Affordable information and entertainment from a reliable source.
TV worth watching.
Tailwind 300 specifications.
A TV system is only as good as the programming it provides.
That’s why Rockwell Collins has teamed with DIRECTV – the No. 1
digital satellite entertainment service provider in the United
States. DIRECTV provides one of the largest offerings available,
delivering a truly informative, enjoyable and rewarding
programming experience. You’ll be able to switch back and forth
between CNN, Fox News, Bloomberg, MSNBC, ESPN, Golf Channel,
premium sports subscriptions, The Weather Channel, local
networks, independent programming, Disney and other children
and family programs, premium and pay-per-view movies, over
60 music channels, and a host of other channels. It’s the very best
information and entertainment content available, and Rockwell
Collins can deliver it – live – to your aircraft cabin.
Connect to virtually any cabin management system using
industry-standard interfaces. Command and control interfaces on
the Rockwell Collins Tailwind 300 system use the standard RS-485
bus, and video output utilizes NTSC format.
Greater capabilities through innovation.
In today’s busy world you can’t afford to be disconnected. Wherever you fly, you want
to stay informed and entertained. You want diverse programming options and reliable
reception. Just like you have in your home.
With Rockwell Collins’ Tailwind® 300, you get low-cost live television in one of the lightest
weight, smallest systems in the air. With five generations of satellite TV systems flying on
dozens of different aircraft types, we bring unparalleled industry expertise to you. And with
the passenger experience and reliability you’ve come to expect from a most trusted source –
Rockwell Collins.
Tailwind 300 is backed by our world-class customer service and support, with the reputation
for on-time delivery and ability to improve product maintainability.
Wherever you fly in the contiguous U.S., Tailwind 300 delivers the world into your cabin
– affordably.
Passenger convenience.
Building a system that is small, lightweight and capable of flying at high altitudes and at
speeds over 500 mph is no small task. Atmospheric changes, background radiation, solar
flares, takeoff and landing obstacles, and third-party systems already installed inside your
cabin can interfere with reception.
Our Tailwind 300 system transforms this highly complex communications challenge into a
reliable, convenient viewing experience for you. We overcome these challenges through a
unique combination of digital electronics, computer-based functionality, RF technology and
advanced software. With satellite systems certified on more than 200 aircraft worldwide,
you can count on us to deliver a reliable system that provides you with consistent,
push-button ease.
Tailwind 300, as part of our state-of-the-art Tailwind family,
demonstrates an integral part of Rockwell Collins’ dedication to
making your cabin work. Our reliable system is a result of our
advanced engineering expertise, extensive testing and
improvement, and successful in-air operation.
Capturing a Digital Broadcast Satellite (DBS) signal starts with the
smallest and most efficient antenna possible. The dish itself
(without a radome cover) is just 11.5 inches in diameter, or
37 percent smaller than average at-home dishes. As a result,
impact on your aircraft’s profile is minimized.
If there’s a TV satellite signal amid the interference, you can count
on the Rockwell Collins Tailwind 300 system to find it – and
transmit it to you in full vibrancy.
Technology you can rely on. Service you can trust.
Rockwell Collins Tailwind 300 is one of the most advanced and
reliable systems for the contiguous U.S. But the technology is
only part of the equation. Leveraging the expertise gained by our
engineers, Tailwind 300 system users are assured of our industry
leading support wherever they fly. Rockwell Collins’ customers can
rely on a broad network of dealers and service centers strategically
located for your convenience. These centers, and the dedicated
professionals who staff them, provide a level of service and
expertise that keep customers of Rockwell Collins among the
most thoroughly satisfied in the industry.

The Tail Mounted Unit (TMU) mounts on the tail and receives
TV signals utilizing LHCP or RHCP circular polarization – even
at high velocities and at all flyable altitudes.
2
The antenna aligns with an orbiting satellite by acquiring
position and altitude information from the connected third
party Inertial Reference System (IRS) through the Antenna
Control Unit (ACU).
3
After signal acquisitions, the information is processed and
translated into Intermediate Frequency (IF) signals.
4
Decoded signals then travel to the IF Multiplexer Unit (IMU),
which manages up to four Receiver Decoder Units (RDUs).
Each RDU has two built-in outputs.
5
From the RDU, the signal travels through the aircraft’s
audio-video system and is ready for cabin broadcast. Viewers
can watch programming from up to eight separate TV outputs,
allowing access to over 130 channels; controlled from a
touch-screen infrared or RF remote.
