Bulletin 24th March 2016
Dear Parents,
Despite the relatively short term, it has yet again been a very busy one and the children and staff
are certainly all ready for a break and lots of chocolate! We look forward to welcoming
everybody back on TUESDAY 12TH APRIL, as Monday 11th April is an INSET day.
YEAR 3/4 PRODUCTION OF OINK!
What a fantastic way to end the term. The Y3/4 staff and children excelled themselves with
their performances. They certainly earned their pyjama movie treat this afternoon. Well done
to everyone involved – it was worth every minute of hard work to see the enjoyment that the
children got from performing their show.
STAFFING
This week we have said farewell to Mrs. Bantick, Mrs. Coy and to Phil Searl, our chef. We wish
them all well in their new ventures. After Easter, Mrs. Clarke will return to Potley Hill full time
and Mrs. Inglis and Mrs. Elkins will be taking over in Robin Class.
EASTER EGG COMPETITION
We had such a fantastic response to our Easter Egg Competition and were impressed by the
creativity shown by all the children who entered; it certainly made the judging process very
challenging. Congratulations to the winners, who each received a chocolate egg. All children who
took part also received a small, chocolatey Easter treat!
YR – Lucas Brooks, Elijah Kennedy and Ethan Halls
Y1/2 – Scarlett Twigge-Molecey, Luke Jones and Jessica Flounders
Y3/4 – Aimee Bullock & Lyla Wetherill, Jamie Flounders and Kayleigh Cox
Y5/6 – Arthur Rose, Fraser Jarvis and Rossia Rogers
SPORT RELIEF
Thank you very much for contributing to Sport Relief last Friday. We managed to raise a grand total
of £256.10.
SPELLING TESTS Y2 – Y6
Next term we are making a change to spelling tests from Y2 upwards, in order to help the children
secure and apply their knowledge of spelling rules and patterns. The children will
continue to bring home their list of words, which they should practise spelling in preparation for
their test. Once they have been tested on their list of words, their teacher will give them three
additional 'surprise words'; these will be words which follow the same spelling rule or pattern as
those on their main list but will test children's ability to apply the spelling rule correctly. They will
then be given a dictated sentence to write down; this sentence will include at least one word which
follows the spelling pattern of the week, as well as other key words which they should be able to
spell. Overall, the children will be able to earn an extra 5 marks for their spelling test: 3 for their
surprise words and 2 for the dictated sentence (1 mark for spelling every word in the sentence
correctly and 1 for punctuating it correctly). You will be able to see how your child has done in their
spelling test in the usual way. This approach will bring an extra level of challenge for children of all
abilities and will strengthen the link between spelling tests and independent writing. All too often,
children learn a list of words for a test and then struggle to spell these words correctly when writing
independently. To support your child at home, talk to them about the spelling pattern or rule as
they are learning their spellings and perhaps try throwing in some surprise words of your own!
Happy spelling!
FACEBOOK & PARENTS
Please can we remind all parents, once again, that if there any issues that arise in school, please
contact either the Class Teacher or Head Teacher directly, rather than commenting on social media.
It seems that there were some negative comments about tickets for the Y3/4 production this week.
This is particularly disappointing, considering the amount of work which goes into preparing such a
first class production and I’m sure you can imagine how upsetting it can be for staff when comments
are made in this way. As I am sure you will understand, we have to adhere to fire regulations and
cannot exceed the capacity of the hall. We always aim to allocate tickets in the fairest way possible
and do ensure that additional ticket requests are granted wherever possible but this is particularly
difficult for the evening performance, which is always the most popular.

Our Football Team won their match against St. Joseph’s school this week. The score was 5 – 2 and
Potley scored all 7 goals! They now go through to the semi-finals of The Standing Cup. The team
have already won the League and the Futsal tournament this year; if they also win The Cup, they
would be the first school in Hampshire to win all 3 tournaments in the same year!
Reminders…..
EARLYBIRD CLUB
We have attached a copy of the booking form for next term for your convenience.
SAINSBURY’S ACTIVE KIDS
Great news, it’s that time of year again and Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers are available when you
shop instore or online. We have the collection box in the ICT Suite, so if you have some vouchers
please ask the children to pop them into the box. Vouchers can be collected from 27th January - 3rd
May 2016. Thank you.
SCHOOL MEAL PRICE INCREASE
Along with all other Hampshire schools, we will be increasing the cost of school meals to £2.10, to
come in to effect on 11 April 2016 - the first increase in six years. This is to meet the rising costs of
providing school meals and continues to represent good value for money for a two course, freshly
cooked school meal. The weekly cost for 5 meals will therefore be £10.50.
Executive Lead Member for Children's Services, Councillor Keith Mans said: "A healthy lunch at
school contributes significantly to a child's wellbeing and their capacity to learn through to the end of
the school day.”
