PANTHER NEWS MAY 2017 - Poulsbo Middle School

PANTHER NEWS
MAY 2017
Dear Poulsbo Middle School families,
Teacher and Nurse Appreciation Week
During the week of May 8-12 we will be recognizing teachers, nurses, and other certificated employees for
their contributions to the education and development of our students. You can make this a very special
week by sending a note or email to teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses who have made a difference in your child’s life.
State Testing
Each spring Washington public school students are tested and this past week we began assessing our student on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in the areas reading. In the next week or so we will
begin assessing students in the area of math. The Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) will continue
to be used for science tests. This testing meets state and federal requirements, and the following is a
breakdown of tests at the middle level:
Grades 6, 7, and 8—SBA reading and math scheduled during math and English/language arts
classes
Grade 8—MSP science scheduled by your child’s first-period teacher
We pay close attention to the results of state testing and should have our results in June. This information
helps us improve the way we teach to better meet students’ learning needs. This is also an opportunity for
students to see how much they have grown from the previous year. Please help your child be prepared for
testing by making sure he or she is getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and arriving to
school on time. Also we are asking students to bring earphones to use during the assessment that they
are comfortable with but will have some available for student who need them. We want to be partners with
you to ensure your child’s success in school. Thank you for your help and support during this important
time!

ASB News
Hey Panthers!
Happy spring! We’ve been having a blast so far. We had our creative and
entertaining spring production. Good job to everybody who participated.
Track had two meets in April. There are some outstanding athletes at this
school! Band and choir visited and performed for several elementary
schools. They sounded terrific! The 2017-2018 PMS ASB speeches
and elections were held. All the students did a terrific job! Looking
ahead, Teacher Appreciation week is the second week in May; show
your teachers you appreciate them! Fifth graders will be visiting at the
end of May, remember to welcome them with Panther spirit! The
Honor Society induction is also in May. Coming up is Viking Fest!
Cheer on your Panther band in the parade! There will be no school May
29 for Memorial Day. Let’s make it a marvelous May, Panthers!

Online Check-In
Begins May 15
Starting May 15, Online Check-In will open for the 2017-2018 school year. Students need to be
“Checked-In”, which will confirm our students’ continued enrollment for the new school year. The
purpose of the Online Check-In process is to verify that your child will be attending Poulsbo Middle
School in September, to verify and update student demographic information, and to complete online
forms such as Acceptable Use Policy required for computer/internet use, and approve or disapprove
release of directory information, which includes your child’s photo. This process will reduce the amount
of forms sent home at the beginning of the school year. All students who have completed the Online
Check-in process will be given a schedule at Panther Preview in August. If you have more than one
child attending Poulsbo Middle School, you will need to complete the Online Check-in process for each
child. If you do not have a computer or need assistance, you may complete the Online Check-in Process
at the District Office Building #300 over the summer (during business hours) or at Poulsbo Middle
School after staff return in August. Computers are also available at the local library. It is our sincere
hope that by using Online Check-in, the start of the new school year will be stress free.
To access Online Check in, go to <nkschools.org> and click on Skyward under Quick Links. Once
you’ve signed on to Skyward you will see “17-18 Poulsbo Middle School Online Check-In” from the
menu on the right.
If you need help with your Skyward log-in or password, or if you know your child will not be returning to
Poulsbo Middle School next fall, contact Dawn Navarette, Counseling Secretary at 396-3213 or

Honor Society News
Hey there panther families!
Honor Society was hard at work
during April, which is when we
started planning for our Dance coming up this month. One more Honor
Society event coming up in May is
the PMS Grounds Beautification.
Listen to the announcements for the
date.
All new members and current 7th
grade members can pay their dues
in the main office (dues are $10.00
this year). Service hour forms are
due by May 11.
Mark your calendars for May 16
because our induction ceremony is
coming up! All members are invited!
This special event is for welcoming
new members and honoring threeyear veterans.
Seventh graders, it is time to start
thinking about running for executive
board next year.

Honor Society President
IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS
Low-income seventh and eighth grade students may begin the enrollment process for
the College Bound Scholarship, a financial aid program for students and families
concerned about the cost of attending college. Eligible students sign a pledge
promising to graduate from high school, maintain a 2.0 GPA, and be good citizens.
In exchange, the State of Washington pays for college tuition and books for up to four
years, or until the student earns a bachelor’s degree.
The deadline to apply is June 30 of an eligible student’s eighth grade year.

Eighth-grade
Students’ Parents & Guardians
Planning has begun! Help make this
special middle school event for your eighth graders successful!
We are in need of more helping hands! We need parents to
help with door prize donations, food donations, clean-up crew,
as well as, helping with decorations.
8th Grade Party/Dance is Friday, June 2, from 7 – 10pm
in the gym/cafeteria
Our school and ASB help and support
parents who plan this event.
The last planning meeting for
parents who are interested in
helping will be held May 16, at
6:00pm in the library.
Thank you PTA staff appreciation for providing
the staff with fresh popped popcorn! It was such
a delightful way to end the busy day!!!
Mark your calendar for this year’s Great Give, and help spread the word that the event is a great deal for North Kitsap students.
Here’s why: Tax-deductible donations to the North Kitsap Schools Foundation on that day will go further thanks
to more
than $100,000 in matching funds from Great Give sponsors. That means more money for programs that provide
enrichment
and support for North Kitsap students.
To support NK students during the Great Give, go to www.nkschoolsfoundation.org beginning May 2, right after midnight
continuing through the day and ending 11:59pm. Make a donation of $10 or more through the Great Give link. Even a small
donation is important because it can help the foundation qualify for a $1,000 award for the small organization with the most
donors. The foundation earned a second-place prize last year and can win the top award this year with your help.
Thank you for supporting NK students May 2!

There are athletic eligibility requirements for fall sports
(September sports are volleyball, cheer squad, cross
country, and football). The Washington Interscholastic
Athletics Association (WIAA) now requires that an
athlete pass five out of six classes at the end of the
semester prior to the sports season in order to be
eligible. Thus, the gr ades your child ear ns in J une
will have an impact on his or her eligibility for the Fall
2017 sports. Students who don’t meet the requirement
may still try out and practice with the team but will be
unable to compete until the suspension period is up.
The suspension period at the middle school is three
weeks.
We look forward to seeing our athletes in
August or September. Remember: June grades count!

a one-day, online charitable giving event designed to raise money.
With over 124 park properties, 500+ miles of long-distance trails,
120,000 acres of public land and 770 officially registered historic
structures; your state parks are a treasured resource here in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, due to past budget cuts, state parks
struggle to improve trails, repair facilities, or maintain interpretive
programs. WSPF is the only state-wide organization committed to
protecting, enhancing, and advocating for Washington’s beautiful
state parks. Donations from our members, and from people like you,
fund park improvement projects, special events and interpretive
programs across the state.
Be Safe
this summer
We feel so grateful and lucky to live in one of the most beautiful
states in the country and to have support from people like you.
WSPF helps fund Park Improvement Projects, raises awareness and
funding for parks at events at our state capital and strengthens our
parks Friends Group network. Let’s make this year even better –
together! http://wspf.org/givebig-for-your-state-parks/

Three ways to help your child feel like
ATTENDANCE
a resource:
Insist on regular attendance through the last day of school

you’re trying to make.

Your child has a fever. That is a definite reason to keep her
home from school. “Spring fever,” however, doesn’t count.
School is still in session and your child needs to be present. As
tempting as it may be to let your child “take a break” after staying up late to work on a project or to skip school because the
project isn’t quite finished—or because it’s a particularly beautiful day outside—don’t give in.


The time for end-of-year exams is approaching. Reviewing for these exams is impor tant
to your child’s success. Your child needs to be at school.
Your child still has regular schoolwork and assignments. In addition to exams. Missing
school at this busy time can cause your child to fall behind very quickly.
Ask for her or his opinion on a decision
Have a family meeting and get everyone’s
ideas on accomplishing household tasks.
Share the decisions and share the work.

Plan a family outing
based on where your
child would like to go
(within reason).
BUILDING SELF_ESTEEM
Compile all compliments
Adolescents take criticism seriously. They
tend to dwell on the negative things people
say. Help your child do the opposite. Suggest
Education is your child’s top priority. That’s true even when the
spring weather beckons. Allowing your child to miss school
(except for illness or family emergencies) sends your child the
message that school is only important some of the time. Make
sure you schedule medical appointments and family vacation
during times when school in not in session.

UNDERSTANDING MONEY
the value of money
TALKING AND LISTENING
Parents often tell children,
“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”
Getting information out of a middle schooler can be tough. “Did you have
a good day?” you ask. “Yes,” your child answers. “Did you do well on
your test?” “yeah,” she responds. Sound familiar? These tips will encourage her to say more:
1.
2.
Focus on what and how instead of asking questions that can be answer ed with a
simple yes or no. For example, “What did you learn in math?” or, “How did your test
go?” It helps to be specific.
Start with “Tell me… .” You might say, “Tell me about your day” or , “Tell me
what Mrs. Baker said about your project.”.
Now is a great time to practice these important conversational skills. They may be your
best bet during the teen years, when kids often clam up most.
Here are some ways to help the
message sink in:

Talk with your child about
money and how you make it. Explain why
it’s irresponsible to overspend.

Let your child earn money. Nearly every
child can do a few odd jobs.

Discuss what your child sees and hears
in the media. Help him learn how to
differentiate between needs and
wants.

MEDICATION PICKUP
The end of the school year is fast approaching. We would like to
remind all parents whose children have medications at school that
they need to be picked up no later than June 19, at 10:40am. Medications
left after that time will be destroyed. Expired medications are automatically
destroyed unless parents have specifically asked they be returned.
For 8th grade parents, you will want to check with the high school to get
appropriate forms and find out about their medication protocols for next year.
Thank you for taking care of this in a timely way. If you have questions, you
may call the Health Room coordinator, at 360-396-3206.
