A Message From The Director
Spring and summer is such an exciting time! This spring the Parks and Recreation
Department is very excited to continue work on the River Run Preserve. River
Run Preserve is a 71.5-acre park that is located between Andersonville and Clark
Roads. This Park was added to the park system in 2011. This past year we have been
very busy in the development and stewardship of this piece of property. Our first priority
in 2016 was to cut a trail at the Andersonville Road entrance
of the park. We were able to accomplish some of the trail
work through a contractor who was on-site performing habitat restoration
as part of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant. The Township had received
a matching grant through their Partners for Fish and Wildlife program that
provided for restoration of a wet meadow at the Preserve. This year we will
be continuing to work on the trail to address some wet areas, along with
continuing to clear the view of the Shiawassee River that runs through the
park. River Run Preserve is one of our seasonal parks that is open in the
spring and closes with the first snowfall.
In addition to the exciting work going on
in the parks, we have many wonderful
programs and events offering recreational
opportunities for everyone. I would like to highlight a few of these exciting
opportunities that we have this season. This year our summer trail event
is called Tales and Trails and will be held on Wednesday, June 21st.
This year’s event will be highlighting the Storybook Trail and the trails of
the southern Shiawassee Basin Preserve. For those that love to hike the
northern Shiawassee Basin Preserve trails, we will be celebrating National
Trails Day with our annual Take A Hike event on Saturday, June 3rd. On
Tuesday, August 1st we hope that you will bring your family and friends
out for our first ever Taco Tuesday! This tasty event is a fundraiser for the
Parks and Recreation Department. Please see pages 8 and 9 for additional
information on these and other special events that we have scheduled.
I encourage you to look at some of our new One Day Workshops on pages 10 through 11. You will find
that this season we have added Easter Basket classes and an Infant, Child, & Adult CPR and First Aid
class. Make sure to check out our camps section of the brochure, pages 22 through 23, where you will find
that we have added new camps such as Genius Education Camps, Co-Ed Baseball Day Camp, Lacrosse
Beginners Day Camp and Football Mini-Camp.
I would also like to thank all the volunteers who volunteer their time and talent at our events and in the
parks. If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering with our Department, please contact our
office at (248) 846-6558 or by email at [email protected].
I hope to see you out living, learning and playing in our parks system!

LEGO® Engineering
Pullback Car Engineering
Enter the exciting world of LEGO learning! This class introduces
students to our special LEGO Education kits and provides an
exciting way to combine fun and learning. Students will enjoy
hands-on learning as the engaging LEGO building projects
start them down the path of STEAM (Science Technology
Engineering Art Math) enrichment concepts beginning with
an introduction to simple machines. Students will learn
through guided exploration into new concepts, and they will
be challenged to develop their imagination and creative ideas
into working designs. Younger students are introduced to
wheels and axles, gears, levers and pulleys and more while
older students will begin to motorize their designs! Students
become part of a junior engineering team as they work in
groups of 2-3 students. New builds every time.
Build and keep your own motorized pullback cars! Pullback
Car Engineering is a popular STEAM (Science Technology
Engineering Art Math) enrichment class that develops
problem solving and creativity as students build their very
own motorized pullback cars specifically selected to fit each
student’s grade and building skill level. Students will build
their own fleet of cars using a design pamphlet for each
vehicle and become junior engineers challenged to design
new creations using their BanBao car kits. Over the course of
the class, students participate in activities and experiments,
challenges and races designed to demonstrate science and
engineering concepts and laws such as gravity, potential
and kinetic energy. Students build different cars every time!
BanBao kits are made of quality bricks that are comparable to
and fully compatible with other brands like LEGO®. Students
take home and keep everything they build!

Raising Monarch Butterflies
Our North American monarchs are facing population decline and
they need our help to protect them, so come and learn how to raise
your own! It takes only 4 weeks for a monarch to grow from an egg
to a lovely butterfly. You’ll learn to identify eggs, caterpillars and
milkweed (its only food source). We’ll look for caterpillars or you’ll
be able to take some home (if available) so please bring a 1 lb. clear
deli container with lid (or something similar) to take yours and
watch it transform into an amazing graceful monarch.
No matter the age or skill level of your athlete we have a
fantastic opportunity for them to have fun while enhancing their
skills on the tennis court. Students will learn all the necessary
strokes and strategies for them to find success in competitive
tennis situations. We will have plenty of racquets for you to demo
if you don’t have one! Bring water!

Genius Engineering
Blast Off Rocketry!
LEGO® Engineering
It’s time to join the fun building and learning with Genius
Engineering! Students will use a variety of BanBao and other
toy brick kits similar to LEGO® kits to build their own collection
of interactive vehicles and other machines. This exciting class
is tailored to each age group’s skill level. Students join in the
adventure of creative building exploration, problem solving,
and risk taking as they learn and experiment with how
machines are designed and work. Students strengthen their
teamwork skills by engaging in groups as they assemble
and use their kits. Students take home and keep everything
they build!
Shoot for the sky! Students learn about rockets and
rocketry as they assemble, design and prepare their own
rocket for launch day. An experienced Genius Education
rocketry instructor supervises the launch site. Students
prepare their own rockets and use a remote launch trigger
after the instructor prepares each rocket on the launch site.
Students can retrieve their rocket to keep and take home to
show friends and family!
Enter the exciting world of LEGO learning! This class introduces
students to our special LEGO Education kits and provides an
exciting way to combine fun and learning. Students will enjoy
hands-on learning as the engaging LEGO building projects start
them down the path of STEAM (Science Technology Engineering
Art Math) enrichment concepts beginning with an introduction to
simple machines. Students will learn through guided exploration
into new concepts, and they will be challenged to develop their
imagination and creative ideas into working designs. Younger
students are introduced to wheels and axles, gears, levers and
pulleys and more while older students will begin to motorize their
designs! Students become part of a junior engineering team as
they work in groups of 2-3 students. New builds every time!

Tai Chi S.T.A.R. Seniors
Transcending and Revitalizing
The STAR program was developed by the World Tai Chi
Association specifically for seniors as a means of empowerment
to assist in the aging process, decrease its effects, improving
lung and brain function while also increasing strength
and stability of the limbs and core. Breathing exercises are
incorporated with a series of graceful movements gentle
enough for everyday practice and so readily accessible it can
be practiced either standing or seated in a chair. The National
Institute on Aging was one of the first in the US to study the
effects of a regular Tai Chi practice in participants over 55
finding a number of benefits! Improved memory, focus and
concentration in addition to increased circulation, stability and
strength, were some of the discovered benefits. Studies also
found a decrease in falls, weakness, fatigue and depression.
Please join us and discover how a regular practice could
benefit you.
