Peace Through the Cross David Boyd March 25, 2016 Introduction • Issues? • The events themselves • What day was it? • Life at the Crossroads • Our Challenge Colossians 1:13-22 Col. 1:13 He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. 21 And you who were once estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him-- Outline • He is the Image of the Invisible God • He is the Firstborn of Creation • He brings Peace to us through the Blood of his Cross • The Impact on our Lives in 2016? Image of God • No Statues, Idols or Images of God (Ex. 20:4) • Appears to Abraham in Genesis 18 • Jacob Wrestles with God in Genesis 32: 28, 30 (Israel & Peniel) • Moses saw God • Angel of God's Face? Isaiah 63:9 • Jesus said to the Disciples "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father..." • Hebrews 1:3 "His Son is the radiance of his glory, the very image of his substance..." Firstborn of Creation • Does 'Fristborn' mean 'First Created'? • Literal meaning -'the first born child' as in Exodus 22:29 "The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me!" (Remember the plagues and the death of the 'Firstborn' throughout Egypt) Example Manasseh Gen. 41:51 • Non-Literal meaning -'a special or pre-eminent person' who would receive the inheritance and special blessings (Gen. 48:13-20 and later Jeremiah 31:9) • Jesus (Yeshua) was God's "one of a kind son" and Zechariah declared "When they look upon ME whom they have pierced, they will weep for HIM as one weeps over a Firstborn." 12:10 Peace through the Cross • Human sacrifice was practiced by many cultures. That is NOT what made this special • NOT just an example of self-less courage and sacrifice • As the sacrificial Lamb of Yom Kippur and the BLOOD of the Lamb at PASSOVER, Jesus' blood poured out on the Cross makes our Peace and Pardon Possible • It is the VALUE of the SACRIFICE that brings Eternal Value to us • "...through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross."
