The objectives of WP 1 are to
hold a single Network secretariat
responsible for :
• the overall administration of the
EuroTravNet project (including
financial oversight),
• the maintenance of a directory of
the network members and their
expertise,
• the organisation of meetings of
the Steering Committee and
annual meetings of the network
members,
• and the preparation and update
of documents/deliverables for
dissemination on the ECDC
website.
Project kick-off meeting of the EuroTravNet
Steering Committee, Marseille, January 9-10,
2009.
The first EuroTravNet Annual Meeting was
organized at ECDC in Stockholm 23-24 April
2009. About 30 Core Sites and Network
Members attended the meeting and many
projects have been discussed together and with
the ECDC staff.

ECDC
ECDC will ask EuroTravNet for advice (risk assessment) on a situation (event).
EuroTravNet may have to collaborate with the ECDC if they need to send a
response team. Each “event” must be followed by a summary of lessons
learned. EuroTravNet will make a first draft of the lessons learned for the ECDC
to review and use as they see fit.

SCIENCE WATCH
MEMBERS
&
PARTNERS
EuroTravNet does not need to complete a full review of each disease every month.
EurotTravNet should report on and give interpretation of groundbreaking
information and new developments. The ECDC would like a grassroots approach
to the research.
It is more important for EuroTravNet to provide a summary of groundbreaking
developments obtained through communication within the EuroTravNet network
rather than a systematic keyword search on Pubmed
SCIENCE WATCH : COMMENTS
From EuroTravNet coordination:
All sites are invited to propose articles –
events !
From ECDC:
it would be useful for us if you could give
some more critical comments on the public
/travel health importance of the articles
From members:
Any comments from the audience ?
Subtask 1: Updated inventory of travel
medicine resources (infrastructure and
functions) in Europe by country
Subtask 2: Updated inventory of global
travel medicine resources (infrastructures
and functions) of international
organizations and main Organizations
outside Europe such above
Subtask 3: Updated inventory of global
travel medicine products issued on a
regular basis by travel medicine
professionals to assess and manage the
risks to health associated with travel to
any country in the world
Subtask 4: Make a review of the current
guidelines used in Europe (EU Member
States, Associated, Candidate and
EEA/EFTA countries) for giving pre-travel
advice on the main preventable travelrelated communicable diseases

ECDC will prepare the first draft of the report and EuroTravNet will review it and
provide data and short paragraphs of comments and discussion.
EuroTravNet will be expected to have relevant specialists from the network review
the sections within their specialty.
EuroTravNet will be contacted in February or March to review relevant parts of the
draft. There is no authorship on the document.
The last 2010 example include the phone
conference about the outbreak of Q fever in The
Netherlands that has been organised with Pr D.
Raoult, the world expert of Q fever, through the
EuroTravNet system
EuroTravNet is asked to share information but is not required to
provide data in a routine basis.
If EuroTravNet learns about a case that is considered to be
“important or very suspicious”, it is expected to report the case to
the ECDC (even if the case is just a rumor). The rumors should be
considered credible and the ECDC only needs to be informed if
the information implicates a European response.
All such information transmitted to the ECDC will be considered
confidential information. If an event is monitored by ECDC, ECDC
can request EuroTravNet to provide a summary of the situation in
Europe: Number of cases reported in Europe through the Network
and places of possible source of infection , for instance.

The epidemic intelligence team has picked-up in the last month 2
imported cases of Trypanosomiasis (Promed report below). Would it be
possible for you to provide us with a general overview of imported cases
of Trypanosomiasis in Europe (excluding Chagas) in the recent years. For
instance we would be interested in knowing the number of cases
reported, the origin etc.
Thank you in advance for your collaboration.

EPIS will be up and running in 2010.
A travel medicine and risk assessment forum will be established on an EPIS network.
Information can be posted on this password-secured website to avoid distributing
information via email (which is not deemed reliable). Core sites will be given access to
EPIS. Any user will be able to initiate discussion. Special forums will be developed for
specific topics or diseases. Different levels of forums will be established and the ECDC
will control who has access to certain forums. EuroTravNet is not required to use EPIS
for discussion unless there is a critical event.

5 cases of
Acquired in Comoros (4), and Zanzibar in travellers returning to Marseille
and Paris (France) and Stockholm (Sweden).
All cases but one (haemorrhagic) were non-complicated dengue.
Two patients were viremic and infected by DENV-3.
Given the presence of Aedes albopictus in South Europe, early detection
of viremic travellers is critical. Returning travelers serve as sentinels for
local outbreaks of dengue fever in endemic areas

the new ECDC tender

All tasks are maintained
The Travel Medicine Inventory is now included in WP1 as an update to be provided
every year
A NEW TASK:
Question from EuroTravNet:
Which level of detail is requested for this task, taking into account
the risk for duplication with existing information for travellers?
Public Answer:
The purpose of this task is to ensure that EU travellers have easy
access to the correct and most up-to-date information on the
geographic risk for communicable diseases and on the appropriate
preventive measures to be taken.
Therefore, if such information is available in a comprehensive
manner, and of high quality, from recognised national or
international sources, it is enough to complement the ECDC
factsheets by providing the direct link to this recognised source.
However, in case such information is not available, or of
insufficient quality, it is expected to be developed by the contractor.
Core sites have been asked if they want to take the
responsability of this tasks, with the support of all members
The proposed coordinating team:
• Gerd-Dieter Burchard, Germany
• Francesco Castelli, Italy
• Frank von Sonnenburg, Germany
• Patricia Schlagenhauf, Switerland, overall Coordinator
All members will be welcome to participate
