YODEX 2014, Taiwan’s Young Designers’ Exhibition has just wrapped up in Taipei. The exhibition,
celebrating rising design talent in the country, has grown to become one of the most prominent design fairs
in the world, featuring fresh design talent and many works of excellence by graduates from design colleges
around the world.The exhibition covers a wide range of fields, including product design, visual
communication design, package design, craft design, digital media design, fashion design, as well as
space and landscape design.
buyMeDesign is very pleased to be working with YODEX as media partner and to be supporting emerging
designers in Taiwan. As part of our partnership we have been on the ground in Taipei running a Spot Design
campaign, highlighting the best emerging designs from rising talents in the city. Here’s what we found:

The designers behind Visible Air explain their inspirations thus: “In modern life, we strive for success
everyday, and forget to actually experience our life. Even if we live in the same environment everyday, the air
we breath in is slightly different.” They therefore, combined wood with iron, to encapsulate “Air”, and to give
everyday users of their stationery a real sense of this often under-appreciated element.

Designed by Wu Pei-Xuan, Hsu Ya-Yin and Hsiao Yu-Ting from Shu-Te University. Tableware of children is
dedicated to hungry kids. This ceramic hand made set reminds us of cute and fresh vegetables (cabbage,
carrot, salad leaves…). Surprisingly light and soft, its perfect for tiny hands to touch and hold. “It’s fragile also
but kids need to learn how to take care of precious things, it gives them a sense of responsibility” says Hsu
with a large smile on her face. Learning by eating sounds fun!

The Formosan Magpie and Swinhoe’s Pheasant are two unique birds of Taiwan that have been used to
inspire these two lamps. The Formosan Magpie designs display the shape and colourings of both the male
and the female bird. The switch of the light is designed to be on the inside and turned on through a twisted
motion of the bird’s body. The Swinhoe’s Pheasant inspired design, on the other hand, has combined the
technique of both wireless charging and touch switch, providing great convenience to users. Since it can be
placed anywhere, and the switch is easy to control. The use of different types of wood create a range of
interesting textures.
Xindingban

Michella Yan explains the traditional Taiwan inspirations behind Xindingbanf: “A special bag dedicated to
family and people we cherish, it is a reference to a special offering to ancestors in Hakkanese culture. This
offering is made of “mashed” rice and colored in red.”
