Early life and adulthood
-Born in February 1889 in Mansfield Virginia
-Moved to suburban Chicago when he was 9
-Published an article in a newspaper about Mars… at age 12.
-Very athletic
-In high school set the 1906 track high jump world record for Illinois.
-Went to UChicago and studied at Oxford. Received Law degree in 1912.
Professional life
-Ran a small business firm in Louisville, Kentucky. Also taught at a local school.
-In 1914 he returned to UChicago for postgrad and started research at the
Yerkes Observatory.
-In 1917 he finished his Doctorate and enlisted in the U.S. army.
-After WWI he accepted a research position at the Wilson Observatory. Began
studying nebulae.

THE DISCOVERY
-Henrietta Leavitt work on Cepheid pulsing stars allowed for the measurement
of distances in space from Earth. She discovered that the Large and Small
Magellanic clouds were outside of the Milky Way.
-Edwin helped Harlow Shapley in measuring the Milky Way. Shapley, among
many astronomers, thought that the entirety of the universe was contained in
the Milky Way.
-He used the Wilson Observatory telescope to find 12 Cepheid stars within one
year. He concluded that the Andromeda was 900,000 light years away from the
Milky Way.
ANOTHER DISCOVERY
-In 1929, Hubble discovered that all of the
galaxies he observed were shifted red.
-This can only mean one thing...
