The University of Massachusetts Lowell Distinguished Alumni Award was
established to acknowledge professional and public service contributions of
university alumni. The Alumni Relations Council Board of Directors annually selects
an individual who has made a significant contribution to a field of knowledge or
who has provided exemplary service to the public.
LORENZO CABRERA ’94
Lorenzo Cabrera ’94 is the founder
and chairman of the board of Cabrera
Services Inc., an award-winning
company headquartered in East
Hartford, Conn., with offices across the
country. Cabrera Services specializes
in radiological and environmental
remediation, health physics,
environmental remediation, radioactive
and mixed waste management, and
depleted uranium munitions response.
Mr. Cabrera founded the company
to fill a void in the radiological
services market. Over the past two
decades, Cabrera Services has grown
tremendously as a small Hispanicowned radiological services company.
He was the 2002 recipient of the Francis
Cabot Lowell Young Alumni Award
for Sciences and was later named to
the university’s Circle of Honor for

LeVar Burton has been capturing the
attention of audiences and industry
peers for four decades. Whether acting,
directing, producing or writing, Mr.
Burton has demonstrated that he can
do it all.
But it has been his role as host and
executive producer of the PBS children’s
series “Reading Rainbow” that he is
most proud of. Airing from 1983 to
2009, it was one of the longest-running
children’s television shows, earning over
200 awards, including multiple Emmys
and a Peabody.

storytelling, in 2012 Mr. Burton
launched RRKidz, a digital educational
publishing company, with business
partner Mark Wolfe. The all-new
Reading Rainbow is a digital reading
service with over 500 children’s books
and video field trips. It is the numberone educational app on iTunes and the
recipient of numerous awards.
Most recently, Mr. Burton turned to
Kickstarter to bring Reading Rainbow
to “Every Child, Everywhere” —
especially to classrooms in need. The
campaign raised $1 million in less than
11 hours. As a result, RRKidz will
introduce Reading Rainbow EDU this
year, with learning content for teachers
and students. In October 2014, Reading Rainbow
published Mr. Burton’s first children’s
book, “The Rhino Who Swallowed A
Storm,” an uplifting story that helps
children cope with the difficulties of
everyday life.
