- Winchester Live at Home Scheme

Issue 56: June/July/August/September 2015
Scheme News
As always its been a busy few months at WLAHS - in February we had our first
outing of the year to The White Rabbit at Lyndhurst for a Valentine’s Lunch and in
March we had our AGM which was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Winchester.
In May we held a Saturday afternoon Tea Dance which was facilitated by JAMS!
dance group and our Members enjoyed it so much that we are doing it all again in
June. We are looking forward to our Annual Holiday in July, this year we are taking
23 Members to Cricket St Thomas for a 4-night stay, fingers crossed we will be
blessed with good weather again.
We have had a number of interesting speakers at Lunch Club over the last few
months including a demonstration from an at home beauty therapist who treated
some our Members to a short massage and we met some lovely owls who came to
visit us from the owl rescue charity Soft Landings. We are making some changes to
our Friday’s alternate clubs (Craft Club & Kurling) this will now be an Activity Day
which will include Crafts, Kurling, a table-tennis session and a Film Club—full
details are included in our June/July Activity sheet and details on the Film Club can
be found on page 3 of this Newsletter.
Fundraising events this year have gone very well with our Swimathon team raising
over £1000 in Sponsorship in February, our Annual Quiz in April, attended by over
100 people, raising over £1000 and two runners (Rob Bentley & Pete Grant) who
took part in the London Marathon and Southampton Half Marathon raised over
£1800 between them. Upcoming fundraisers include a June BBQ, a Covert Sale in
August and a Skittles evening in September - see page4 for more information.

Staying Cool in the Summer
Tips to keep you cool when its very hot
We all look forward to ‘a good summer’, even though we’re quite often
disappointed! But very high temperatures and humidity can present a risk to health,
and older people can be particularly susceptible to heat-related illness. It’s
important not to get caught out during unseasonably warm weather too. Keep out
of the heat. Don’t spend long periods sitting or working outside during the hottest
time of the day: late morning to mid-afternoon. If you do go out, wear a hat and stay
in the shade as much as possible.

If you’re travelling by car or public transport always take a bottle of water.

Avoid strenuous activity, and limit activities like housework and gardening to
the early morning or evening when it’s cooler.

Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun. Remember that
lights generate heat.

Keep windows shut while it’s cooler inside than out and open them when it
gets hotter inside. If it’s safe, you could leave a window open at night when it’s
cooler.

Splash your face with cool (not very cold) water, or place a damp cloth or scarf
on the back of your neck to help you cool off.

Drink lots of fluid – even if you aren’t thirsty. If you usually rely on drinks with
caffeine in them, such as tea, coffee or cola, limit these and have water first or
instead. Avoid alcohol as it can make dehydration worse.

Eat normally – even if you aren’t hungry, you need a normal diet to replace salt
losses from sweating. In addition, try to have more cold foods, particularly
salads and fruit, as these contain a lot of water

Sudoku
The objective is to fill the grid with the numbers 1 to 9 so that each column, each
row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid contains all of the
digits from 1 to 9. This is a logic puzzle so guessing wont help!
