Announcing the 2016 Performing Arts Department Production of SWEENEY TODD The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (School Edition) Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Book by Hugh Wheeler Based on an adaptation by Christopher Bond The Newnan High School Performing Arts Department announces the 2016 spring musical production of Sweeney Todd School Edition. Auditions for cast members will take place on Saturday, November 21, 2015. Any current Newnan High student is eligible to audition. Attached are items that will assist you in preparing, including a description of the musical, a list of characters to be cast, and a tentative rehearsal schedule for the production. Finally, there are forms that will need to be completed and signed by you and your parents. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street School Edition Sweeney Todd, a worldwide success since being awarded 8 TONY's (including Best Musical) for its Broadway premiere, has been adapted for high school performers in Sweeney Todd School Edition. Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler have crafted a tasty, thrilling, theatrical treat that has simultaneously shocked, awed, and delighted audiences across the world. Drawn from the infamous tale from Victorian England, Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun! This special School Edition has been masterfully adapted, working directly with Mr. Sondheim, to retain the dark wit and grand scope of the original work, with a few lyric and key changes to facilitate high school productions. At the show's core is a challenging score of epic proportion with two tasty tour de force roles in Sweeney and his accomplice Mrs. Lovett. Roles to be Cast We expect to cast a minimum of 36 actors in the company with a balanced number of men and women. Colorblind casting will be used for all roles. We will cast principal and featured roles as follows. Sweeney Todd, formerly Benjamin Barker, is a barber returning to London after years of wrongful imprisonment. He is determined to seek revenge against the people who sent him away and is desperate to reunite with his wife and daughter. After learning the fate of his family and initially failing at his revenge against the individuals who have wronged him, he turns against the corrupt society as a whole. The role requires an actor with a commanding presence and great vocal skills and control. Vocal range: G(1) – F#(3); bass/baritone Mrs. Lovett is a vigorous, slatternly woman who runs a pie shop. She is also an opportunist who has always had a fondness for Todd/Barker and would do anything in her power to be with him. She is an intelligent woman who uses Sweeney’s revenge plot to her advantage. This role provides some of the lighter moments in the show so requires a great singer with good comic timing. Vocal range: F#(2) – E(4); alto Anthony Hope is a cheerful, young ship’s mate who saved Todd at sea. A typical stock character of melodrama, he is very naïve and hopeful. Anthony is the romantic hero of the musical, trying to free his beloved from her dreadful fate. His pining for Johanna is pure and sincere. Vocal range: B(1) – F#(3); tenor Johanna is a young, exquisitely beautiful girl. She is not aware that she is actually the daughter of Todd. She is the ward of Judge Turpin and feels trapped in her situation, fending off his lewd advances. She falls for Anthony at first sight and does everything in her power to be with him. Vocal range: C(3) – Bb(4); soprano Beggar Woman is a ragged, mad creature of the streets. She senses the deception of Todd and Lovett and tries to warn the citizens of London. Though deranged, she is intuitive and speaks more truth than other characters. The revelation of her true identity adds to the tragic outcome of the story. Vocal range: A(2) – G#(4) – mezzo Judge Turpin is an egocentric, autocratic magistrate. He lusted after Benjamin Barker’s wife and sentenced Barker to deportation to have her for his own. After Mrs. Barker poisoned herself, he took her young daughter, Johanna, as his ward. As she has grown into a young woman, he has fallen in love with her and is determined to take her for his wife. The actor should be able to portray age and power. Vocal range: E(1) – F#(3); bass 1 The Beadle is the obsequious assistant to Judge Turpin. He also lusted after Barker’s wife and had a hand in helping the Judge get rid of him. This is a great role for a character actor. Vocal range: B(1) – C(4); tenor Tobias Ragg is the simple-minded adolescent assistant to Pirelli. After Pirelli’s death, he becomes the assistant at the pie shop. Though naïve, he becomes suspicious of Sweeney and tries to warn Mrs. Lovett. He ultimately thwarts Todd, but is driven mad in the process. Vocal range: Bb(2) – A(3); tenor Adolfo Pirelli is an excessively flamboyant Italian barber, later revealed to be an Irishman named Daniel O’Higgins. A swindler, he tries to dupe the public into buying his “miracle elixir” and to blackmail Todd into paying hush money. This is a great role for a character actor. Vocal range: G#(2) – A(3); tenor Jonas Fogg is the owner of the lunatic asylum. For the right price, he will accept and exploit “patients” regardless of their sanity. No solo singing. The Company comments on the action of the musical. They portray the citizens of London, inmates of the lunatic asylum, police and other supporting characters. The Company needs to be strong singers and actors. Some members of The Company may be assigned to a dance corps to be featured during several numbers in the show. Audition Procedures 1) All Newnan High School students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12 are invited to audition. 2) Carefully check the proposed rehearsal schedule. You should have no unresolved conflicts for the entire rehearsal and performance period in order to be cast in this show. Detailed call sheets will be published upon casting the production. You should mark one copy of the tentative rehearsal calendar with any conflicts that you can’t resolve. Unresolved conflicts might keep you from being cast in the musical. See Mr. Ramseur or Ms. Robbins before auditions if you have questions about conflicts. 3) Both you and your parents must sign the Rehearsal Agreement. You should turn it in when you arrive at your audition. This verifies that you have reviewed the information and agree to all the rules and requirements. You will not be cast without a signed rehearsal agreement and marked conflict calendar. 4) Sign up to audition on the bulletin board outside of the drama room. Signups will begin on Monday, November 9. Be signed up before the end of the school day on Friday, November 20 to secure a slot. 5) Auditions will include singing, acting, and dancing. Everyone who auditions will be required to prepare a solo vocal selection to sing at their audition. Everyone who auditions will learn a dance sequence which they will perform for the audition judges. Those who want to be considered for a speaking role will perform a monologue for the audition judges. 6) All those auditioning must prepare one or more song selections from Sweeney Todd School Edition, as detailed in this packet. 7) Audition tracks will be available online and at auditions. You should not audition a cappella. 8) If you wish to have a named speaking role, you must present a monologue at your audition. The monologue should last no longer than one minute. It is recommended that you present a monologue from a contemporary play that is in the style of Sweeney Todd School Edition. You may not choose a monologue from Sweeney Todd School Edition. 9) You may be asked to read from the script. A copy of the script is available in room 95. While the script may not be removed from the room, you may come before or after school to read it. 10) Dress appropriately for your audition. Your face should be visible at all times. 11) Callbacks (if necessary) will be held during the evening of Saturday, November 21. 12) The cast list will be posted as soon after auditions as is possible. It is expected to be available by the end of the day on Friday, December 4. A notification will be sent by Remind101 when the cast list is posted. 13) Auditions for Sweeney Todd School Edition will be closed. Deliberations by the Sweeney Todd School Edition casting team will be kept confidential. If a key role cannot be cast from initial auditions, an additional audition may be held for that role. If you have questions about auditions or audition procedures, contact Mr. Ramseur or Ms. Robbins. 2 Choosing an Audition Song You will sing one or more selections from Sweeney Todd School Edition for your audition. Selections are based on the character or role you wish to be considered for and will allow you to demonstrate the vocal range required for the character. While you will only sing these excerpts at your audition, it is recommended that you become familiar with the entire song so that you will be better able to communicate the meaning of the passage. If you are interested in interviewing for one of them, see Mr. Ramseur as soon as possible to schedule an interview. Interviews should be held before Friday, December 4. 1) Costume Crew Leader – Analyzes the script for costume needs including any masks or puppets and coordinates the gathering, building, and care of costumes for the duration of the production. Inventories all costume pieces and maintains accurate records. Will train dressers and cast in fitting of costumes. 2) House Manager – Recruits and trains a student crew to work in the lobby on production days, assisting the adult staff in providing for the safety and comfort of the audience. 3) Make-Up/Hair Crew Leader – Analyzes the script for make-up and hair requirements. Assembles and trains a crew of workers to train/assist the staff in correct application of period appropriate make-up and hair styles. The make-up/hair crew leader maintains an inventory of supplies. 4) Publicity Manager – Gathers information for program, posters, flyers, etc. and other items that will be used to publicize the show. Researches and develops a study guide to be used by teachers in preparing their classes for attending the production. Assists in the creation of publicity materials and helps with on-site ticket sales. 5) Sound Crew Leader – Analyzes the script for required sound effects, gathers and/or creates of sound effects and voice-overs, and incorporates sounds with music to create a full sound plot for the show. The sound crew leader is expected to learn the basic operation of wireless microphones and will assist the sound designer with operation of sound equipment during dress rehearsals and productions. 3 Participation Expenses There is a required participation fee for all members of the cast, staff, and crew of Sweeney Todd School Edition. Part of this fee is used to help pay expenses such as costumes, props, sets, backdrops, and other large ticket expenses. Part of the fee goes to help pay for meals for cast, staff, and crew during production week. No one will be denied participation in Sweeney Todd School Edition based on finances. However, it is the responsibility of the student or parent to meet with Mr. Ramseur prior to auditions or interviews to make alternative arrangements if you are unable to pay participation fees. Failure to pay fees or make prior arrangements will result in a hold being placed against your report card for unpaid fees. Required Expenses Production Fee – $75.00 per company member is paid to help fund upfront expenses such as sets, costumes, wigs, and props. This fee includes payment for meals and snacks served during dress rehearsal week. Also included in this fee is a souvenir t-shirt for the show (color logo on t-shirt for cast, “black on black” for crew). This expense is shared by all members of the cast, staff, and crew. Program Ad – Each member of the cast, staff and crew is expected to sell one $60 half-page ad, or the equivalent thereof, in the souvenir program. Revenues from the sale of this ad will go to the general production fund for the musical and to help pay printing costs of the program and publicity materials. Ads can be sold to local businesses, churches, or civic clubs. Families may wish to buy an ad to honor their child’s participation in Sweeney Todd School Edition. Prices range from $20 for a business card-sized ad to $100 for a full page. Ad contracts will be made available to all company members once the show has been cast. After selling any combination of ads totaling $60, additional ad revenue can be credited to the seller for use in paying show related expenses. Ad revenues are non-transferrable and can only be used to pay expenses related to Sweeney Todd School Edition. The Performing Arts Department Musical is funded by a separate account from all other Band, Chorus, or Drama activities. All additional revenues from ad sales for the musical program will go into the general budget for Sweeney Todd School Edition. All profits from Sweeney Todd School Edition will be used to pay the rights and rentals for the 2017 Performing Arts Department Musical. In keeping with our current policy, no ad revenues from Sweeney Todd School Edition can be transferred to any other school account. Any ad proceeds beyond the amount used for production fees, make up, costume fees, meals, shoes, or any other show-related expense will be absorbed into the general fund for future musicals and will remain in that fund. Optional Expenses Shoes – Most female actors in Sweeney Todd School Edition will wear stage character shoes which cost approximately $40 a pair. Some characters might be able to use other styles of shoes or boots. Specific needs depend on the role and the costume. We will place an order for character shoes during the rehearsal period. NOTE: We keep a small number of shoes in stock for sizing, but for health reasons, we do not loan or rent shoes. All shoes are the responsibility of and become the property of the actor. Make Up – Actors are encouraged to purchase and learn how to use theatrical make up. A basic kit can be purchased from any one of several costumers in the Atlanta area for $20. To save time and fuel costs, we will place an order through the school. Order forms will be provided to those cast in the show. Instructions on applying the makeup will be given in rehearsal. Rehearsal Calendar and Participation Contract Attached to this packet are two copies of a form. One side contains a proposed, tentative rehearsal schedule. This is a schedule of all of the blocks of time in which we intend to hold group rehearsals of some sort – dance, singing, or acting. Not every cast member will need to be at every rehearsal. After we have cast the show, we will begin to publish a series of call sheets showing exactly what we will work on each day and who will need to be present. The only way we can do this, though, is to have information from you. On the second copy of the calendar, mark every date that is a conflict for you. You are to turn in this marked calendar prior to your audition. Without a complete conflict calendar on hand, we will not consider you for a role in the musical. On the back of the calendar is a contract that explains the responsibilities of the directors, the performers, and the parents/guardians of the cast members. Read it carefully and turn it in prior to your audition. Without a signed contract on file, we will not consider you for any role. 4 Important Note About Rehearsals All cast members are required to be at all six Saturday Boot Camp rehearsals and at any rehearsals held during the months of November, December and March. Clear your schedule now so that you are available to attend each of these rehearsals if you are cast in the show. A Note About Film and Audio Versions of Sweeney Todd School Edition The recent film musical of Sweeney Todd is based on the original 1979 stage production, not the version that we have licensed. Not every song from the musical is in the film and there are lyric changes and additional songs that we will not use. You may wish to watch the film musical before you audition. There are good actors and good performances and the film will give you a good idea of the characters and story of the musical. Before you watch the film, however, be warned that some language and violent images may require your parents’ permission to view (NOTE: the stage version that we are performing contains very little language that will require editing and the violence is highly-theatrical, stylized stage violence with a minimum of gore). If you want to watch a more representative filmed version, try to locate the 1982 video of the original Broadway production starring George Hearn and Angela Landsbury. It is available on DVD, though some clips might be found on YouTube. You might also want to look for the concert version starring George Hearn and Patty Lupone that frequently appears on YouTube. There are also many excellent cast recordings of Sweeney Todd on the market. If you wish to buy one, we recommend that you purchase either the Original or Revival Broadway cast recordings. Be advised that these use some different keys and arrangements from the version that we are producing. The film soundtrack is good, but the lyrics, keys, and arrangements are very different. You may want to own it, but make sure that you also listen to a stage cast perform the songs. We have a recording of a high school cast performing the School Edition that we have licensed. It will be in the drama room, if you would like to listen to it. If you do watch the film version or listen to a cast recording, please do not come to your audition and imitate another performer. We want to see your audition, not your attempt to mimic Angela Landsbury, Johnny Depp, or any other performer. Their performances and interpretations belong to them. Make the audition your own. Some Other Thoughts We are pleased that you are interested in participating in Sweeney Todd School Edition. As you complete the paperwork to be involved, please seriously consider what you are doing. Being a part of a production like this is a major commitment – to the directors, the cast, the crew, and everyone else involved in the show. Make sure you understand what is expected of you in the rehearsal period and during a performance. While not everyone will be required to attend every rehearsal, make sure that you check your calendar closely for conflicts. If we know about conflicts before you audition, we can take them into consideration and possibly work the rehearsal schedule around those dates. Once we cast, though, that’s almost impossible. Our guideline is that if we didn’t need you, we wouldn’t have cast you, so your presence at rehearsals makes a big difference. Is the musical for everyone? No. There are some students who are just too busy to participate in the cast or crew of a full-scale musical production. We have found that most students can work the rehearsal schedule around one sport or other activity, but if you are already playing two sports, working part time, taking dance or piano lessons, and doing volunteer service, it’s unrealistic to think that you would have the time for the musical. All members of the company need to be very mindful of their grades while participating in Sweeney Todd School Edition. You should arrange your schedule so that you will have study time. Bring your homework to rehearsal with you. There will inevitably be some downtime or break time when you can get class work finished. You are never to use rehearsal or technical work for the musical as an excuse for not completing homework, reading, or projects in your classes. Every student involved in the musical will be required to provide a copy of each progress report and report card received during the rehearsal period to the director. If any of your grades drop below a “C” average, you will be placed on a weekly progress report until your grades improve. Failure to maintain passing grades in classes can result in dismissal from the production. 5 Thoughts About Being Cast or Not Being Cast An audition is part of the process we use to arrive at casting a production. We feel that the audition process is an important aspect to theater arts training in that it is a primary way in which an actor learns how to present him or herself. As a result of this process, whether a child is cast or not, a number of character traits are developed: hard work, discipline, commitment, and accepting disappointment. We choose to use the audition process rather than simply casting the production in order to further develop these important characteristics. Casting a show is always an extremely difficult process and those of us on the audition team agonize over these decisions, knowing that not everyone can be cast and that feelings will inevitably be hurt. There are always many more people who audition than there is room for them in any production. We can usually cast a show three times over with the abundance of talent at most musical auditions. We hope you understand that not being cast is rarely a reflection on your effort and abilities. There are many variables beyond your control that go into the casting process: conflict schedule, other people who audition, and things like voice part, height, shape, and various other elements at the core of who you are that are unchangeable. You may give the audition of your life, and the artistic team may thoroughly realize how talented you are – but you still might not “fit” who the authors had in mind when they created a given character or show. The idea of “fitting” or “not fitting” is a hard one to comprehend – especially when you are disappointed. If you are not cast this time, please know that your talent has been seen, recognized, and given fair consideration. And please, don’t be hard on yourself. Just know that while it didn’t work out this time, you are welcome to come out again to audition next time! We applaud your courage in putting yourself forward, and hope you leave proud of having accomplished a remarkable feat – opening up yourself on stage and giving us the opportunity to consider your for this show. How to Handle Disappointment Auditions bring anticipation, excitement, nervousness, and disappointment to many of those auditioning for productions. The fact of the matter is that auditions will never seem fair to everyone. With so many students auditioning for a limited number of roles, decisions are always extremely difficult for those casting the show. How one reacts to disappointment is a tremendous test of character. Although disappointment is also painful, it can bring about a new understanding of goals and what the world has in store for you. There are three ways that you can react to disappointment. One way is to give up and never try again. The second way is to say to yourself, “This is something that I really want, and I’m going to work on my skills so that the next time I audition, I will have a better chance of landing a part.” The third response could be to say, “Acting and singing aren’t really my thing. I don’t have a driving desire to be on stage, but I would like to be involved in another aspect of the show.” A Few Notes for Parents of Those Auditioning Parents, you know your son/daughter better than we do. If you don’t think that they can handle the play, other extracurricular activities, part time jobs, and keep their grades up, I have no problem with you saying that this won’t work. In fact, I’ll stand behind your decision 100%. If you anticipate problems, it is fairer to your child, as well as to the others in the cast and crew who would be affected, if you pull them out now instead of letting them get in over their heads and pull them out just before the show opens. Whether a child is cast in the show or not, or cast in the role of his/her choice, a young student needs to glean a proper perspective on the auditioning process. Explaining the concept of casting to a disappointed child is not easy, but taking healthy risks is important in the development of life-long character traits. Young performers need to be encouraged not to base their self-worth on the role they did or did not get. Encourage your child not to place blame on themselves or others. Remember, casting is a subjective decision based on what the audition team sees in the audition room on a given day. 6 Sweeney Todd School Edition KEEP THIS COPY Sunday November 15 Tentative Rehearsal Schedule as of November 5, 2015 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 16 17 18 19 Thespian Ind 30 December 29 6 Showcase Showcase 14 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 3 Band Reh 15 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 4 Drama Club Winter Break 5 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 10 11 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 17 Zombie Felties 3 12 18 8 9 10 19 24 7 2 Drama Club 20 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 27 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 3 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 26 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal Amahl 7 28 6 13 20 12:00 – 5:00 Performance 19 9:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 8 9 9:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 16 21 Band Dance 15 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 22 28 Cho/Dra Dance 29 4 5 GA ThesCon 11 GA ThesCon 12 14 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 21 Amahl 18 Exams 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 13 5 Chorus Reh Chorus Holiday 11 12 Band Concert 17 6 21 10:00 – 6:00 Auditions * 4 Exams 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal MLK Holiday 25 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal 1 31 February 16 Saturday 20 Showcase Reh Showcase Reh Showcase Reh Showcase Reh 7 8 9 10 13 January Showcase Reh Thanksgiving Break 1 2 Friday 4:00 – 9:00 Black History Rehearsal Mid-Winter Break & Inclement Weather Make Up Days 22 23 24 25 26 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 Tri-M Induction Movie Night Rehearsal Rehearsal Rehearsal 1 29 March 2 3 4 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 MIOSM Concert Rehearsal Rehearsal Rehearsal Rehearsal 7 8 9 10 11 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 4:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * Rehearsal * Rehearsal * Rehearsal * 14 15 16 17 18 4:00 – 10:00 4:00 – 10:00 4:00 – 10:00 4:00 – 10:00 4:00 – 10:00 Dress Rehearsal Dress Rehearsal Dress Rehearsal Dress Rehearsal Dress Rehearsal 21 22 23 24 25 4:00 – 10:00 4:00 – 10:00 Performance Performance 23 30 9:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 6 GA ThesCon 13 9:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 27 9:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 5 190 on the Hill 12 9:00 – 9:00 Rehearsal * 19 5:00 – 10:00 Performance 26 * REQUIRED ATTENDANCE FOR ALL CAST MEMBERS This schedule represents blocks of time in which rehearsals will take place.
