Dear Friends,
2011
was a year of great WVWA achievements, challenges and changes. In this
year WVWA accomplished significant stewardship progress, achieved
long time dreams, reached a milestone at the Evans-Mumbower Mill and
celebrated the success of many special events.
All of these successes and achievements were made possible with the support of the individuals,
foundations, companies and others listed in this Annual Report, along with the dedicated WVWA staff
and many loyal and talented volunteers.
The volatile global economy provided many challenges to WVWA and the Wissahickon Valley. It was
also a year of record-breaking weather obstacles. In 2011 heavy winter storms and snow, a very dry July,
August earthquake and Hurricane Irene, September’s Tropical Storm Lee, Halloween snow and record
setting rain all required extraordinary stewardship and planning measures.
In October, Executive Director Nancy Venner resigned and a search for the next WVWA leader began.

Stewardship
2011 was the busiest year in WVWA history for stewardship work. Through
a combination of persistence, partnership and experience, WVWA had more
projects in one year than usually occurs in multiple years.
Meadow
Projects
Wissahickon From the Top
W
VWA’s Wissahickon From the Top is the first step in
a restoration project that will continue for decades to come. By
starting upstream, the entire Wissahickon Creek will reap the
benefits of reduced stormwater damage and a decrease of the
sediment in the Creek. EPA enforcement action funded this project.
The project began in 2010 with the retrofit of an old stormwater basin; the next
phase of the project, in 2011, was more complex. WVWA worked in the stream
reach between North Wales Road and the Upper Gwynedd Waste Water Treatment
Plant. WVWA removed an old bridge that became a nuisance and caused stream
bank erosion and then restored the channel to stop any additional erosion.
Downstream from that project is another section that had experienced major erosion;
exposing and putting at risk a sewage pipe. WVWA reshaped the channel to direct
the force of the water away from that pipe and then rebuilt the stream bank over the
pipe for further protection. Downstream from that, WVWA performed additional
stream channel work to protect a natural wetland that was being lost to erosion.
I
n addition to the Wissahickon
From the Top initiatives, WVWA
created two meadow projects.
WVWA completed the Crossways
Preserve meadow planting and began
a meadow planting under the PECO
power lines near West Point Pike. This
will not only establish food and habitat
for birds, small mammals and insects,
but will capture storm runoff and get it
back into the ground to feed the Creek
in a low flow area. Another benefit will
be the beautification of this stretch of
the Green Ribbon Trail. WVWA is very
excited about this PECO partnership
and the opportunity to establish a new
meadow habitat.

Dam
Removal
M
oving downstream
near Gwynedd Valley,
WVWA received
funding from the Natural
Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)
to remove a derelict dam that WVWA
owned. The dam removal will greatly
improve stream health, allowing better
habitat and water quality. As part of this
project, WVWA removed the original
stepping stone crossing and will replace
that crossing in summer 2012, thanks to
the generosity of several donors.
Invasive Plant
Removal
I
n 2011, WVWA further increased its efforts to
eradicate invasive Japanese Knotweed along the banks
of the Creek. Many thanks to WVWA’s partners in this
endeavor who include REI, Germantown Academy, as
well as Eagle Scouts and many volunteers.
Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) and Giant
Knotweed (Polygonum sachalinense) were imported from
Asia for their decorative qualities and ability to stabilize
streambanks, as they grow quickly and provide ground cover.
They have since spread far beyond the places where they were
introduced, creating a significant invasive epidemic.
WVWA received a grant from REI in 2011 to continue
this important project.

Stepping Stone
Stream Crossings
T
he Rose Rubenstein Crossing, WVWA’s
latest stepping stone crossing on the Green
Ribbon Trail, was finally completed in late
December 2011. Experience this wonderful
crossing, which is located on WVWA’s Four Mills Preserve
near the intersection of Morris Road and Sheaff Lane,
across from Germantown Academy. This is WVWA’s longest
stepping stone crossing with 21 stones across the Wissahickon,
and connects WVWA’s Four Mills Preserve to Germantown
Academy and beyond. It is a heavy flooding area, but happily
the first few installed stones weathered Hurricane Irene and
Tropical Storm Lee shortly after the construction began and
came through with flying colors. Due to all the rain and high
water in the fall, the construction team including Kenney
Excavating and Paving had to delay the stone installation until
low flow and dry weather. Saly Glassman and Allan Syphers
made this long time WVWA dream a reality in memory of the
late Rose Rubenstein, who died in 2010.
WVWA has now installed five stepping stone crossings
along the Green Ribbon Trail, beginning in Upper Gwynedd
and now down to Fort Washington. These crossings allow
walkers, hikers and runners to cross the Wissahickon without
getting their feet wet.
Creek Cleanup
F
or the 41st annual Creek Clean
Up, WVWA joined forces with The
Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW)
to clean the Wissahickon Creek
from top to bottom. Over 300 volunteers of all
ages cleaned the entire Wissahickon Creek,
its many tributaries and the surrounding
trails. Volunteers were assigned to sections
of the Creek to collect trash. Once again in
2011 WVWA saw a dramatic decrease in the
number of tires collected. Whole Foods Market

Evans-Mumbower
2011 marked the milestone of its restoration
U
nder David Froehlich’s guidance, the
re-circulating water system was substantially
completed. The crowning achievement was that
water cascaded over the waterwheel for the first
time on December 22nd. In addition, the millwright, Ben
Hassett, replaced the stone crane, completed the head tank, and
returned the bag hoist to operation.
With the assistance of staff, dozens of volunteers conducted
eight Open House events, including Old Fashioned Mill Day.
The Mill Committee worked with the Education Committee
to provide lessons for approximately 750 third and fourth
graders from the Wissahickon School District and Germantown
Academy. Several new exhibits were constructed specifically
to demonstrate key principles that are basic to the science of
utilizing water power to perform work for the sustenance of the
community.
The History and Archives Subcommittee continued to
research the background of the structure and the owners of the
mill in order to put them into context for different time periods
as the mill evolved. As part of this objective, they permanently
obtained the original Mumbower ledger books from the Fort
Washington Historical Society. Also, another archeological dig
was initiated.
In 2011 volunteers continued their eight-year Mill
archeological dig. In addition, the volunteers began the
investigation of the possible blacksmith’s shop site.
Great thanks go to the committed Mill volunteers who make
all the enhancements and public programs possible, along with
the continued generosity of the Betz family.

Outreach Programs
I
n 2011, WVWA signature
events, including the Creek Cleanup in April; Birdathon in May;
TexMex 5K Race for Open Space
in June and the Fall Wissahickon Walk
and Trail Run, were all successful in
attracting participants and raising funds.

Tex Mex 5K Race for Open Space
m The 22nd Annual Tex Mex 5K Race for Open Space
with a field of 1700 participants, was a wonderful triumph for all
involved. The Tex Mex Connection Bar & Restaurant in North
Wales once again hosted this great event. Green Ribbon Teams
enhanced the event and raised additional WVWA funds.

m WVWA appreciates the partnership with the Ambler
Area Running Club (AARC). WVWA was again chosen as the
co-beneficiary of both AARC 2011 races: the Frostbite 5-Miler
and Phil’s 5-K Race. Many AARC members are now WVWA
members, use the trails and volunteer to assist with stewardship
programs and special events.
Education
The WVWA Environmental Education Program
educated nearly 1,500 area students in 2011.
W
VWA’s efforts taught Wissahickon School District and
Germantown Academy students various topics including
wetlands and watersheds, the historic importance of
Pennsylvania mills, and the science associated with water
quality. Third grade students studied wetlands
and watersheds while experiencing hands-on activities in nearby
wetlands. Pennsylvania history- ideas and inventions- allowed fourth
graders to explore the importance of local mills while practicing
mill activities first-hand at the Evans-Mumbower Mill. Finally,
ninth grade students discovered the science behind water quality
monitoring by testing stream turbidity, velocity, and stream mapping.
WVWA looks forward to furthering the goal of promoting
awareness and appreciation of environmental issues through
education so that the community can make sound choices for a sustainable,
ecologically healthy future.

Green Ribbon
Gathering 2011
W
VWA hosted a festive celebration on September 17
at Manderley Farm, the home of the Walbridge family,
to celebrate land preservation in the Wissahickon Valley.
Nearly 300 people attended this gala evening filled
with friendship, music and camaraderie amidst beautiful open space. On
November 5, a Patron Party was celebrated at All Around Farm, the home
of Johanna Walters and Brian Sweeney.

Bear Country Golf Classic
I
n May a new event was added – the Bear
Country Golf Classic, thanks to the generosity of
a long time loyal WVWA donor. A festive cocktail
party and auction followed the golf at the magnificent
home of two gracious and generous WVWA donors.

Water Quality Monitoring
Stream Monitoring & Assessment
Program (Stream MAP)
W
VWA’s Stream Monitoring and Assessment Program
(Stream MAP) characterizes water/habitat quality conditions
at 11 stations throughout the watershed. This was the ninth
year that WVWA has collected water quality data and 2011
marked a significant improvement and expansion of the program with the
introduction of a standardized method known as the “Rapid Bioassessment
Protocol” (RBP). The RBP involves the collection of data to assess water
quality (e.g., nutrients, bacteria), habitat quality (e.g., bank stability, riparian
shading), and stream biological communities (e.g., aquatic insects as
indicators). Stream MAP includes quarterly sampling of water and habitat
quality measures, and twice-annual sampling of aquatic insects. Stream
MAP operates with the guidance of the Water Resources Committee.
A remote, continuous water quality monitoring station was
installed by WVWA during 2011, thanks to the vision and loyal support
of Saly Glassman and Allan Syphers. This station is located adjacent
to the WVWA’s office and powered by solar cells, and uses sensors to
measure and upload real-time data for dissolved oxygen concentration
and specific conductivity. These data are displayed on a dedicated
computer located in WVWA’s office for visitors to see (soon this will be
available on-line at WVWA’s web site). Stream flow-rate measurements are
also reported from a USGS flood gauge station located at Skippack Pike.

WVWA’s standardized Stream MAP is used to evaluate changes and
trends in stream conditions, especially upstream-downstream differences
and any improvement or degradation observed over time. Results and
recommendations from WVWA’s Stream MAP are reported to state and
federal agencies and shared with partner organizations. These entities
utilize the data to inform their activities and resource management
decisions. Importantly, results from Stream MAP are also provided to local
municipalities in order to help identify and reduce sources of pollution, and
to help prioritize habitat enhancement, restoration and land preservation
projects. Using results from Stream MAP to help inform recommendations for
improved land use management is at the heart of WVWA’s Mission.

Financial Report
T
he Association’s accounts are kept on a
calendar year basis. In 2011 income from
all sources totaled $1,018,800. Of that total, $445,880 came from grants for programs or for operating expenses; $127,760 came from
investments; $124,468 came from memberships;
$284,700 came from Special Events, $17,028 came from Environmental Education programs, and $18,964 from sales.
Expenses totaled $1,283,463. General and
Administrative expenses were $299,999; Fundraising
expenses were $167,373. Program area expenses
were: Education and Outreach, $203,294; Land
Acquisition, $8,417; Land & Water Protection,
$528,871; and Evans Mill, $75,529.

The mission
of the
Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association is to
protect the quality and beauty of the Wissahickon
Creek and to enhance life in the Watershed.
WVWA carries out its mission through:
mProtection and enhancement of open space
and natural areas in the watershed.
mPromoting awareness and appreciation of
environmental issues through education so
that the community can make sound choices
for a sustainable, ecologically healthy future.
mPromoting wise land use and management of
natural resources in the Watershed.
mPreserving historic and cultural sites that are
of significance to the Wissahickon Creek.
