Welcome
Welcome to our latest course brochure
People take part in adult learning for many different reasons - to learn a new skill, to find a
new interest, to meet new people, to get into work or to gain a qualification.
Dudley’s Adult and Community Learning (ACL) service offers a range of part-time courses
and workshops.
We run courses for both adults and families and offer courses for different levels of learning.
Courses are held across the borough in neighbourhood learning centres, libraries, schools
and other community venues during the daytime, evenings or weekends.
Please take a few moments to look through our courses - each listing includes details of
when and where the course is held and the cost of the course. For more information about
individual courses contact the centre where the course is being held.
You will find details about how to enrol on a course on the next page. Information about fees
and concessions can be found at the back of this brochure.
We also offer an information, advice and guidance interview to help you choose the right
course for you and to tell you about other learning and training opportunities. Please see
details at the back of this brochure.

It’s possible to join some courses that have already started - please check with the centre
where the course is held. A full list of venues is on page 5.

Payment is by cash or cheque. Debit cards are accepted in some centres - please check
the payment arrangements at your centre.

Computers
Computers and digital devices now play a major role in our daily lives and we are being encouraged to
access services on line. For many people this has included on-line shopping and social media. People
are now accessing more and more services on line, such as on-line banking. It is proposed that in the
future some services will only be available on line – this is known as ‘digital by default’.
Our courses are designed for absolute beginners to more advanced users. If you have never used a
computer before we can get you started, including how to use the Internet and e-mail.
We can also help you to make better use of your mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, or
get started on social media.
Computer classes include - Computers for beginners, Computers - intermediate, Smart phones,
tablets and other mobile devices, Introduction to Facebook, Webpage design, Getting started with the
Internet and e-mail.

Healthy living
As well as offering a variety of exercise and fitness classes, our healthy living programme also includes
cooking and healthy eating, health and beauty, and well-being classes such as anxiety management.
Health and fitness
We all know how important health and fitness is to our well-being and ability to deal with the strains
and stresses of everyday life. Taking part in regular exercise also helps to maintain a healthy weight.
Finding an exercise programme you enjoy and sticking to it can be difficult. Our courses can help to
keep you on track by providing the structure, motivation and support needed to achieve your goals.
Courses are available for people of all levels and abilities. There are also specific courses with the older
learner in mind and those who have specialist needs such as recovering from or living with an illness
that may make keeping up with mainstream classes difficult.
Courses include Aerobics, Gentle Exercise, Keep-fit, Swimming, Pilates and Yoga.
Health and beauty
Classes include health and beauty, nail art and hairdressing. If you have creative flair, style and a
genuine desire to help people look and feel their best, then you might want to consider a course in
health and beauty.
Health and well-being
Classes include aromatherapy, health and self awareness, meditation, relaxation, behaviour
management, anxiety management, counselling, confidence building and life coaching.
Health and food
Classes include: cookery, cake decorating, sugar craft, cooking on a budget, festive food and drink,
healthy cooking and food for fellas. If you’re looking to start a new hobby or develop your skills in
baking, cake decorating or cooking, then we have the course for you.
For more information contact Kathy Glazzard on 01384 816496
My name is Kelly and I am 33. I saw a taster
course for Nail Art and went along to join in with
my sister for a bit of fun. I never thought it would
lead to anything but I enjoyed it very much. So
I enrolled on a level 2 Nail Technology course at
one of the neighbourhood learning centres. I found
some aspects of it challenging but very rewarding. It
gave me a new focus and has helped me to recover
from illness. I passed the course with 100% and
a distinction. I am so happy that I have gained a
qualification and a new interest.

My name is Terence and my hobby is photographing
travelling circuses. I am a member of the Circus
Friends Association and take photographs for them
to use in their promotional materials. I enrolled on a
photography course and learnt some new skills and
techniques that have improved my photographs. I would
recommend an adult learning course to anyone, I have
even learnt how to set up a website for my photography.
I have now become a volunteer photographer for the
adult learning team and have photographed some of their
events and celebrations.

Performing arts
The performing arts include dance, music, drama and creative writing .
Dance
We offer dance classes for complete beginners and for those who want to improve their moves.
Latin American classes teach a variety of dances including the Salsa, Rumba, Samba, Pasadoble,
Cha Cha Cha, Jive and the Charleston. These classes are a great way to improve your fitness.
Our popular Tribal Fusion Belly Dance is a modern form that blends many styles. It incorporates
elements from Popping, Hip Hop, Breakdance, Egyptian or Cabaret Belly Dance as well as traditional
forms such as the Flamenco and Folk Lore Dance styles.
Other styles include Tap Dancing and Street Dance which includes Hip Hop, Jazz and Rhythm and
Blues. These classes are a lot of fun and a great way to improve your fitness.
Music
If you want to play a musical instrument we have both beginners and improvers classes in guitars and
keyboards. We can also offer classes in ukulele and choral singing.
Drama
In our popular drama classes you will explore stage craft, mime, mask work, puppetry, movie making
and even develop your own memorable characters. Or maybe you want to embrace the plays of
William Shakesphere?
Research says that drama and drama games help to improve self-confidence and communication
skills. Drama can also help you to develop a greater connection with feelings and emotions in a safe
and supportive space.
Most of all it makes you feel young again by providing lots of laughter and heaps of fun along a
magical learning journey.
Creative writing
Creative writing is used in fiction and poetry. Its purpose is to be able to express feelings, thoughts and
emotions in written pieces of work. You can join these classes as a complete beginner and learn how
to write creatively. Some of our learners have progressed to publishing their own work.

Angela came to one of our neighbourhood learning centres
to learn how to use a computer. Since then she has found
the confidence to enrol on classes that have helped to
improve her English and maths. Angela said,
“Learning has enabled me to gain new skills and I have
gone on to courses for book-keeping and first-aid. I feel
much better, have gained qualifications and have more
confidence to find a job”.
Angela is now working as a volunteer and is seeking
employment as a receptionist.

Family learning
Family learning helps parents and carers and other family members to understand what their children
are learning and how best to support them. It’s also a great way to spend quality time with your
children and try something new.
If you have trouble understanding what your child is learning in school or would like to be able to help
with your child’s homework then our Keeping Up with the Children short courses in maths and English
may help.
Family Learning also provides the opportunity to work towards a qualification in maths or English if you
haven’t already got a GCSE or Level 2 qualification.
Family Learning courses are offered in community venues or schools and children’s centres throughout
the year.
Family School Holiday workshop activities - have fun and learn together, get ideas for home activities.

Chris was keen to use the skills she had learnt on a Family
Learning course in phonics to support her grandchildren’s
learning at home. Since then Chris has gained a qualification
in maths and will work towards one in English starting in
September.
Chris said, “I have really enjoyed the courses and learnt a
lot. I can help my grandchildren with their school work and
I understand what they are working on in school. I have
made good friends with other members of the class and will
continue to learn”.
Chris was nominated for a national Adult Learners Week award
by her tutor for her outstanding achievement in Family Learning.
