doing God's work.
How have your plans for good & faithful service to the Lord been
hindered lately?
Read Nehemiah chapter 4
Questions
1. Summarise, in three sections, the events in chapter 4 . List a key
theme of each section below: (vv. 1-9) -(vv. 10-14) -(vv. 15-23) 2. Sanballat & Tobiah criticise & mock the Israelites. Why are they
unhappy about the rebuilding of the wall? What do they hope to
accomplish with their criticism?
3. Nehemiah responds to their criticism with a strongly worded
prayer in 4:4-5. What do you think of his prayer? Does it seem
harsh? Why or why not? 4. Think of a time when someone criticised you for doing good.
How did you respond? Did you respond like Nehemiah, with righteous words directed toward God? Did you respond with angry
words directed toward your attacker? Did you respond with selfjustifying words directed toward your supporters? What does our
response toward criticism reveal about our fears? 5. When Sanballat & Tobiah begin plotting an attack, what 2 actions do the builders take in response (4:9)? Why are both important? 6. The Israelites in the surrounding areas hear rumours of attack
when the wall is only halfway done. They come in from the field &
beg for help. What do we learn about the confidence of the Israelites? How would you characterise their state of mind (4:10-12)? Continued
7. Nehemiah gives 3 commands to the people in 4:14. What are
they? Why does he give these 3 specific commands? 8. What kind of a work environment does Nehemiah describe in
4:21-23? How is the Christian life similar to what Nehemiah describes? In what ways do we build the kingdom with a shovel in
one hand & a sword in the other? 9. How might you act as a type of Nehemiah to your church &
your family, leading them away from the fear of opposition & into
a reliance on God? 10. In what situation have you seen a creative solution keep the
work moving forward?
11. Does opposition make you want to quit a job, or does it challenge you to work harder to complete it? Explain.
Blessings

Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Believe it or not… It is time to start thinking about SHOEBOXES!
In each box there needs to be something to love, to wear, to
play with, for school, for personal hygiene and something
special. Don’t forget to save little extra to help pay for the
transport of the boxes.
If you can’t do a whole shoebox but would still like
to contribute items, there will be a box where you
can place items for others to use in filling the
boxes. The final day for the boxes will be Sunday
th
the 9 of October. See Bronwyn Petrie for more information.
Families Home Group
We are looking at starting a families home group. If you would
be interested in being apart of this home group please see Theo
or Matt Govan.
Working Bee
As our last working bee was cancelled due to wet
weather we have rescheduled for the 16th of July.
Free up your morning and come along to help
maintain our church.
School Holidays are upon us. Youth group,
Kids Club and Sunday School are all on
holidays also. Watch this space for next
term’s details.
Thank you so much for all the donations for Teenstreet last
week. Be in prayer for our young people as they experience
God on this camp next week.

service on Sunday the 17th of July for

are still waiting for information from departments, if you run
a ministry or a home group please write up a small blurb
about what you do and send that with a photo to
[email protected]
Special Member Meeting
After the service on Sunday July 24th we will be having a
special members meeting to discuss the church finances
specifically in relation to 10.3 in the constitution; allowing
the Diaconate to increase their spending.
On Sunday July 3rd we will be having a
hymn sing in place on the night service. It
is going to be a great evening of worship.
