Come and experience Mexican wrestling extravaganza mixed with circus, magic and clown! In the arena of Hopla Circus contemporary gladiators battle in an improvised ballet of acrobatic moves and spectacular strikes . Circus transforms the rules of “Lucha Libre”, sliding them to a delirious universe , deviating to poetry and genius insanity . 3 Aurelia Brailowsky, part French, part Mexican, and Belgian by adoption, inherited the passion for «Lucha Libre», mexican wrestling, from her natal country. To share her passion, she reunited a compound of circus artists from Spain, Chile, Belgium and France, some of which remain of Hopla Circus’s «La Familia Rodriguez». For «Face to Fake», all the artists have put on their wrestling masks. In the arena, contemporary gladiators battle in an improvised ballet of acrobatic moves and spectacular strikes. Everything is about convincing the audience of the authenticity of this wrestling «masquerade». On the ring, the domination of the winner on the loser is legitimate. The one that respects the rules of creativity and nobility turns out to be the all mighty hero that resembles us all, the other, the «Darth Vader» of the ring, the cheat, the bad, is the spillway of all our hate. Thanks to him, we shout the wrestler down, we get angry, we let out our outrage. The «false» product of the «truth»: our emotion, the true art we adore. Finally, stands the «mask»; the fighter wears his mask like the knight would defend his castle. The one wearing a mask wears an identity, he becomes a «half god». In a fight, to lose the mask is to become human again, he loses his powers and his divinity. But where stands circus in all this? Circus and «Lucha Libre» share the same spectacular excessiveness. Both are acrobatic and original. When a circus artist wears a «Lucha Libre» mask, the «true» and the «false» twist and turn in an even more complex way. Circus transforms the rules of «Lucha Libre», sliding them to a delirious universe, it’s incursion on the ring imposes a deviation to poetry and genius delirium. With «Face to Fake», the artist Aurelia Brailowsky becomes a wrestler, gets to wear a mask, and wins an access to the world of «Lucha Libre», «true» or «false», it’s about her becoming a «super hero». Jean-Yves Penafiel 4 Characters EL BIS PEREZ PEREZ Master of ceremonies of the HCF (Hopla Circus Federation), a true Lucha Libre lover, he hosts and gives the rules, all with affection and, sometimes, clumsiness. EL MATADOR THE MATADOR stands elegant and flamboyant fighting against his opponent such a “toreador” would fight a “toro”. Nemesis of LEON SANCHEZ and lover of the TSUNAMI, he represents justice. MASCARA DEL PODER Magician and wrestler, MASCARA DEL PODER tries desperately to fit in the ring. Do not underestimate him, his sneaky tricks could surprise you! 6 LA TSUNAMI High priestess and spell caster, THE TSUNAMI overflies the ring and all their wrestlers. She spreads her thoughts using her voice and her baritone saxophone. LEON SANCHEZ Sneaky like a feline, LEON SANCHEZ has his own rules, he obeys to no one. Knife thrower, giant hula hoop master, he inflicts damage on the ring... but have no fear! ‘Cause MATADOR is near! LA FANATICA A coated woman roams among the audience. Shameless, she approaches the wrestlers to boo them or even kiss them. Is she senile or just lost? One thing is certain, THE FANATICA tries desperately to join the ring of “Hopla Circus”. EL JEFE EL JEFE, “The Lord of the Ring”, has risen from the ultra tomb to have his revenge on all the HCF (Hopla Circus Federation) wrestlers, but a dog that barks doesn’t bite! EL JEFE is the perfect “brute wanna be”. 7 Performance techniques FLOOR ACROBATICS Ejecting themselves off the ropes, bouncing on the surface of the ring, the “wrestlers” of Hopla Circus twist and turn the audience’s heads! TRAMPOLINE Matador’s secret weapon! The trampoline, permits to get oneself higher and higher. Positioned behind the ring, it allows spectacular entries, exits and stunts. 8 HAND TO HAND / BANQUINE The perfect mix between “Lucha Libre” and “Circus”. The members of Hopla Circus manipulate their skills to offer to the audience new and original stunts combining wrestling techniques with banquine and hand to hand! KOREAN TEETER BOARD Tsunami and Matador quarrel for love using the teeter board as a couple therapy. They jump, twist and turn and take greater risks! LUCHA LIBRE (OR MEXICAN WRESTLING) Second national sport in Mexico after soccer. Wishing to share with their audience other cultures, Hopla Circus has chosen to reconvert to Mexican Wrestling with this objective: impress and arise people’s consciousness. The Wrestling-Circus is born! MAGIC Between hits, fights and stunts, our “acrobat-wrestlers” propose “Magic and mystery” hosted by the evil (but clumsy) Mascara Del Poder... Illusions and esoteric mysticism guaranteed!!! But wait! There is more! Knife throwing, giant hula hoop, slapstick and loads of features will entertain and surprise!!!! 9 Unlike American wrestling Mexican “Lucha Libre” is not a violent sport… it is a real show performed by acrobatic actors, rather than by wild beasts… For this reason, all the faint of heart must attend this great show!!!! 10 THE ARTISTIC TEAM Comprising pla six former students of the as part of their finals , the ces which earned them the board ) and du of Brussels (ESAC), Ho- Circus Company practices the art of teeter board and banquine since September 2001. Today, the Company welcomes artists from various nationalities, personalities and varied specialties to launch its new project, “Face to Fake”, mixing Circus, Catch and Clown. With Gonzalo Alarcón (CHI), Aurélia Brailowsky (FR-MEX), Miguel Ángel Córdoba (SP), Benjamin Eugène (BE), Alba Sarraute (SP) and Martí Soler (SP). 11 BRAILOWSKY, Aurélia (France, Mexico) A flyer specialized in the circus technics of Banquine and Teeter Board. Having begun at an early age, Aurélia has practiced nine years of gymnastics throughout her years between France, Mexico and the United States. She discovers Circus in 1998 at the “Ecole National de Cirque d’Annie Fratellini” (France) and continues her training at the “Ecole National de Cirque de Châtellerault” (France) to finally receive a degree in 2004 at the “Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque de Bruxelles”, (ESAC, Belgium). She discovers Clown thanks to Christine ROSSIGNOL and Michel DALLAIRE and decides to explore different acting technics permitting her to maintain her acrobatic vocabulary. In 2004, she co-founds the company Hopla Circus and creates the show “La Familia Rodriguez” (2005). This show tours during five years and receives many prizes (among others, Special prize of the Jury and the SACD Award at the “Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain” in 2004). In 2006, she performs in “Dans Quel Sens” with the company “Affabulation” and in 2009 she co-founds the company Sweatshop with the show “Sibling”. SOLER I GIMBERNAT, Martí (Spain) Musician and acrobat. After his training at the “Rogelio Circus School” in Barcelona, Martí chooses to specialize as a base for hand to hand circus technic at the “Ecole Nationale de Cirque d’Annie Fratellini” (FR). At the same time, he perfects his skills with the Cyr Wheel. In those same years, he works for several theater and circus companies such as Fattore K, Yorick, Cie Transe Express and Cirque Cric. In 2007, he co-founds the company Daromaï with the show “1, 2, 3 pomme”, his first creation as an author and performer. 12 ALARCÓN, Gonzalo (Chile) Born in Chile, Gonzalo lives and works in Europe since 2000. He has studied Clown, Commedia dell’Arte and physical theater with Carlo BOSO, Michele MONETTA, Michel DALLAIRE, Emmanuel SEMBELY and Bernardo REY. He finally continues his training in Clown at the “Centre National des Arts du Cirque (CNAC, France) in 2009–2010 with Paul André SAGEL. After his experiences with the Circus Arts and Commedia dell’Arte, he specializes in the Art of Mask and Clown; he perceives the work of Clown as a meeting point between different forms of expression. He participates in the creation of the company Il Circomanó (Rome 2004), he plays in “Twelfth Night” of W. Shakespeare directed by Carlo Boso (2007) and writes and plays for “The Dream of Arlequin – Monologue for two Arlequins” (2010). CÓRDOBA PELEGRIN, Miguel Ángel (Spain) Miguel Ángel practices magic since his tender age. He now mixes his skills of magician with acrobatic movements, clown and physical theater. In 2000 he enters the Carampa circus school (Madrid, Spain) and in 2004, he obtains a diploma at the ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque de Bruxelles, Belgium) where he specializes in Banquine and Teeter Board. He creates his first show of magic when he is only fourteen years old. In 2004, he co-founds the company Hopla Circus and tours five years with the show “La Familia Rodriguez” (2005). In 2008, he founds together with his brother Luis Javier the company Doblemandoble and creates the act “Les Anneaux Indomptés”. Since 2009, they perform with a full length show suited for theaters called “Mi Otro Yo” and a twenty minute act for street festivals untitled “La Belle Escabelle”. 13 SARRAUTE, Alba (Spain) Alba is a dynamic and versatile artist. Between 1997 and 2002, she specializes in singing, theater and circus (Teeter Board, trampoline and acrobatics) at the “Aula School of Theater” in Mataró (Spain), at the “Rogelio Rivel Circus School” in Barcelona (Spain) and finally at the “Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque d’Annie Fratellini” (France). During her training in France, she performs for the company Fattore K directed by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti and then, in 2003 and 2004, participates in the creation of “Paradiso” and “Argonauti”. Very young, she creates her own street performance company called Terraq’ua offering several shows like “Seriosamente Tragicomedia” and “Mirando a Yukali”. She collaborates with Clown Sans Frontières in a Haïti expedition in 2007. Soon after, she’s invited to the Rio de Janeiro festival “Esse Monte de Mulher Palhaça”, the international feminine humor festival. Among other creations, Alba creates in 2010 her solo “Soy la otra (La Diva)” and still tours with this show to the present. EugÈne, Benjamin (Belgium) Benjamin is a high level gymnast, in 2008 he wins a gold medal in the Belgian Trampoline Championships. After obtaining a degree at the ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque de Bruxelles), in 2005 he co-founds the company Le Botrio and creates the shows “One, Two, Trio” (2005) and “Rhythm & Beasts” (2007). At the same time, he joins the company Cirq’ulation Locale with the show “Trampoline Mission 3” (2006) and participates in “Sibling” created by Sweatshop. In 2011 he performs in “Be Good to the Always” from the Human Works ensemble. 14 With the help of: Jean-Yves Pénafiel Director, singer and pedagogue After his career as an actor and theater director, today JeanYves Penafiel divides his artistic activity between directing circus performances, theater pedagogy and singing. From 2003 to 2008, he was the director of the scenic training program at the Academy Fratellini (National Circus School of Paris) where he directed several performances and shows. In 2007, he begun his work with «Circolombia», a collaboration over several performances including «Banquina» that was awarded at the World Circus Festival of Tomorrow and «Urban», which was created in 2010 at Circo Price in Madrid and Round house in London. Since 2010 he has been invited as a director to work with several circus companies such as Mesdemoiselles, Daraomaï and Hopla Circus. 15 JUVENTUD GUERRERA (Mexico) Juventud is a professional mexican wrestler, son of the legendary F uerza GUERRERA. H e ’ s part of the main american wrestling federations such as the WWE (W orld W restling E nter tainment ) and is part of most major mexican leagues like the CMLL and the AAA.
