BBDC Has a New Home!
The Broadway Bound Dance Company has moved to a new
location. We are now associated with the Richard Gaines
Academy for the Performing Arts located at 254 Town Center
Drive, Glendale Heights, IL 60139. Our performance company
is called the RG Dance Company. It’s members are between
the ages of 11 and 17. We will be scheduling our first per-
formances in the next month and hope to see you there. Our
website, www.broadwaybounddance.org has up-to-date information on our performances and other events. If you would
like us to perform at one of your events, please contact us at

Chicago’s Thanksgiving Parade 2009
Dancing is like
dreaming with
your feet!
-Constanze
Our tappers participated in the 2009 Thanksgiving Parade
on November 26th with Chicago Human Rhythm Project.
The group tapped their way down State Street in front of
thousands of parade goers. Even though the weather was a
little on the wet side, our dancers enjoyed themselves and
are looking forward to next year’s parade.
Richard, you have a studio. Really?
If you had asked me, not so long ago, if I could ever imagine
myself as a studio owner, you would most certainly have gotten a very different answer than you would today. I spent
many years listening to the laments of studio owners: the
sleepless nights, the endless deadlines, the financial concerns. I never thought that was for me. Something happened,
something changed, I began to look around the studios where
I taught. I listened to the parents of many wonderfully talented
students discuss the sudden downward shift of the economy
and how the dance lessons that they paid for month after
month were no longer in the budget. There would be no
“Company” for their child this year. It did not take me long to
realize that there had to be another way that I could make
lessons and “Company” attainable to all.
I remember being a young dancer and scrubbing the mirrors in the studio where I took lessons, just to be able to afford classes. I remember the hours mopping and waxing
floors, taking out the garbage and the sound of the oversized
vacuum that I used in the lobby. I would have done that for as
long as I needed to so that I could continue to take classes.
This is a different time, school demands much more of
students’ time and energy. Although the desire is there, there
does not seem to be enough time to be able to earn their
lessons on their own.
I decided to open my own dance studio and restructure the
way the tuitions are calculated, to implement another way for
parents to afford to keep their children in the performing company without it being financially exhausting. I realized that it is
far more important and rewarding to know that we, at The
Richard Gaines Academy for the Performing Arts, may have
opened a door, which may have otherwise been closed to a
potentially phenomenal dancer, because we have found a way
to make it affordable to everyone.
Times are hard. It is not easy for many of us in the current
economy. I knew when I began this venture that I was not here
to make a lot of money. I know without a doubt that as long as
I continue to see incredible students dancing their hearts out,
happy to be here because they can, because they have a
genuine love, because their spirit soars when they are here
dancing; then my work is done.
I am lucky to have a staff who share my vision and my
dreams for this studio. We will continue to build this Academy
towards what I know has the potential to be a creative institution of impeccable training in the arts while remaining accessible to all who have the desire and drive to attend.
