Tip # 2 Dig a big enough hole! We have encountered a variety of methods our customers use for planting. One such is to leave the box on the root ball until the tree is placed in the ground and then remove the sides. Tip # 3 Score the root ball. Another method is to remove the box first and then place the tree. Regardless of what planting method you decide to use we always recommend you score the root ball! It helps the tree to produce new fibrous roots and encourages outward growth. Depending upon growth conditions it can take a year or more for a tree to become rooted in. Once the tree has been placed and straightened it will need to be anchored. Even if the tree is not likely to blow over movements of the root ball can break newly growing roots from the native soil and slow down the growth process. We use 18” Eye Anchors for 24” Box trees and 30” Eye Anchors for everything larger. Tip # 4 Centering the tree in the hole and anchoring. 18” x 4” 30” x 4” Build a dirt mound around the base of the tree and Water the dirt in thoroughly. It is important to insure that there are no air pockets between the root ball and the ground. Tip # 5 Build a dirt mound around the base of the tree. Upon delivery we recommend that all trees be watered until the root ball is completely soaked. Water will come out of the gaps and bottom of the container when the root ball is completely saturated. Jobsites can be chaotic places so please make certain that someone is responsible for checking and watering the trees until and after they are planted. Three factors that play a role in watering are soil conditions, the size of the tree, and weather conditions. As such there are no set rules. Tip # 6 Watering.
