As the weather gets colder and families spend more time inside, it's a great time to reconnect
with your child by grabbing a good book! Out of all the skills we teach at Clarendon Avenue
School, reading is one of the most critical. To be successful in nearly any job, good reading skills
are hugely important. Developing a child's reading ability can help foster strong critical thinking
skills, a longer attention span, and a broader vocabulary. And even in this increasingly digital
world, the ability to read and comprehend is a vital skill.
The graphic below shows how reading just 20 minutes a day over the course of a school year
can make a huge difference in a child's development over children who don't read. Those 20
minutes a night may seem like a lot, but it's a small investment towards your child's future. If
you don't already take time to read with your child or children each night, please consider setting
aside some time to create a new habit of reading in your household!
"Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." -- Emilie Buchwald (with thanks to Mrs.
Gebhard for the quote)

IMPORTANT WINTER INFORMATION - Winter Weather & Clothing
Children are expected to spend part of the school day on the playground for physical education and recess.
Please take into consideration the following points:
1) Wear appropriate outerwear: coat, boots, hat, mittens, warm clothing. Boots are important so the child has
dry shoes and socks during class time and we are able to maintain the school floors.
2) Mark your child's name in all clothing.
3) Check the Lost & Found for lost articles.

SANTA’S CORNER COMING TO CLARENDON
Do you need a hand-made, one–of-a-kind gift for a special person? Look no further than Santa’s Corner!
Santa’s Corner is a unique shopping experience for students, and it’s right here at Clarendon! Each year,
Clarendon’s students with special needs lovingly make items (all less than $5.00!) and all proceeds go right
back into our school and local charities. This year, we are offering scarves, ornaments, bracelets, magnets
th
th
and more! Santa’s Corner will be held December 9 – 13 . Look for specific information on which day your
child’s classroom will be allowed to purchase coming home soon. If you are interested in donating items to
help with the sale, we can always use Scotch tape, gallon Ziploc bags, stick-on gift tags, and tissue paper.
Thanks for supporting Santa’s Corner!
COUGAR CORNER - AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING CENTER
The Cougar Corner, staffed by certified teachers, is designed for those students in grades 4-6 who want help studying for a
test, completing missed work due to absence, or understanding concepts from a particular chapter or unit. See your child’s
teacher for a permission slip. It is open after school until 4:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The dates this month are
December 3, 5, 10, 12 and 17.
STUDENT FEES
Thank you to all those families who have turned in their student registration fees either at the beginning of the school year or at
Parent-Teacher Conference time. If you have been unable to pay your student fees, please call Mrs. Berg in the office at 3636286. She will work with you to make arrangements for partial payments, enabling you to pay fees as your budget allows.
Unpaid fees are carried forward throughout your child’s school years and will prevent participation in activities in Middle School
and High School.
FREE & REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM
If at any time during the school year you have a change in your household income (i.e. due to a change in job or marital status)
you may still apply for free or reduced-price school lunches. You received an application form in your packet at the beginning of
the school year, but if you need another copy, please do not hesitate to ask in the office.
GET CONNECTED @ CLARENDON AVENUE LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY CENTER
With all the technology choices out there, have you ever wondered what devices your child uses at school? Here is a list of
the devices available within the Mukwonago School District. Feel free to ask your student what he/she uses and likes! Most
can be bought online or at a local store such as Wal-Mart, Target, or Best Buy.
• Google Chromebook (about $275)
The Google Chromebook is a laptop that is powered by Google. It uses Google docs, spreadsheet, and
presentation to create documents and Google Drive to share and save. It comes with full Internet capabilities
using the Google Chrome browser as well!
• Apple Ipad or Ipad Mini (mini starting at $299, ipad starting at $399)
This apple tablet is great for going online, getting “apps” (applications that you can use or play, available both
free and paid), and portability. It uses a touch screen (including a built in touch screen keyboard) and
accessories can be added. It can take photos, videos, play music, and go online.
• Nook e-reader (starting around $125)
The Barnes & Noble NOOK is an e-reader tablet that you can purchase and read books on. Depending on the
model you buy (simple touch is just for reading all the way up to HD+) it may also have tablet features where
you can go online, buy apps, and watch movies. It is very lightweight and portable.
• Kindle (e-reader starting around $70, Fire HD starting around $139)
The Kindle e-reader is an e-reader that you can purchase and read books on. Built in Wi-Fi allows you to
download books anywhere there is Wi-Fi. The Kindle e-reader has a built in dictionary. The Kindle Fire HD is a
great tablet with built in Wi-Fi for going online, getting "apps," photos, videos, and playing music. Kindle Free
time is an easy way to set parental controls to limit playing time on "apps." Both are very lightweight and
portable. The Mukwonago School District purchases NOOKs for continuity, so your student will not have
experience using a Kindle at school.

MOVIN’ AND MUNCHIN’ SCHOOLS UPDATE
Clarendon students, families, and staff have now exercised over 5,157 miles so far this school year. Way to go!
We are currently visiting St. Louis, Missouri, home of the St. Louis Rams. In order to reach our goal of 9,744
miles by year’s end, 4,587 miles are still needed. Keep up the hard work and do not forget that exercising with
a family member always counts double the miles. Miles can also be earned by making healthy food choices. One
week without soda is worth 15 miles! Blank record forms are available on the gymnasium stage or by visiting the
Movin’ Miles link on the Clarendon Physical Education website at http://www.masd.k12.wi.us/faculty/portztr/
Extra Curricular Activities
Congratulations to the Clarendon Avenue School FIRST Lego League Teams. They attended the
Regional competition on November 17 at Mukwonago High School. They competed against other
teams of 4th-8th graders from across the southeastern part of the state and represented Clarendon well.
Team members are: Zach A., Sarah B., Seth D., Ethan H., Ethan K., Donovan M., Michael M., Austin P.,
Wyatt S., Dakota W., Will C., Allison W. and Korben R.
Thank you to the coaches, Mr. Krueger and Mr. Krinke and to the other parents who helped
out at many of the meetings.
SKI CLUB
The Clarendon Ski / Snowboard Club will be skiing again this year at Alpine Valley on Friday evenings.

12/23, Fridays 1/10, 1/17, (1/24 = early release 1:00 start), & 1/31. There is a onetime fee of $15.00, which
pays for your ski/snowboard card. This club card also allows the students to ski/snowboard Sunday
through Friday, after 3:00 p.m. for the same club rates, during non-holiday periods. The lift ticket and rental
cost will be $16.00 each. Helmet rentals are $10.00. Helmets are mandatory for students. Weekly attendance is
not required, but is encouraged for the continued success of the Club. Please contact Steve Larson or Jeanne
Olen with any additional questions at [email protected]

December PTG News
Thank you to everyone who supported our Holiday Marcus Movie Ticket & Scrip fundraiser. We were able to raise
enough money to purchase protective covers for all of our Chrome Books in the library. In September, (72) Chrome
Books and (2) storage carts were purchased as a great technology addition for our school. The new protective covers
will ensure that our students will be able to use these items for many years to come.
