Dr. Seuss in Tiger Town! “Oh the Places You’ll Go” Dr. Seuss stepped off the bus, grabbed his bags, and started smiling upon seeing he was in Tiger Town. He loved Bowman Field, Tillman Hall and thought “This is a paradise that I have found!” President Barker and the Tiger Cub greeted him with a big high five, Knowing it was Friday they gave him an orange shirt to show his Clemson pride. They went to lunch at Pot Belly Deli and ordered their favorite meal. They talked about their weekend plans and Dr. Seuss thought, “This can’t be real!” So many things we will get to see all in one weekend with a special tour from President Barker. Women’s Soccer “As a student-athlete, it is very important to represent yourself, your team, and your school in respectful way. The biggest thing a Clemson Tiger has is heart and passion, not only for your sport but for the “family” you are surrounded by. Among all great characteristics that a Clemson Tiger has, the best part of being a student-athlete here is that there is a huge sense of unity. Whether it is by your teammates, coaches, other athletes or the community, you know that you will always be backed up by a great supporting Clemson family.” Marissa Kump Rowing “Being a Tiger means the world to me. I am so proud to wear purple and orange as I compete with my team to victory! Clemson not only has outstanding athletics, but it is also a place with fantastic academics. Being a Tiger makes me fight even harder in competition and academics. If you help each other out and depend on others, you are sure to succeed! After seeing the soccer players win against UNC at the Historic Riggs Field, Dr. Seuss stormed the field and rushed over to where the players kneeled. He heard the team talking about that final goal to make the tie-breaking win, Their captain exclaiming how much of a difference their fans’ screaming had been. Just like in “Horton Hears a Who” when the whole town must come together to make a large enough sound, The spirit squad and bleacher- filled fans, cheered so loudly they helped the players through another ACC round President Barker gathered all the players together after the game to be introduced He said, “Who better to write a book about Clemson, who better than Dr. Seuss?” What is the name of the mayor’s son in Horton Hears a Who? They then hopped on the CAT bus and toured around campus on this sunny Friday afternoon, President Barker suggested they go inside and check out the study rooms. He heard the kids talking about how nervous they were about what a hard test this will be. One even talked about cheating on the test so that she wouldn’t get a C. An older student quickly reminded her that this idea was up to no good. He said “you know you shouldn’t” and she nodded her head because she understood. Just like in “Cat in the Hat” when the children knew the cat’s games were up to no good, Dr Seuss said “I am thoroughly impressed by your athlete’s attitude and always doing what THEY know should.” What are the names of the children in The Cat in the Hat? I am from Manchester in England, so I am living a long way from home but love it in America. In my spare time I enjoy playing lots of different sports and also really enjoy reading! Another book that I enjoyed reading when I was younger was BFG by Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl was from England and was a soldier in World War 2 so I have a lot of respect for him. His book BFG stands for Big Friendly Giant and is about a really mean and scary looking giant who is actually really nice, helpful and pleasant to everyone. The message behind the story is fantastic as it shows us that you can’t always judge something just by the way it looks. If a big, angry and mean looking giant can be nice then I am sure if you have a teacher who seems a bit scary, they can be a nice person too! What was the last book you read? Reading really helps me to learn about the world around me and understand more about myself and other people. It also helps me have fun as I really enjoy the story-lines of books. What was your favorite book growing up? My favorite series of books are the Harry Potter books – I find them so entertaining!! I think my favorite character is Harry because he is so brave. His bravery and strength really show how when you believe in something and are super courageous then you can do almost anything in the world. You don’t always need a wand to do something amazing!! You have brains in your head. you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Albert Einstein Lisa Girard Women’s Track and Field Landscape Architecture is the design of outdoor public areas, landmarks, and structures to achieve environmental, social-behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes “Landscape architecture is the blend of science and art to create awesome outdoor spaces! I want to design resorts or theme parks such as Disney Land.” Landscape architects work with designers, architects, engineers, real estate agents, contractors, planners, and developers It is important to not only think of yourself, but to be thankful to everyone around you and what they do for you! Your parents, teachers, coaches and friends all help you in some way to achieve your goals. Now off to the dining hall for dinner to see what and where the students get to eat, Dr. Seuss hoped for a big plate of mashed potatoes, corn and a juicy piece of meat. Once inside, the mascot and President Barker headed straight over to the line for exotic foods, Dr. Seuss cringed and thought, “I don’t want anything weird or spicy, especially that pot with something stewed.” They reassured him that trying new things is good and part of growing up, It also reminds you to be thankful for what you have Just like in “Green Eggs and Ham” when Sam kept offering up his odd little breakfast to his friend, We must learn to try new things and be thankful for options because it might be our favorite in the end. Who is the main character in Green Eggs and Ham? How do you show gratitude on and off the golf course? Ashlan Ramsey Women’s Golf With any college sport, you are always in the spotlight and being looked up to by others. I feel that it’s important to really set a good example and be a role model so that kids who look up to you have a positive view of the game that you play. In golf, it’s very important to motivate and push the younger generations to stick with it so that the game develops in future years. I looked up to many players growing up so I hope to give back by inspiring others. In 1960, Bennett Cerf, Seuss’ editor, bet Seuss he couldn’t write a book using only 50 words. The resulting story was ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ which uses exactly 50 words. At his inaugural address in April 2000, he said: “I am convinced that there is no university in America stronger than Clemson when we are ‘One Clemson.’ A united Clemson is unstoppable.”” Quote from clemson.edu After the Tigers went up 27-7 in the third quarter against Furman in September of 2012, the Clemson mascot did the traditional pushups to mark the score. A T.I.G.E.R! always wants to learn more so that they can prepare themselves for the future! They walked across Library Bridge and saw tons of students going in and out, The library was filled with people studying for things he knew nothing about. There were students studying to be special doctors and others to be environmental engineers, Others were painting beautiful murals and still others speaking languages ever so clear. They came up to Vickery Hall, which is where the student athletes study and work, President Barker showed him how blessed the athletes were with Vickery being an extra perk! When he asked to see their papers and projects, everyone had so much they wanted to show, And Dr Seuss thought to himself as the students presented their work, “Oh the places you will go” What type of landform does Dr. Seuss say you can climb? What is your favorite subject and why? Kelly Gramlich Women’s Basketball My favorite subject to learn about is History. I enjoy reading and learning about the past! “Oh The Places You’ll Go” is the final Seuss book published before he passed away. Hardest part of being a professional athlete: All of the work that goes into preparing and delivering night-in and night-out. Did you ever think you would be a professional athlete or was this the goal all along? Definitely was a goal but as time progressed I didn’t think it would actually come to fruition but the right opportunities presented themselves and after praying about it, I chose to pursue it. What advice would you give kids who want to go pro in their sport: To work hard and know that your life outside of sport is just as important as your life in it. Alexa Rand Volleyball Current Location: Sweden Best part of being a professional athlete: I get to play the sport that I love almost every single day and get paid to do so. I don’t have to worry about the stress of school and homework either. My job is to play volleyball, travel around Europe, and to stay in shape. Since flying to Europe to become a professional athlete, I have played volleyball in Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Denmark, and Austria. Hardest part of being a professional athlete: The hardest part of being a professional athlete in a different country is the language barrier and being so far away from my family and friends. The 6 hour time difference between Sweden and Ohio and South Carolina is not ideal either. I live with two girls from Poland (one speaks English while the other one doesn’t), my head coach is Polish, and the rest of my teammates are Swedish. Did you ever think you would be a professional athlete or was this the goal all along? I always knew I would play volleyball in college, but I don’t think that I ever thought I would be a professional athlete. It wasn’t until late in my senior year at Clemson that I thought about making this a goal of mine. Now that I am a professional athlete in Sweden, I am so glad that I decided to take on this challenging experience. Brianna Rollins Track and Field Best part of being a professional athlete: The best part of being a professional track and field athlete is traveling across the world competing, meeting new people, and experiencing new cultures. Did you ever think you would be a professional athlete or was this the goal all along? I’ve always imagined being a professional track and field athlete since I started running in high school. It’s something that I enjoy doing and why not make my “job/career” something I look forward to doing each and everyday I wake up in the morning. What advice would you give kids who want to go pro in their sport: My advice to kids that are considering going pro is to stay dedicated to the sport no matter what happens because some things may not go as planned and it could become discouraging but you must always continue to push on. Do all the necessary things you need to do for your body to stay healthy; that can consist of getting treatment, ice tube, eating healthy, and get good rest every single day. Becoming a professional athlete isn’t the easiest thing to do but if you commit yourself to your sport, stay focused, stay motivated, stay hungry. Brianna won The Bowerman award in 2013 which is the highest and most prestigious award in Track and Field Natalie Anthony Track and Field Future Bank of America Employee What are you most looking forward to working at Bank of America? I am most looking forward to all of the new opportunities that are going to be available to me. I’m excited to start something new in a brand new city. How has athletics helped you in college and how will it help you in your career? College athletics has really taught me to work as a team. In finance, teams are crucial to accomplishing projects and meeting deadlines. I’m lucky to have been on an incredible team these past four years at Clemson and I know that sense of teamwork will help me for my future career. Brianna is the American Record Holder in the 100m Hurdles! Respect is the final T.I.G.E.R! quality, because it is very important to treat each other fairly! President Barker brought him to Bowman field to see the great big oak trees He said “look how big and tall and to think they all started as small seeds.” That is why it is so important to recycle and never litter Because how can we expect the world to be better if we become bitter? Dr Seuss reminded President Barker of the Lorax and his Truffula trees “We must respect the environment because they provide things that we need.” Trees give us shade for our picnics and air to breathe And if you have a good bookthey’re a great place to read. Protecting a beautiful place like Clemson shouldn’t be hard to do It is filled with caring people, people just like me and you. What type of trees grow where the Lorax lives? Dr. Seuss agreed and said that it wouldn’t be in future editions. Dr Seuss packed up his bags and thanked President Barker for his tour He said he had never scene such beautiful and spirited place ever before! He took his seat on the bus and while reminiscing, began to smile Thinking to himself he hadn’t been this excited for a book in awhile. He thought about the cheers of the fans who were just like the Who’s. He remembered the gratitude he had after eating such good food. He could never forget the respect the community had for their beloved trees He thought about how hard the students studied for academic victories.
