South Africa is renowned for its extreme climate conditions. In vast areas, such as the Kalahari Desert and
part of the Karoo, the climate and ecosystems are quite similar to those of
the Middle East.
The unfavourable conditions in South
Africa and merciless natural selection
did, however, result in well adapted
indigenous stock breeds. South Africa has the indigenous cattle breeds
such as the Afrikaner and Nguni and
later the Bonsmara, sheep breeds such
as Persian Sheep, Namaqua Sheep,
Afrikaner Sheep and Damara Sheep.
Indigenous goat breeds, such as the
striking Red Headed Boer Goats,White
Savannah Goats as well as the Kalahari
Reds, adapted well to the harsh conditions of South Africa.
For many generations South African
Breeders bred animals to survive in the
demanding conditions of South Africa.

Kalahari Reds as well as many South
African Game and Cattle species, have
been developed in South Africa. For
obvious reasons, most of these species

The Persian sheep in South Africa
originated from the arid regions of
East Africa. The initial Persian Stock
was introduced through a small group
of sheep of a ship wrecked off the East
Coast in 1869. Somalian traders later
also introduced Persian Sheep along
the Eastern Coast of South Africa. The
Persian Sheep adapted well to the
South African conditions and by sound
breeding practices and strict selections the South African Persian breed
developed into the best genetic material in the world.

Persian Stud exhibited at the South African National Persian Show in March
2015 and amongst others, Chandelier’s
Red Speckled ram, called Champ, was
crowned as the National Grand Champion Red Speckled Ram. Champ and
Queen, one of Chandelier’s top Red
Speckled ewes, were also crowned as
the Champion Ram and Ewe Group (inter-race). Both of these animals have
been exported to a client in the UAE,
Champ for the World Record price of
US$ 13 000.00.
The South African Boer Goat, SA Savannah and SA Kalahari Reds are bred
in South Africa under harsh conditions
to adapt and survive under almost any
environment. For almost 60 years these
goats have been selected from indigenous goats for adaptability, fertility and
good mothering traits. The aim was to
have a hardy, very adaptable meat goat
that could survive the extreme conditions of the African landscape while
still maintaining a high birth rate, high
survival rate and a profitable meat
carcass with outstanding health characteristics. In a relatively short period
of time, the Boer Goat has developed
into the most favoured meat goat in the
world, producing a low calorie, heart
friendly meat.
The Kalahari Reds are fully pigmented and can thus handle the extreme
summer heat of South Africa and the
Middle East, very well. DNA tests conducted found a great divide between
the Kalahari Reds and other South Af-

rican Goat breeds. With regards to the
adaptability, fertility and high meat
yield, Kalahari Reds are quite similar
to SA Boer Goats.
The colour of the Kalahari Reds is
dominant and refers to the colour of
the sand in the Kalahari Desert of South
Africa and Botswana. The red/brown
colour of the Kalahari Reds is very suitable for cross breeding programs to
improve the colour of the indigenous
goats. In the meantime breeders also
