Bowl For Kids’ Sake
Saturday in Chanute
CHANUTE — The 2011
Bowl For Kids’ Sake — the
largest fundraiser of the
year for the Big Brothers
Big Sisters organization —
will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday
at
Bowl-Mor
in
Chanute.
The event is the first since
the mentoring program has
expanded to include Neosho
County.
The expansion was made
possible last year through a
state grant to expand Big
Brothers Big Sisters, which
up to then had served only
Allen County, explained
BBBS official Terry Downing.
“We expect the agency to
continue to expand” into
Neosho County, Downing
said, while stressing that
BBBS will maintain a
strong presence in Allen
County.
Through Big Brothers
and Big Sisters, at-risk
youths ages 6-18 are partnered with adult volunteers
to partake in extracurricular activities. The “bigs”
also offer guidance for the
youngsters’ daily activities.
In the past three years, 130
children have been served
through Big Brothers Big
Sisters in Allen County. Ten
are still active. Altogether,
15 matches are ongoing in
Allen and Neosho counties.
The goal is to increase the
numbers in Neosho County,
Downing said.
Organizers estimate that
it takes about $1,000 for each
match. The goal for Saturday’s fundraiser is to raise
$30,000.
Those interested in serving on the BBBS board of
directors can contact Downing at (620) 515-0568.

Hood,” 7:30 p.m., ACCC Theatre, tickets available at the door
