The Catholic Church has always taught that salvation is not something that we can ever achieve or earn on our own. It is always God’s gift. If we accept this, then what role do we play in our salvation? Are we just puppets, with God pulling our strings? Are we able to sit back and rest on our spiritual laurels? Do our life choices, our good works or our commitment to the Gospel make a difference? For some, this idea that has all been decided ahead of time might sound attractive. If it has, then why worry? Why be faithful, honest or just in this life? Indeed, the litany of our own personal and communal sins becomes irrelevant if we simply think that God has already decided beforehand. The Protestant notion of “salvation (or justification) by faith alone” means that through a genuine faith in Jesus Christ, His righteousness is imputed to us (God does not make us account for our sins), so that it is as if our sins were covered up so God could not see them. God does indeed forgive sins for which we repent, but this notion both adds something and leaves something out. To the words of St. Paul “justified by faith,” it adds the word “alone”, which then causes proponents of the notion to leave out the reality that salvation or justification is not a singular act, but a process. Salvation comes from being made righteous, from being made “just”, from being made true saints, not just from wearing the Halloween costume of a saint. Saint Paul doesn’t stop with telling us that we have been justified, he goes on to say that we now have hope and access to God’s grace. Because we have been justified, we can boast in hope of God’s glory because the love of God has been “poured out into our hearts”, and makes us capable of more than just blind obedience or the bare minimum. In other words, Paul tells us that God is on our side revealing his mercy and forgiveness that pours forth like living water – purifying, cleansing and renewing the heart that desires life with him. That process begins with initial justification at baptism, it continues with the progressing justification of our constant striving to do God’s will in our lives, and ends with the final judgment or permanent justification. We tend to have a “courtroom” view of the final judgment, which is understandable given the word “judgment”. But the reality is that it will be the moment when we will be faced with the choices we have made throughout our lives and will see if we have chosen God or ourselves at each instance. The view of God as a strict judge (or even a lenient one) that condemns or rewards ought to give way to a right understanding of God as a Father that respects our choices (whether for Him or against Him and for ourselves) because what He desires is love, which cannot be forced. God wants us to choose Him. He Who is Love desires our love. This is why He gave us free will, and why He does not prevent us from choosing badly. Paradoxically, then, the possibility of evil exists because the reality of love exists. Whether we spend eternity in isolation, separated from God, from Love, form everyone else, or we rejoice forever in communion with God and His saints in unending bliss or (in honor of St. Patrick’s day and the Irish) “craic” (pronounced “crack”, ask an Irish person what it means). Lent invites us to seek God’s mercy. And just as we seek God, we come to know that God is also seeking us, taking the initiative so that we each might lead lives that are justified by him. This offer of living water is given to us today; let us drink freely of this life-giving and refreshing gift. Yours in Christ Jesus, Fr. Marco EVENING OF RECOLLECTION Join us at Our Lady of the Wayside in Chaptico, MD for an evening of recollection. The men’s evening will be on March 22nd. 6:15pm will be exposition of the blessed sacrament and meditation, with confession at 7pm, and benediction at 8pm. PERPETUAL ADORATION Did you know our very own Immaculate Heart of Mary offers you the opportunity to participate in Perpetual Adoration? Some may ask “What is Perpetual Adoration?” Perpetual Adoration is a Eucharistic devotion whereby members unite in the adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament with the goal of adoring The Blessed Sacrament perpetually (24 hours a day). Many people have signed up for one hour only to find out that time flies and one hour is not long enough, so they are there longer. If you are interested, please call our adoration coordinator, Jeff Harmon, at 240-538-5017 or email [email protected] for more information. Dear IHM Family, Great News!
