Calf Pneumonia:
Treatment Part 3
Emily Sycamore BVetMed MRCVS
It takes around seven days for a calf’s body to
repair damage to the lungs (caused by the various
pneumonia viruses and bacteria) to a sufficient level
that the natural defences within the lung are
re-established. It is therefore important that during
this time calves are covered with antibiotics, to help
prevent subsequent bacterial infections before the
defence systems are restored. This can be achieved
with repeated dosing with short-acting antibiotics,
or with a one-off injection of a long-acting antibiotic.
The key part is that the calves get seven days of cover.
Another key part of the treatment of pneumonia
in calves is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.
Anti-inflammatory drugs have 3 important roles:
●
They are anti-inflammatory, meaning that in a
case of pneumonia they will reduce inflammation
in the lungs which will maximise the area of
functional lung tissue and allow for better airflow
through the lung.

As we discussed in part one of this
series of articles, prompt identification,
isolation and treatment of calves with
pneumonia is key to managing the
disease on farm, but what are the best
drugs to treat with?
In reality, unless the pneumonia involves infection
with Mycoplasma species (in which case there is a
very limited number of licensed products available),
it is more the length of treatment with antibiotics
that is important rather than which specific antibiotic
is used.

They are analgesic, meaning that they will provide
pain relief which is important from a welfare point
of view. A pain-free calf is also much more likely
to keep eating and drinking which will aid a
quick recovery.
They are anti-pyrexic, meaning that they will bring
down a high temperature. This is key to making
the calf feel better, which again should hopefully
encourage it to keep eating and drinking, and
will lead to a short recovery period.
For more information on which antibiotic and
anti-inflammatory drugs may be suitable to use for
your animals, please contact us at the practice.
It is worth re-iterating that prevention is always
better than cure. By creating a healthy,
well-ventilated environment for your calves and by
protecting them through vaccination, the chances
of your calves succumbing to a case of pneumonia
are greatly reduced.
If you would like to discuss which vaccine
schedule might be most appropriate for your
farm, or if you wish to order any vaccines,
please contact us at the practice.

War of the Worms: Coming
to a cinema near you!
Robert Howard
Rodrigo Buainain
We welcome two new members of the
team this month - Robert Howard, our
new vet, and Rodrigo Buainain, our
new TB tester.
Robert graduated from Glasgow Vet
School in 2014 and spent two years in
mixed practice before joining the Scarsdale
farm team in August 2016. He lives on
a beef and sheep farm in the Derbyshire
Dales and enjoys all aspects of farm animal
medicine, particularly looking at farm
efficiency and management practices.
Robert enjoys working on the farm and
pottering around the countryside on his
horse Eva.
Rodrigo qualified as a vet in 1996, and
has spent most of the last twenty years
working with cattle. Work and family are
important to him, and he has a nine year
old son and a ten year old dog. In his free
time, he enjoys swimming and running.
Both Robert and Rodrigo are looking
forward to getting to know the Scarsdale
clients!
...goodbye to Mark
After eight months with us covering
maternity leave, Mark Challoner has left
to travel to New Zealand. We wish him
well on his adventures!
Ok, it’s not quite a feature-length film,
and you’ll have to watch it on your
computer rather than go for a night
out at the pictures, but if you’ve got a
spare five minutes, have a look at ‘War
of the Worms’, a new short animated
film about sustainable worm control
and anthelmintic resistance (and how
to avoid it!). The film can be viewed

The What’s, When’s, Why’s and How’s of
Veterinary Medicines - The Beef Edition
This interactive course aims to give
you the tools to be able to decide
which animals require treatment,
and what the appropriate drug and
dose might be.
More importantly it will help you decide
which animals do not need antibiotic
treatment and which drugs you should
not use! Ultimately the end result should
be a happy, healthy, resistance free herd
of cattle... Which means more money in
your pocket!
Course: Wednesday
2nd November 2016
at the Markeaton Farm Practice
between 10.00am - 3.00pm
These courses are kindly supported by
Boehringer so the price is £25.00 per
person + VAT (includes lunch). Places are
limited and on a ‘first come, first served’
basis. To book your place, please call our
reception team on 01332 294929.
