The program is an initiative of the Center to
advance faculty involvement in the scholarship
of engagement. During the two-year program,
scholars learn about engaged scholarship, possiGlazier
ble funding sources, navigating disciplinary
expectations while addressing community needs,
and partnering with local communities in North Carolina and beyond.
Every other year, eight to 10 faculty members are selected to participate in
the program aimed at learning about and pursuing community engagement
through their scholarly endeavors.
Glazier, an associate professor and chair of the School’s Professional
Leadership and Practice division, conducts research focusing exploring the
impact of experiential pedagogy on teacher and student learning, particularly with regard to minority populations.
Hall, associate professor of literacy studies,
addresses issues relevant to adolescents’ literacy development and particularly those that have
been labeled as having reading difficulties. Her
work suggests that students with reading difficulties are interested in school, like to read, and
are highly motivated to improve their reading
abilities and to learn academic content.
Hall believes an important factor in helping
these students find success is to disrupt and
reconfigure the educational experiences they
receive. Her current project focuses on helping teachers engage in such
practices and will document their experiences as they do so.

Amy Lerner, a Ph.D.
student in the early
childhood, special
education and literacy program, has
published a handbook to help educators who work with
refugees from
Burma.
The handbook –
Educating the Refugee Child: A Resource
Guide for Teachers – was part of Lerner’s
community engagement fellowship from the
Carolina Center for Public Service.
During the summer Lerner developed and published the guide, which was written for elementary school personnel who work with
refugee students from Burma. Printed copies
of the guide were distributed to several
schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools district last month in time for the start
of classes. The Chapel Hill area has a significant population of Burmese refugees, with
approximately 200 refugee students in the
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools system.
The Center for Public service also has made
the handbook available on its website.
Before coming to UNC, Lerner earned her master’s degree in developmental psychology from
Teachers College, Columbia University, and
spent two-years conducting research at the
New York University Child Study Center.
Since coming to Carolina, she has been the
recipient of a Research Triangle Schools
Partnership doctoral student seed grant, a
Community Engagement Fellowship from the
Carolina Center for Public Service, and a Ruth
Landes Memorial Research Fund grant from
The Reed Foundation. As part of these projects, Lerner is conducting research aimed at
understanding the challenges and opportunities for successfully integrating refugee children into school communities, and increasing
their academic potential.
Lerner is spending the Fall 2012 semester in
the District of Columbia, conducting research
for her Reed Foundation grant project.

Donor Profile: Musette Morgan
After serving for ten years as a member of the Tennessee State Board of Education, Musette Morgan (A.B.Ed. ’76) came to appreciate the importance of
researchers who devote themselves to evaluating educational policies.
She found the information and advice the board received from educational policy researchers to be essential.
“We were making huge education policy reforms and their research and their expertise made a tremendous difference,” Morgan said.
The experience helped motivate her in making a gift that enabled the School of Education to secure a new professorship to support such work.
The Morgan Distinguished Professorship in Educational Innovations was made possible by a gift of $350,000 from Morgan and her husband, Allen Morgan.
Additional support from an anonymous donor, combined with $250,000 from the C.D. Spangler Foundation allowed the University to secure $333,000 in
matching state funds for the $1 million endowment to fund the professorship.
The School will soon be recruiting for a faculty member to fill the position.
Morgan said policymakers need the help that informed educational policy researchers can provide.
“I saw a disconnect in effective research that would lead to good policy making,” she said. “We need to replicate good programs and not throw money after bad ones. It’s just a critical need.”
Bill McDiarmid, dean of the School of Education, said Morgan’s gift would provide the School additional strength in an important area.
“We intend to grow our ability to help inform policymakers as they make decisions regarding our schools,” he said. “There’s a growing interest among the public and their representatives that we do a better job educating all of our children. Having new ability to help foster educational innovation will contribute to those discussions.”
Morgan called choosing to support the professorship in educational innovations an easy decision.
“I just saw the need,” she said. “I’ve been talking a long time about the need for more strength in this area.
“This is very exciting to me.”
