By Michael Sandy Going Electronic
The newsletter can now be found on our website (www.
naturesanctuary.com). Simply scroll down on the home page and
click on the newsletter pdf on the left. We will send out an e-mail
and notice on Facebook when each new newsletter is published.
If you would like to get the e-mails, make sure you send us your
e-mail address when you renew your membership. Please include
your name, address, phone number and e-mail address in your
request so we can keep our records current. Our present plan is
to publish all newsletters electronically and mail out the fourth
quarter newsletter. This will allow the Nature Sanctuary to save
thousands of dollars each year, a very important option with the
rising cost of living.
The Nature Sanctuary is now using Facebook with a Martha
Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary site and a Martha Lafite
Thompson Nature Sanctuary EGADS Camp site to communicate with the public. Programs and events will be listed on the
Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary Facebook site and
anyone who has “liked” us will automatically receive an e-mail.
The EGADS Camp site will keep the families of the campers
up-to-date with what’s going on in camp. If you do not have a
Facebook site, check our website regularly for updates. Anyone
with a membership may request to be on our e-mail list.
Thank you all for participating at the Nature Sanctuary – I hope
you enjoy it as much as the staff and I do. Please call or come by
and spend a little time with us during the Holiday seasons!

Species Spotlight
By Collin Edwards
Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea)
As the colors of the leaves change and fall begins to settle in,
migratory birds take flight. Neotropical birds that spent the summer mating in North America head back to habitats in Central
and South America. The time of fall migration presents the last
chance of the year to spot such birds, including the stunning
Scarlet Tanager.
The Scarlet Tanager is aptly named for the brilliant red color
of the males. In stark contrast to the males, females are an olive
color. This species is a medium-sized songbird in the cardinal
family. Its call consists of a unique and repeating chick-burr
sound. While in North America, this species inhabits deciduous or deciduous-coniferous forests from southeastern Canada
through much of the eastern United States, including Missouri.
As a migrant species, the Scarlet Tanager can be seen in Missouri
as early as the middle of March. Once the bird has arrived, it nests
and mates, producing broods of 3-5 offspring. The light blue eggs
of the Scarlet Tanager incubate in the nest for 11-14 days until
they hatch. The young leave the nest 9-12 days after hatching.
The Scarlet Tanager forages high in the canopy of tall trees. It
eats mostly flying insects, including grasshoppers, cicadas and
moths. When insect populations dwindle, the Scarlet Tanager
may eat chokeberries, raspberries, mulberries and other fruits.
Now that fall has arrived, the Scarlet Tanager has begun to migrate
south for the winter, heading to the tropical forests of Colombia,
Ecuador and Peru.
In terms of conservation
status, Scarlet Tanager populations are currently stable,
but they have been experiencing declines due to
loss and fragmentation of habitat. Loss of interior forest habitat has left the Scarlet
Tanager vulnerable to brood parasitism (in which a parasite
bird lays its eggs in the nest of another bird) by Brown-headed
Cowbirds. Another significant threat is nest predation by jays,
snakes, squirrels and other predators. Collision with cellphone
towers and other man-made structures is a problem as well.
The Scarlet Tanager is a rather rare birding sight, although it is
not particularly uncommon in many forests. Spotting this bird is
complicated by the fact that it inhabits the upper-most portion of
the canopy and is frequently obscured by dense summer foliage.
Additionally, it is very similar in appearance to its relative the
Summer Tanager, but the Summer Tanager can be distinguished
by its less vibrant, uniform red color and overall larger size as
compared to the Scarlet Tanager. With some patience and a set of
keen ears, bird watchers can hone in on the location of this bird
in large shade trees by listening for its call. A sighting is worth
the extra effort as it truly is a magnificent bird. This summer both
tanager species were seen nesting in the Nature Sanctuary.
Just for Kids – Let it snow!
Figure 1
The weather has turned cooler, fall has begun, and kids of all ages will soon start to dream of playing in the snow. To tide you over until then, try your hand at making these fun paper snowflakes
(and get a grownup to help you with the scissors).
Start with a square piece of paper (you can cut 2 ½ inches from the bottom of an 8 ½ by 11 inch
paper to make it square).
Next, fold the upper left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner to make a triangle, and
then fold the triangle in half, ending up as shown in figure 1.
Next, fold the left hand corner down diagonally to the right, until the left edge runs straight
down the middle from the top point, then fold the right hand corner to the left so that it overlaps
the left hand side, ending up as figure 2.
Finally, turn the paper over and cut across the bottom edge of the triangle, as shown in figure 3.
Figure 2
Figure 3
Figure 4
Figure 5
Now you are ready to cut a pattern in the
triangle, by cutting away the dark areas shown
in figure 4.
Carefully unfold your paper to reveal figure
5, your beautiful snowflake!
See the website below for more fun patterns,
or use your imagination to create your own
unique version.
