Principal’s Message
Dear Graduates and Friends of St. Francis Prep,
We begin another school year, my 24th year as Principal, and it is very gratifying to report to you that the
Prep remains embedded in the solid foundation established by the Franciscans in 1858, built upon by a
dedicated administration, faculty, and staff over many years, and supported by generous alumni and
friends like you. As a result, we continue to look forward to a very bright future for the school.
With this in mind, I am pleased to tell you that, once again, more than 99% of our June 2006 graduates are now enrolled in college, and, among other student achievements, Prep seniors were semi-finalists
in the Intel Science Search for the eighth consecutive year (and the Prep was the only Catholic High
School in the nation to have multiple semi-finalists in this very prestigious competition). On the extracurricular front, our
Varsity Football Team won the CHSAA Championship last fall and provided Coach O’Connor with his 300th win in the
process.
These are facts that speak volumes about the Prep’s ongoing commitment to high-quality, well-rounded education in a
caring, disciplined environment. Consequently, our entire Prep Community remains actively involved in implementing the
action plan to achieve all our Middle States objectives by the year 2010. (For those who don’t know, The Middle States
Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools is our accrediting agency, and we have always received high marks from them
and take their recommendations seriously as we look to tomorrow and what we need to remain “ahead of the curve” on all
fronts.)
As you probably know by now, this Middle States process coincides with our plan to celebrate the school’s 150th
Anniversary during the 2008-09 school year, at which time we should be in the midst of a major capital improvement program, the extent of which will soon be determined--with our Middle States objectives and our long-term "vision" for the
school always in mind.
And with the 150th Anniversary now clearly on the radar screen, please mark Saturday, October 4, 2008 on your longrange calendar (the feast of St. Francis of Assisi that year), as we are planning for a gala celebration at the Brooklyn Marriott
to mark the occasion--and to officially kick-off a series of “Sesquicentennial” events and activities. You will be hearing a great
deal more about this in the weeks and months ahead, and I know you will want to participate.
Speaking of participation, with our fiscal year having closed on August 31st, I would be remiss if I did not thank those of
you who contributed to this past year’s Annual Giving Program. While we await the final tally (the Annual Report with the
listing of all donors as of August 31, 2006 will be published later this fall), we already know that our goal of at least $500,000
will probably be surpassed, and this is in addition to the support generated through fundraising events like the Golf Classic
and Homecoming. For this I remain very grateful because your generosity helps insure that we meet the school’s budget each
year (now more than $20 million), thereby allowing us to maintain moderate tuition levels and provide scholarship and sponsorship assistance to deserving students. So thank you again for your support!
In closing, let me ask God’s blessings upon you and your family members. Please enjoy the remaining warm weather days,
have a wonderful fall season, and pray with us for a healthy, safe, and productive 2006-07 year!
Yours in St. Francis,
Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F.

At “6100”
Let’s look back on some of the highlights of the 2005-2006 year.
On August 30, the Prep hosted its annual August
Madness Orientation for the incoming class of 2009 to
enable the freshmen to begin their high school career with
some knowledge of the Prep’s tradition, values and spirit.
During the Senior Mass on September 15th, 21 class
members were commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers
of Holy Communion.
At our St. Francis Mass on October 4th, eleven faculty
members were honored for their service to the Prep.
Honored for 15 years were Mary Ellen Bechtle and Peggy
Bergin-Sementilli, Religious Education; Joseph Claro,
English; Ann Marie Rich and William Terrone, Science;
and Denise Heckelman, Physical Education. Celebrating
25 years: Mark Krolikowski, Religious Education; Dr. Patrick
Mannion, Science; Sister Phyllis Murphy, R.S.M., Social
Studies; Brother Benjamin O’Reilly, O.S.F., Foreign
Languages; and Donald Sileo, Guidance. The Prep values
and acknowledges these faculty members for their dedication and many loyal years of service. We are grateful that
they will continue to be partners in our Franciscan Mission.
The Seventh Annual Homecoming Weekend was held
from October 13th through the 16th. We began the Three
on Three Tournament with 14 teams in honor of Jimmy
Prendergast ’74 and Chris McMahon ’76. On Friday, Mother
Nature had the upper hand! However, with the help of those
who braved the storm, we were able to dine at the beautiful
Caffé on The Green in Whitestone, in support of the Tim
Stackpole ’77, Brian Murphy ’83 and Mike Brennan ’91
Scholarship Funds. Thanks to Drew Morgan ’89, Pat McArdle
’89, Tom Cook ’89, Sean Prendergast ’80, Jim May ’76,
Peter Callahan ’59, Dave Daly, Leo Nicholas, and the many
volunteers who made the
weekend a success.
On Sunday, November
6th, the Alumni Association
held its Annual Memorial
Mass for alumni, faculty,
families, friends and benefactors who died during the
past year. New bricks for
the “Pathway to St. Francis”
were blessed. The day of
remembrance ended with
brunch in the cafeteria.
On November 15th, 92 new members were inducted
into the Franciscan Chapter of the National Honor Society.
The Class of 2000 held its 5 year reunion on November
19th. All in attendance had a good time with old friends.
On Sunday November 20th, at the Football
Championship Game against St. Peter’s of Staten Island,
Coach Vinnie O’Connor recorded his 300th victory as
Varsity Football Coach. As a follow up and through the
work of City Councilman Eric Gioia ’91, Coach O’Connor
was honored at City Hall with a special Proclamation. In
attendance was this year’s Championship Team. Marco
Battaglio ’91, a member of the Super Bowl Champs
Pittsburgh Steelers, added to the joyous occasion by his
presence.
On Saturday, December 10th, the tradition continued of
bringing Holiday Cheer to the disabled. The party was
initiated and contiued for more than 25 years by Sister
Joseph Agnes Hohmann, S.C.H. The students, alumni,
Father’s Guild and friends of “the Prep” were on hand to
help along with the Prep faculty and staff. Special thanks
goes to Noreeen Kunzi for organizing the event.
Kudos to Rev. Nick Zientarski ’90 for putting Christ in
Christmas during the traditional blessing of the official
Christmas Tree Lighting in Manhasset.
The Class of ’96 held its 10th year reunion on January
14th. They connected with their classmates and shared an
evening of food, friends and fun.
The 13th Annual Florida Reunion was held on March
4th in Valrico, Florida. The day started with a Yankees vs
Cincinnati game at Legends Field in Tampa. A good time
was had by all thanks to our wonderful hosts Paige and
Marc Hamlin ’84.
International week
was held on March 13th
through March 18th.
This event celebrated
and showed appreciation for all the cultures
of the world.
The 15 and 20 year
reunions for the Classes
of ’91 and ’86 took place
on March 11th. The

At “6100”
On April 8th, graduates from ’41, ’46, ’51, ’56, ’61, ’66,
’71, ’76, and ’81 gathered at 6100 for the Spring Reunion.
The highlights of the evening were the 30 members of the
Class of ’56 who came from all over the country to celebrate
their 50th anniversary as Prep Grads. After Mass, William
Dobranski ’79, John Brown ’76, and Gerald Scales ’76 were
inducted into the Prep’s Alumni Hall of Fame. Honary
membership was bestowed upon Midge Stack-Lennon, who
has served as teacher and coach for 31 years; John Finocchio,
former member and past president of the Father’s Guild;
and Doctor Robert Corbino, chairperson of our very fine
Music Department. The following people were honored for
their years of dedicated service to our Alumni Board: Chris
Mendolia ’87, Wally Bishop ’80, Harold Kelly ’56, John
McAree ’50 and Bro. Campion Lally, OSF ’55.
Monday, June 19th, saw over 250 people join together in
support of the 13th Annual Golf Classic, honoring Jane
Modry. Jane is a role model of integrity who has displayed
through the years genuine concern for her students and
players. St. Francis Prep benefited by her presence for more
then 30 years. Thanks you Jane!
Congrats to Brian Collins ’82, appointed Athletic
Director at C.W. Post College in Brookville. Congrats also to
Peter Deluca ’88 who was inducted into the Fordham
University Hall of Fame for baseball. (Also, Dawn
Lambertson ’89 produced the March 1st ABC show Lost).
150 scholarships were awarded to the new incoming
September Class – Thanks to you!
Special congratulations are due to our semi-finalist
winners Michelle Iocolano ’06 and Sylviane Boddy ’06 in the
Intel National Science Competition. I know you join me as
proud Alumni of the Prep Family in congratulating students,
teachers, Franciscan Brothers, administrators, coaches, moderators and staff members for their efforts and achievements.
Check our school website, school newspapers to see
updated school info.
At the Alumni Reunions of March 11, Arthur Rojas ’91
informed us that in slightly over two months he will be
ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of New York. He is the
third priestly vocation from his class. Keep him in your
prayers. Remember to pray for vocations to the priesthood,
diaconate and Religious Life.
The 2006 Girls Tennis Team went undefeated again,
winning the State Championship for eight years in a row.
The team also won the Mayor’s Cup for the seventh year in a
row. Kudos to Coach John Brennan.
The Varsity Handball Team went undefeated for the
fourth year in a row and captured its fourth consecutive City
Championship. Congratulations again to Coach Tony
Grimm.
A reminder about 2006 Homecoming Weekend. The
weekend will kick-off on Thursday evening October 12th,
with 3-on-3 Hoops Tournament, followed on Friday,
October 13th with the Golf Outing. Then, on Saturday,
October 14th, a day at the Races will be held at Belmont
Park. In addition; the 5K Fun Run on Sunday, October 15th
will be held in memory of Vin Giammona, ’79.
The final event of the weekend takes us over to St. John’s
University on Sunday afternoon to root for the varsity football team against St. Peters’s High School of Staten Island.
We need and appreciate your help! Let’s have a great turnout
for our Homecoming Weekend ’06.
The Class of 2006 was welcomed into the St. Francis
Prep Alumni Family.
I would like to wish a fond farewell to Mr. Michael
Dilworth, Foreign Language; S. Martha Arnold O.P., Social
Studies; Ms. Sylvia Hayduk, Mathematics; Mrs. Jean Janos,
Social Studies; and Mr. Paul Speckenbach, Business.
Thanks for your many years of dedicated service. Now
it’s time to smell the roses.
Please remember in your prayers the repose of the souls
of all the deceased members of our Prep Family, including
Bob Stenger, a teacher for 48 years; Sister Ellen Boyle, D.W.,
former Registrar; Mr. Richard Hoffman, former J.V. Baseball
Coach; and Mike Fouchet ’80, former Basketball Player and
Coach.
As we look back on the accomplishments of the past
year, we realize that these would not have been possible
without the continued support of all our alumni, benefactors and friends. Together we can respond to the changing
world and provide our young men and women a quality
Franciscan education, a mission we have fulfilled with faith
and zeal since 1858. Let us count on your support as we
head towards our sesquicentennial celebration in 2008.
As always, I am grateful to all the members of the
Alumni Board for all they do for St. Francis Prep and the
Prep graduates.
May the blessing of St. Francis be with you and your
family.
In gratitude
Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F
Alumni Director

Memorial 5K Fun Run
“Looking for volunteers and sponsors to
assist with the Vin Giammona ’79 5K Run”
SFP’s Homecoming Weekend 5K Run is dedicated to Vinny Giammona ’79, a NYFD Lieutenant who died heroically
in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the WTC. Vinny is fondly remembered by all for his incredible spirit and ability to make
everyone smile. In his years at Prep, he was co-captain of the Track/Cross Country Teams and naming this run in his
honor, is a small gesture from the SFP alumni to celebrate Vinny’s life.
Linda Giammona, Vinny’s sister, is coordinating this year’s event (Sunday, October 15, 2006) and we are looking
forward to a very successful outing. We would like to hear from friends, classmates, SFP track teammates, FDNY members or anyone who would like to help out - in any way - to make Vinny’s run an event something we can all feel proud
of. Proceeds from the run are being dedicated to SFP students in need.
Alumni and friends who are interested in honoring the memory of Vinny G. by volunteering or sponsoring this
event, please contact Tracey Kavanagh ’78 at [email protected]; Brian McKeon ’81 at [email protected]; Karen

Principal’s Dinner - March 2006
On Saturday, March 25, 2006, the Prep’s library once again became the
fabulous “6100 Restaurant” for the Annual Principal’s Dinner.
Organized to recognize the generosity of those who have contributed
at The St. Francis Society level and above ($1000 or more) during the
previous year, as well as the members of The Board of Trustees, the dinner also provides
the Principal, Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F., with an opportunity to report on the
“State of the Prep” which, thankfully, is very healthy, due in large measure to the ongoing
support of its loyal alumni, parents and friends.
In addition to Brother Leonard’s report,
a wonderful presentation was made to the 90
guests by students Carlo Coumoutsos and Nicole
Streakin who spoke about the impact that generous donors had on their lives when it came to
financial support for their Prep education.
The next Principal’s Dinner will be held
at the Prep on Saturday, March 31, 2007.

Our Franciscan Mission
For almost 150 years, the Franciscan
Brothers have shared their Franciscan spirit with
the students, families, and their colleagues at St.
Francis Prep. Brother James McVeigh, O.S.F.,
Franciscan Mission Coordinator has
been working closely with the administration,
and in collaboration with Campus Ministry at
insuring that our unique Franciscan spirit continues to mold our Prep family. All of the
Brothers, like their founder St. Francis, attempt to
“mirror Christ” in all they do.
This year, San Damiano crucifixes are being
placed in our classrooms. (Note: Annual Gifts of $250 or
more can be earmarked for the placement of a San
Damiano cricifix.) Praying before the San Damiano cross,
St. Francis received his mission:“Go and Rebuild, My
Church.” A statue of St. Francis along with the San Damiano
crucifix will be part of the environment on the stage for our
assemblies, liturgical services, alumni and parent gatherings.
Each year the Franciscan Brothers send several faculty
members from each of their schools on an Assisi Pilgrimage
so they can capture the spirit of St. Francis and share that
with their students and colleagues. Br. James
gives presentations to the new teachers, students
and parents inviting them to absorb our
Franciscan spirit. A new retreat program has
been introduced for ninth graders so that right
from the beginning they can focus on our
Franciscan heritage and share the values of
St. Francis.
In collaboration with Christian Sullivan,
Director of Campus Ministry, George Anne
Kotowicz, Liturgical Coordinator, William
Vogelson, Service Coordinator and our
Chaplains, Fathers Sweeney and Schwarz, , Br. James is
incorporating the Franciscan message into all aspects of our
school life. Realizing the importance of student involvement,
Br. James is assisted by the Franciscan Youth Movement
(FYM). He will also be working closely with our Assisi
Pilgrims as they prepare for their pilgrimage and return
filled with the spirit of St. Francis, re-energized to share it
with our school community. Br. James invites all of our
alumni to be attentive to spreading the spirit and values of St.
Francis. Feel free to contact him at [email protected].
FYM’S Ink Cartridge Project
The Franciscan Youth Movement (FYM) is committed
to keeping the ideals of St. Francis alive in today’s society.
By taking the peace prayer of St. Francis and applying it to
real life situations, FYM involves everyone in the St. Francis
Prep community in projects that keep the spirit of St.
Francis visible and viable in today’s society. Under the
direction of Br. James McVeigh, OSF, FYM is involved in
many service projects throughout the year from visiting
nursing homes, writing to our troops overseas, helping out
with special events at nursing homes, and visiting at the
Children’s Hospital.
The Ink Cartridge Project serves two purposes:
1.) It reminds us of our environmental obligations.
St. Francis called everyone to love and respect all aspects
of creation from humankind to every aspect of our environment. Recycling the ink cartridges is one simple way of
preserving our environment. 2.) The cash we save from the
recycling is used to support specific projects that improve
the quality of life for needy children and teens. We expect
to be reimbursed almost $2500 by June.
Several charities that we plan on assisting this year are :
St. Bonaventure Indian Mission - Brother Simon Jaorski,
OSF works at this mission in New Mexico with the people
of the Eastern Navajo Reservation. The Mission has a school,
an outreach program that delivers food, water, clothing and
building materials to those in need on the reservation.
Camp Hope - For years, Brother Damian Novello, OSF has
directed or worked at this summer camp for teenagers who
were born HIV positive, many of whom are now
living with AIDS because the disease was passed on to them
at birth. One of the activities at the Camp is Yoga taught by
Brother Benjamin, OSF.
Father Bill’s Kids - Our chaplain , Father Bill is also a pastor
who helps many needy children in his own parish.
Camp Alvernia - Our students are familiar with Alvernia
because that is where our retreat programs are held during
the year. During the summer, it is a camp directed by
Brother Robert La Fave, OSF. We hope to provide some
scholarship money to assist poor children who would like
to attend Camp Alvernia.
Party for the kids at a Children’s Hospital - We are in
the process of planning a party at the end of the year for
children at a local hospital to brighten their day.

May 12th Testimonial Dinner
for Vince O’Connor and Frank Nastro
Friday, May 12th was a night to
remember as more than 350 SFP football
alumni, family members and friends
came together at The Long Island
Marriott in Uniondale to celebrate the
service of two legendary leaders: Coach
Vince O’Connor (who recorded his 300th
varsity victory in the championship
game against St. Peter’s last fall), and his
top assistant for some 35 years, Coach
Frank Nastro.
The Marriott’s main ballroom was
electric as former players, long-time
colleagues, lifelong friends, and family
members, gave testimonials, recounted
personal stories, and expressed thanks to
the two coaches, both of whom delivered
some wonderful closing remarks of their
own.
The event benefited The Vincent and
Mary O’Connor Scholarship Fund at the
Prep, as well as several memorial scholarship funds established in the names of
former Prep players: John Marchassalla,
Brian Murphy, Michael Brennan, Tim
Stackpole, and Hank McMahon.
For information on making a gift in
support of these special funds OR to
order a professionally produced
double-DVD recording of the May 12th
event (with the proceeds going to the
scholarship funds) contact the Prep’s
Development Office at 718.423.8810 ext.

June 19th Golf Classic honors Jane Modry
More than 150 golfers and 200
dinner guests joined together at the
Cherry Valley Country Club in
Garden City on June 19th to honor
Jane Modry, recently retired after 38
years of dedicated service, first at
Bishop Reilly High School, and then
at St. Francis Prep.
Jane Modry has often been
described as “Pioneer” in the world of
women’s athletics, serving not only as
coach in four different sports at
Bishop Reilly and then St. Francis
Prep but also as a very capable
administrator, as exemplified by her
efforts to establish the Diocese of
Brooklyn Athletic Association in
1971-72, her tenure as Women’s
Athletic Director at the Prep from 1984-1999, and her
recognition in 1993 as “Administrator of the Year” by the
NYS CHSAA Athletic
Administrators Association. And all
this while keeping up with her
daily duties as a Physical Education
teacher at Reilly and the Prep.
Following her fifteen-year
tenure as Athletic Director, Jane
assumed the role of Director of
Student Activities at the Prep in
1999 and served in that capacity
until her retirement in 2005.
During that time
she was responsible for establishing a number of
new, innovative
activities and programs. She also
served as the
Student
Council
Director from
2000-2005,
and guided
that group
through the
process of reorganizing
into its current Student
Government form.
Jane continues to serve as
the Diocese of Brooklyn’s
Representative to the NYS
Catholic High School Athletic
Association and as the CHSAA
Representative to the NYS
Federation of Secondary Schools
Athletic Association (positions
she has held since 1982), while
also serving as Secretary of the
NYS Federation for the last ten
years.
In 1991 Jane was inducted
into the Diocese of Brooklyn’s
Hall of Fame. In 2000 she was
named an Honorary Alumnus of
St. Francis Prep, and in 2003 she received the Franciscan
Spirit Award.
And perhaps it is the Franciscan Spirit
Award that best characterizes her contributions
over the years, since, in the words of many of her
former students and colleagues, “Jane was always
there; her door
was always
open.” In her
own words: “I
hope that I have
given them (the
students) a
desire to be
active adults.
Also, that they
would be fair in
all that they do.”
She loved
“meeting and
getting to
know such a
wide variety
of students,
and working
with such a
dedicated
and knowledgeable faculty and
staff.”
Jane through the years at St. Francis Prep.

June 19, 2006 at The Cherry Valley Club
Jane has now retired to the Pocono Mountains where
she resides in Lake Ariel, PA. She is an avid golfer and continues to play regularly. She has one brother, William, and
he and his wife live in Ohio.
In summary, perhaps the words of an esteemed former colleague, Sister Eileen Harrigan, SC, really say it best:
“Jane Modry is a legend in the Physical Education
Department having served at Bishop Reilly even before St.
Francis Prep took over the building. She, Helen Lombardo,
Midge Stack and Noreen Kunzi were 0the ’cornerstones’
that developed the department into the vital organization
that it is today. Jane went on to develop new programs,
raised the quality of Girls’ sports, influenced neighboring
schools to form a federation, and provided a leadership
role in the Diocese. Jane is a role model of integrity who
displayed genuine concern for her players, and St. Francis
Prep has benefited by her presence for more than 30 years.
Thank you Jane!”

The Alumni Website: A Very Practical Application
By Joseph Pantaleo ’03
As a young man trying to find his way in life, I have been
able to accomplish many things with the aid of my parents,
teachers, peers, and other members of my community. I cannot help but remember while I was at the Prep, Mr. Tony
Grimm, the moderator of the newspaper in which I was
Editor-in-Chief, saying to me, “To whom great things are
given, great things are expected.” I have never let go of this
saying. I also have never let go of the bond that I have with
ST. FRANCIS PREP. This was more than a high school for
most teenagers who passed through the doors of the school.
It became a home and family and a place to turn to in times
of crisis or in times of joy. As an alumnus, I now find myself
coming back to the Prep to help those students who need
guidance. As for myself, I have also turned back to Prep for
guidance and reassurance in my own life, and this is where my
story begins.
Ever since I was in the second grade, my ambition has
been to become a dentist. The infamous question “Why do
you want to become a dentist?” is usually the first thing I hear
whenever I tell someone about my chosen career path.
Having been a Pre-Dental major for the past three years, I
have also heard numerous other comments such as, “You really want to look at peoples’ mouths all day?!?” and, “I hate dentists!”
Well, even though a majority of the people throughout
history hated going to the dentist (but were usually far better
off for the trouble), this goal of mine is becoming a reality and
now it is my turn to ask someone for assistance and guidance.
After speaking to my advisors at St. Francis College, I was
told to go back to my high school and see if an alumnus
might be willing to show me “the ropes.” Maybe they would
have advice on the dental school admission process or could
show me what type of practice I should pursue, or even allow
me to observe their own dental practice. As a member of the
St. Francis Prep Alumni Board, I have been a part of the
recent initiative to develop the new Alumni Website. This
website was thought to be the best way to enhance the lines of
communication with the vast number of alumni that St.
Francis Prep has placed throughout the country (and the
world), while also making it much easier for graduates to help
other graduates. With this in mind, I decided to put the website to the test. I took the tools the Prep provided for me and I
searched on the website for all alumni who have registered on
the site and have a career in Dentistry.
I e-mailed a couple of the people whose names I saw, but
one name was of particular interest because it was close-by in
the city and it seemed like it might be a good fit. The name
that I came across was Dr. Alexandra Simpson, DDS (SFP
Class of 1996). She graduated from NYU (where I am looking to attend) and I could not help but think that it would be
a good idea to e-mail her and see what would happen. Well,
little did I know that I would soon be walking into an office
setting that was more than accommodating and where I could
really “learn the ropes.”
Dr. Simpson recently graduated from NYU College of
Dentistry and she has allowed me to have “hands-on” experience and really see what Dentistry is all about. The first time I
walked into her office, I could see that Dr. Simpson’s attitude
and actions truly embodied the ideals we were taught at St.
Francis Prep. I have been in the office for a couple of months
now as her assistant, and I have learned a great deal about
Dentistry, including how to run a private practice (from the
discussions I have had with her, her father and her stepmother). I could not help but feel that I was in the presence of a
loyal St. Francis Prep graduate when I heard these words from
Dr. Simpson: “My father has given me a lot and I was lucky
enough to work in a Dental office and gain experience before I
went into Dental school. In fact, I have been given much more
than the average person, so the least I can do is give something
back to someone who is truly interested in Dentistry.”
Spoken in the true Franciscan spirit. Thank you, Dr.
Simpson. On for Ol’ St. Francis!

LAPCHICK
BY GUS ALFIERI (SFP Class of ’55)
“[Gus Alfieri] provides, through one pivotal figure, a clearer understanding of the issues behind the development of modern basketball, of
its style of play, of its social significance and of its maneuverings to become profitable entertainment. Lapchick respected basketball, and
fans of the game will respect this warm and intelligent biography.” —Kirkus
Reverential Homage to Basketball Great Joe Lapchick
Provides a Priceless Look at the History of the Game
GUILFORD, CT (THE LYONS PRESS) — September 15, 2006 —Joe Lapchick. The name is legendary in the history of basketball. As a Hall of
Fame player and member of the Original Celtics barnstorming team, a coach of four national championship teams at St. John’s, and the first
coach of the New York Knicks, Lapchick made a lifetime of contributions to the game he loved. In LAPCHICK: The Life of a Legendary Player
and Coach in the Glory Days of Basketball (The Lyons Press, October 2006) the only biography dedicated to this legendary figure, Gus Alfieri
not only tells Lapchick’s life story but also provides a priceless look at the history of the game—from its early rule changes and barnstorming
and club teams, to dramatic National Invitational Tournament games (when the NIT was the best tournament in the country) and college basketball point-shaving scandals, to the formation of the National Basketball Association. Perhaps most significantly, Lapchick’s signing of the
Knicks’ Sweetwater Clifton, the first African-American player to sign with an NBA team, led the way in the movement to integrate the league.
Both an inspiring story of a pioneer sports figure and a nostalgic look at the era in which he played, Lapchick is a must-read for any basketball
fan with a passion for the game.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: GUS ALFIERI played for Joe Lapchick at St. John’s University for the school’s 1959 NIT championship team. He
teaches in the graduate school at Stony Brook University and directs the All-American Basketball Camp on Long Island. Alfieri lives in
Smithtown, New York. For more information about the author, e-mail [email protected] or log on to www.lapchickthebook.com.

Pathway to St. Francis
The “Pathway to St. Francis” is a special brick walkway at the statue of St. Francis in front of the school at the intersection of
Francis Lewis Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway. The “Pathway” was formally dedicated with the initial 400 bricks on
Sunday, November 2, 2003 as part of our Annual Alumni Memorial Mass and Brunch, and we plan to add more bricks each year
(with a dedication taking place every first Sunday in November). Thus far, there have been more than 600 bricks and several benches
engraved with associated contributions totaling over $112,000 to date.
Our goal is to establish two permanently endowed scholarships in the names of James Prendergast ’79 and Michael Lynch ’86,
who were taken from us at a very young age. Jimmy battled cancer and Mike, a New York City Fire Fighter, made the ultimate
sacrifice on 9/11.
With nearly 2,000 brick spaces still available, there is ample opportunity to be a permanent part of the future of St. Francis Prep
(and honor your loved ones) while also helping to keep Mike and Jimmy’s memories alive. The Pathway will eventually have 2,500
bricks.
Any questions should be addressed to Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. at (718) 423-8810 ext. 230. Thank you and God Bless.
