The Most Holy Trinity May 30, 2010
The love of God has been poured out
into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
— Romans 5:5b
PRAISE TO THE CREATOR
The first reading, from Proverbs, is a
beautiful doxology of the glory of Christ, who
existed before all of creation. Christ is the
Wisdom of God spoken of in the verse: “from of
old I was poured forth, / at the first, before the
earth” (Proverbs 8:23). Christ is described in terms of
preexistence, of knowledge and wisdom of God, as the
Child of God in whom the Creator delights, playing on the
earth and delighting in the human race. Psalm 8 continues
this hymn of praise to the Creator, enumerating all the
wonders of creation, and marveling at the wonderful truth
that God has put humanity at the forefront of it all, making
us a little less than angels, “crowned with glory and

honor” (Psalm 8:6).

For Father’s Day, June 20, 2010 we have cards available
that you can present on Father’s Day. You may come to
the rectory to fill out the envelopes and we will place them
on the altar for you to remain there until the end of June.
The suggested offering is $5.00 for a deceased loved one
and $10.00 for the living. For the living you will receive a
special card and envelope to present to your loved one on
Father’s Day. The proceeds go to the maintenance of the
church. God bless you for your generosity.
TRANSFORMING GRIEF is a day of spiritual retreat for
those who are grieving the death of a loved one. It is being
offered by Barbara Elordi, Ministry of Consolation
Coordinator for the Archdiocese on Saturday, June 12th, at
St. Gabriel’s in San Francisco from 9:30 — 2:30.
Please call Barbara to register at 415-614-5506.

SAINT CHARLES LWANGA AND HIS COMPANIONS
(martyred 1886-87) June 3
“Master of Pages,” reputedly the handsomest man in all
Uganda, Charles Lwanga, lay catechist, courageously led
about forty teenaged boys, Catholics and Anglicans, on a fortymile forced march to martyrdom for their common Christian
faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different
churches, they strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead.
King Mwanga, himself barely twenty, had ordered them
executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages
were the king’s male harem, who, now Christians, refused
what pious accounts demurely describe as his “unreasonable
demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned alive;
the youngest, thirteen-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had
often shielded from the King’s lust; the most tragic, Saint
Mbaga, whose father was his executioner! In 1964, Paul VI
canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican
companions, recalling the heroism of early Christianity’s
African martyrs, which we modern Christians of far less faith
never expected to see repeated. Forty years after the pope’s
words, what does our faith cost us? Heroism aside, how
generous is our response?

American Cancer Society
Relay For Life of Daly City
July 31 — Aug. 1, 2010
Relay For Life...is a unique, challenging and fun way to
raise money for the American Cancer Society. This year’s
annual Relay For Life of Daly City will be held at Westmoor High School. The Relay involves forming a team to
walk in honor of those who have been affected by cancer.
The goal is to keep one of your team members walking on
the track during the entire 24 hours - because cancer
doesn’t sleep.
Relay begins by honoring survivors in the opening ceremony. There will be entertainment, food, a Kids’ Corner
plus lots of fun and inspiration for all.
Form a team, proudly walk our Lap of Hope (as a cancer
survivor), volunteer your time, dedicate a luminaria or be a
sponsor!

DID YOU KNOW?
Before any employee or volunteer may have contact with
the children and youth in our parishes and schools, the
Archdiocese of San Francisco requires that they must fulfill
2 requirements: They must undergo one of two types of
background evaluation, either fingerprint-based via Live
Scan or a demographic data-based background check,
depending on the position they will have. They must also
complete special online course in child abuse awareness,
“Recognize, Report & Prevent Child Abuse.”

Child & Youth Protection: 415-614-5576 or

MYSTERY
A teacher was talking with his students about mystery. “Think of a rose,” he said. Everyone in the room could
imagine a rose. “Imagine its fragrance.” All heads nodded.
“Describe it.” No one could. Our modern minds want “just
the facts,” but mystery is truth that cannot be pinned down.
Today is the feast of the Holy Trinity: one God in three persons. In the history of the Church, many scholars have described the Trinity, but none can provide a final definition
because the Trinity is beyond words. The scriptures show
the actions of God as Father, Son, and Spirit and contain
references to their relationship. Jesus tells his disciples
there is one savior and one salvation, given to us in Jesus
Christ himself, which is open to us through the Holy Spirit.
Saint Paul says we are the Body of Christ and in relationship with God, equally called, chosen, and loved. Yet God
gives us different gifts, abilities, and callings and asks only
for our love in return and that we use what God has given
us. It’s that simple. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
