This graphic novel includes three CDs with Gallagher’s studio and live versions, plus actor Aidan Quinn reading the tale. Cool stuff. – MD Rondo Hatton Destination...Fun! Surf from Louisiana? Why not! Guitarman Bruce Lamb leads his band through an alloriginal lineup of surf stomps, noir rockers, Latin ballads, spaghetti western themes, and big band jazzers. The sound is classic, reverbdrenched guitar on timeless instrumentals. – MD The Jon Herington Band Live This DVD features Herington with his trio playing blues, rock, and everything in between. He’s a great player who is comfortable in all genres. David Bromberg joins the band for an impromptu version of the blues “Tongue,” and it’s obvious from the musicians’ reactions they’re having as much fun playing as you are watching. – JH Berry, Carl Perkins, and their own “I Saw Her Standing There,” among others, snarl with rebellious energy. – MD Carl Filipiak and the Jimi Jazz Band Live at the Cat’s Eye The stated purpose of Filipiak’s band here was to combine rock and roll, R&B, and jazz using elements pioneered by Jimi Hendrix. This allows Filipiak and sax man Paul Hannah to solo sublimely over a kicking rhythm section. Whatever the goal, this album works on a number of levels. – JH Van Morrison Alex Chilton Electricity by Candlelight Big Star star Chilton was recorded at New York City’s Knitting Factory in 1997, and now released on this posthumous collection. Eschewing his own originals, the songlist is a wide-ranging batch of colorful covers, from “Surfer Girl” to “D-I-V-O-R-C-E.” – MD Moondance Deluxe Edition Along with a remastered version of Morrison’s seminal 1970 album, this edition includes a whopping three discs of alt versions – plus a couple outtakes that would appear on subsequent albums. The sheer number of alt takes is overwhelming, but insightful to hard-core fans. – MD Billy Thompson Friend Blues-rocker Thompson has an Albert King quality that gives authority to each note he plays. “Friend” and other originals, like his sizzling paean to Jimi Hendrix, “Ain’t But One,” and the outstanding Blind Faithlike “Garden,” are right on the money – which is true of this smoking disc in general. – RA Lisa Johnson Eric Clapton Unplugged Deluxe Edition Slowhand’s famous 1992 acoustic show from MTV is back with a second disc of outtakes and alts, including more Robert Johnson tunes.
