Some tips on how to
ride to work safely…

DON’T BE SHY
3
Don’t break the rules other road users
have to keep to. Don’t run reds or ride
on the pavement. Admittedly, there are
occasions that may require a pavement
hop (if a lorry is about to squash you) so
favour your life over the law, but in
general we’ll all be safer and other road
users more accepting of cyclists if you
stick to the rules.
If you’re coming up alongside another
vehicle, give the driver the eye. By looking
at them and making sure they’ve seen
you too, you have a greater chance of
them giving you the space you need. And
signal with vigour. Show the other road
users where you’re going.

FILTER TIPS
Overtake on the right so you’re always
visible. Coming up on the inside of
vehicles, especially lorries, is dangerous
as you won’t be in their eyeline; if they
decide to turn left you could be in danger.
Don’t hesitate around slip roads either;
where the slip road joins your road it can
be safer to move into the slip road and
then rejoin your road.
RED LIGHTS
4
BE SEEN
Wear reflective strips on your clothing
and put lights on your bike. Legally
you need a white front light, a red rear
light, a red rear reflector and four pedal
reflectors. Most cyclists don’t stick to all
the reflector regulations, but when
cycling in the dark or in poor weather,
being well lit up and visible to vehicles
could save your life.
